Absolutely love Jill Mansell’s books and for me this is one of her best. A great romp through different relationships with lots of humour along the way. It all starts with a ‘near’ wedding. From there the fun begins. A real page turner and I would thoroughly recommend this book to totally immerse yourself into.
The book follows the stories of Ruby, Freya, Iris, Max and Lottie who are all residents of Lanrock and have a connection to a wedding that happens at the start. Ruby has just discovered that her husband has cheated on her after her cleaner, Iris, hears him and his mistress and decides to gather evidence to prove he’s a cheat. She then disrupts Freya’s wedding to confront him. Lottie and Max have known each other since primary school, losing touch over the years due to a major event (I won’t spoiler it!) but are both guests at the wedding. It’s a lovely plot of love, relationships that end and start in lots of different ways and how what can be a terrible event can change everyone’s lives. It starts and ends with a wedding and there’s plenty of happily ever afters without ever feeling like you’re not getting to know the big cast. I think it helps that they’re all interlinked, and so the plots are too!
Highly recommend this as a positive and uplifting story and I’ll be reading more of Jill Mansell’s books after this too. Thanks to NetGalley and Orion for a free ARC in return for an honest review.
You could never go wrong with Jill Mansell. This novel finds different couples dealing with different issues all revolving around a wedding!
All the usual key ingredients were there: great relatable characters (both good and bad), humour, unexpected twist, romance, amazing locations, so a thoroughly enjoyable read.
I liked the fact that the book didn’t just focus on one story and it focused on a few different relationships. In some books this can be confusing but their stories flowed so well and everyone was linked together.
‘Wedding of the Year” by Jill Mansell is published on 18.01.24, you can pre-order your copy now!
I read every book that Jill Mansell produces but I think this is my most favourite of her recent ones - the scene is immediately set - the wedding is about to take place but the chauffeur is asked to take the bride round the church one more time and that's when the chaos starts! Our heroines are Ruby. the vicar's wife and Lottie, a guest at the aforementioned wedding. This is a highly entertaining tale of lost loves and how life can change ina blink of a eye. Would highly recommend as a great read.
I'm a big Jill Mansell fan and this is one of her best books so far.
The story starts with a dramatic nearly-wedding. This leads into the stories of Ruby, Lottie and Freya, three likeable characters, each with an interesting storyline.
I couldn't put it down!
A perfect read, I read this in one day as I couldn't wait to find out what happened to everyone! It starts with a wedding, and ends with a wedding - but who actually gets married?!
There are a variety of characters, with Freya, Lottie and Ruby as the main ones in linked storylines, with Iris's story running throughout everyone's lives. I especially loved Ruby's story with her cheating husband of how she overcame adversity and came out the other side so much happier, but I equally loved Lottie and Max's storyline, almost teenage loves who didn't quite get a chance to see where their relationship would lead because of an incident with both their families, who still (initially) cause them a lot of grief this time around. Iris was very outspoken and funny, and I'm really glad she had her HEA. And Freya (the first wedding) managed to sort out her life too after a bit of subterfuge, and was very grateful for Iris and Ruby's unexpected intervention!
It sounds like a lot of characters to keep track of, but it was actually very easy. I do love a Jill Mansell book, they're always very enjoyable, but this one was a step above, a real page turner, with a great storyline and a lovely ending. A perfect way to round off 2023 for me!
I've always been a massive fan of Jill Mansell, in fact I think I've read every one of her books so far. When I heard she had written another story, I Was very excited and knew I had to read it immediately!
We join the story at a church on a beautiful day, the sun is shining and the bride is radiant as her cars pulls up at the church, only for her to hear that age old cliché “drive around the block.” Initially we're unsure as to what is happening as we know the groom is at the altar waiting with anticipation to marry the love of his life. So it's a shock when we hear that it’s the vicar who is conducting the service who is the one that has fled!
Lottie and Max are two of the guests in attendance at the wedding that never was, but they haven't seen each other for many years. Over the course of the story we learn all about their history together, but as well as that we hear the stories of other people connected to the wedding, either guests, or those who turned up at the church and changed the events of the day.
This truly is another remarkable book by one of my firm favourite authors. I couldn't put it down and by the end of it I really did think that I lived with these people in that wonderful coastal town. I was devastated when the book ended as I was so invested in all their stories and they felt like firm friends at the end.
I've just found my new favourite author!
From start to finish, this was well-written, had a good plot and great characters. It went at a good pace and was set in beautiful Cornwall.
I highly recommend it!
The Wedding of the Year introduces us to three women - Lottie, Freya and Ruby - all with very different lives and live stories. Can they all get the happy endings they want and deserve?
Lottery has a messy family life, and she meets up with former best friend Max out of the blue. Can they recover from events of the past?
Freya is about to marry local GP Cameron. She owes him a lot - but doesn't love him. Can she help him see she isn't the girl for him?
When a huge secret is revealed about Ruby's husband, she makes a huge impromptu decision. Will life ever be the same again?
Lovely characters, an easy read, but it all just felt a bit too neatly wrapped up for me. 3 and a half rounded to 4 stars.
