What a wonderful book I have read!
I love regency romantic stories. Always I do. It has been a long time since I read one. I'm happy that I get the chance to read this cute love story. Thank you for the ARC.
I was having a terrible reading slump. Too much to read and also too picky. Terrible feeling.
Anyways. I love the characters. Emily and Callum are such babies. I love them. They're well done. I love the pace of the story. I enjoy every scene between the fmc and mc. It was so easy to follow and enjoy every moment.
I need to read the others books because they intrigued me to do it, haha.
If you want a lovely regency love story, this is perfect for you.
Best of the trilogy...
Callum, the Duke of Stratton is always flustered and clumsy when in the presence of Lady Emily. She in turn wants nothing to do with Callum, who destroys her dresses, pushes her in a fountain and sets her dress on fire (I don't blame her). For six years, they stay away from each other as best they can until Callum's ward, Peter takes a shine to her dog.
They become friends and when Emily's grandmother is on her deathbed, they go from fake to a real engagement. Although way too much time was spent with Emily getting her review replaced, it really shouldn't have been Emily's fault, though she took on way too much of the blame, it was Callum who wrote the callous words that caused that letter to be written.
This was the best of the trilogy with Callum being the more decent sort than Brody or even Anthony.
Recommend.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and would wholeheartedly recommend each of these books as a stand-alone or better still read them all. The banter and actions from both Emily and Callum are sweet and believable as they overcome their nerves around each other and get to know each other whilst allowing Peter, Callum’s ward to overcome his grief by playing with Emily’s dog Heidi. Very well developed story and I look forward to reading more from this author.
I have read all the books in the Gentlemen's Authors series, and A Duke's Lesson in Charm by Sophie Barnes is the third one. The story revolves around Callum Davis, Duke of Stratton, and Lady Emily Brooke, the daughter of the Earl of Rosemount. Before the book starts, they already have a history of accidents and mishaps that have made them enemies. However, the book culminates in a lovely end to the series, and it can also be read as a great standalone book if you haven't read the others yet. I strongly recommend reading all the books in the series as it will enhance the experience of each book.
The story is engaging with some laugh-out-loud moments, and the characters are relatable and have enough depth. The epilogue at the end perfectly rounds off the series as we get to know about all three Dukes and how their future has unfolded. I found this book to be unputdownable, just like the other two books in the series. The author has done a wonderful job, and I enjoyed every word of it.
This was a delightful story of enemies to lovers, and Ms. Barnes weaves a wonderful story of mishaps and accidents. Callum, the Duke of Stratton, has always been regarded as honorable and unflappable, that is, until he's in the company of Lady Emily Brooke. Then, he becomes a babbling and clumsy idiot. He's either stepped on her toes, spilled wine on her, or, worst of all, ripped her dress, all because he becomes so flustered around her. So, he did the only thing he could and has avoided her for six years.
The one person Lady Emily wished to avoid was the Duke of Stratton because every time they'd been in the same room together in the past, something horrible always happened, but when she ran into him while walking her dog, she was surprised to see a young boy with him. Come to find out Peter was now his ward after losing his parents, and her little dog has done the one thing that Callum hasn't been able to do--put a smile on Peter's face. Thus began a tentative truce in their relationship.
I really loved how the powerful Duke of Stratton could be reduced to a nervous wreck, and it was fun to watch him change and grow in Emily's company. He was taken by surprise that the more time he spent with Emily, the more he wanted. When she began to show interest in him, he wanted to be more than her friend. When she suggests a fake courtship, he agrees, and that's when things spiral out of control. The whole plot around the three dukes writing a book was quite inventive, but it also led to a series of misunderstandings that threatened to cost Stratton Emily's affection before they finally got their happily ever after.
Another charming historical novel from Sophie. I love how she writes historical novels but makes them feel modern at the same time. The female characters follow the demands of society but have strength and determination.
Callum and Emily's story seems to be the easiest of the three love stories in this series. I enjoyed it very much. Maybe because of the dogs that Emily trained. I'm a sucker for dogs. A little tension in the end to give the story the "oh no, are they going to make it" vibe. What's a great romance without one of those.
Historical romance never gets old... haha. Some tv series based on this kind of books might have skyrocketed the genre this last couple of years but for me this is the first I read in a while.
Third part of a series, A Duke's Lesson in Charm can be read as a stand alone without problem, is my case, worked perfect for me.
Halfway through the read I kind of felt that it was getting really long but now that I'm finished and reviewing all that happened I'm certain it was just me forgetting that there are books and stories that can have more than one problem to solve and this one got a few, The last two were one after the other giving a little more drama to the recipe.
It gives warm fuzzy feelings and some sort of action balancing it. All in all, I really enjoyed it, very easy to read and entertaining. I haven´t read the first two books but is what I'm going for next, the way is written somethimes made me forget I was readding historical romance but is okay, I'm just really used to the last series I read.
I recomend it, and since this resonated too much with me, Emily to be exact, I'd like to be bold and say, this is my favorite piece from the series.
Callum and Emily have known and avoided each other for years because they keep having physical mishaps and calamities with each other (trodden toes, ruined gowns, falling in water, and even a dress burn). It’s fairly obvious to the reader that Callum is clumsy because he’s nervous around Emily, though she has not seen it that way. One day at the park, Callum’s orphaned ward seems to perk up when coming across Emily’s dog, and Callum arranges for the boy to spend more time with the dog. Callum and Emily talk out their clumsiness and misunderstandings and slowly develop a friendship with each other. It’s nice seeing them interact and form a bit of a family unit around Callum’s ward, and when Emily’s grandmother is ill, she lies about a courtship with Callum to make her happy. We also get to catch up with the couples from