What a lovely read! A fun rom com that starts and ends with a wedding and covers not one but four relationships involving friends in the fictional Cornish village of Lanrock. Lottie, Ruby, Iris and Freya were all likeable characters that I was rooting for from the start. With lots of “will they/won’t they” moments and some twists and turns, I stayed up late to see how it all worked out. This is my first Jill Mansell book, and it’s encouraged me to read more of her work. Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
How can you not love a Jill Mansell book?! A really lovely story with some really fun characters. Loved the little cameos of previous characters too, great to read the restaurant is still going!
You know you’re in for a treat when you pick up a Jill Mansell book and that’s exactly what this was. Loved it xx
An entertaining novel with delightful characters, set in the charming Cornish village of Lanrock.
Plenty of romance and drama which kept me reading to the end to discover 'will she, won't she.'
As with all Jill's books, you are left with a feeling of joy.
An uplifting read.
Finally, FINALLY, after more than a few miserable reads lately, I've found a book that I didn't want to put down! Just trust Jill Mansell, she'll bring back your reading mojo, together with her larger than life characters and brilliant, witty writing.
This time there were more characters than usually and it took me some time to see who is who and what's up with them, however, as they were all so colourful and lively it didn't bother me at all, I simply wanted to know what's going to happen with them. I was invested in their stories and although you could probably write three books with that many characters, it simply sat in this story. The setting was - again - beautiful and the descriptions just right on spot, not too many, not too less, the dialogues quirky, sharp and quick, with tons of situational humour - just my cup of tea!
This story is a real triumph, really, uplifting, optimistic and brought smile to my face more than once. Jill Mansell keeps her standards and there wasn't a book by her that I didn't love - and I've read all of them!
A great fun story from Jill Mansell, The story starts with one wedding and ends with another. A last minute interruption to the wedding of Cameron and Freya spells the end of one marriage and the postponement of another. Ruby is popular children’s novelist and illustrator married to the local vicar Peter. She finds out just before the start of Freya and Cameron’s wedding that Peter has been having an affair. The ensuing drama leads to the wedding not happening. Freya is actually relieved and is looking for an excuse not to actually get married to the local GP Cameron. Publicility hungry for his good works and charity fundraising and the donor of the kidney who saved Freya’s Mum. And then we have Max and Lottie who were childhood friends until a family drama split them up at the age of 17, the night they had their first kiss. They reconnect of the wedding that wasn’t. Follow the ups and downs and find out if the path of true love eventually runs smooth. I am enjoyed the story and and grateful to NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC. Jill’s book are always a treat in January when the nights are dark and you need a mid winter pick me up.
It’s been a while since I read a Jill Mansell book but this didn’t disappoint, I enjoyed the way the characters interweave and there is no filling it’s all story and leaves you wanting more
Thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for an advance copy of this book in exchange for a review.
Really enjoyed this - great characters and lots going on.
What a lovely delightful heartwarming read . We start the novel with a wedding where we meet the lovely characters in this novel. We follow them through their relationships and see new couples blossoming. I loved the characters they felt so real. It is funny in places and I couldn’t help smiling whilst reading. We follow Max and Lottie and their rekindled romance. We laugh at the vicar who is not as Christian as he appears . I loved Ruby the vicars wife. The setting is beautiful , so picturesque. I have read Jill Mansell’s novels before and enjoyed them. This is a nice easy read where you can immerse yourself into the story and still think of the characters after turning the last page.
Oh there is so much going on in this book that my head is spinning - but in a nice way! With great characters, all with their own back stories going on, romances re kindling or breaking down, a thwarted marriage ceremony, affairs and numerous twists and turns it's riveting stuff. I loved the characters, (apart from the vicar and Cameron), and thoroughly enjoyed the humour, warmth and of course the beautiful setting. A warm, cosy read that will delight all fans of Jill Mansell. My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC which I gladly and voluntarily review.
Absolutely brilliant new book from the truly wonderful Jill Mansell! After reading most of Jill’s books over many years, this is one of her very best! Full of love and hope, scandal and the kind of situations you can’t see a way out of!!
There is a wedding in Lanrock full of the local community but before the bride arrives, a scandalous drama unfolds which changes the day for Freya and Cameron’s day. Lottie has just taken a pew and sees one of the ushers is Max her childhood ally who she hasn’t seen for years!!
The writing is sublime, the story kept me gripped from the first page to the last, the characters and story well thought out with hope and humanity all the way through!!
Now one of my top books I’ve had the joy of reading this year!! Jill is a true master of her craft. This is a warm hearted total comfort reading.
Hugely enjoyed recommended and will getting some copies for friends! Loved it!
Thank you to NetGalley and Headline for the early read!!
I have read many of Jill Mansell’s books but I have to say I think this may be one of my favourites.
The storylines between various likeable characters interwoved well and I found myself rooting for everyone.
The setting of the book was descriptive and inviting and I devoured this book in just a couple of days.
A thoroughly enjoyable read. Thank you for allowing me to read it.
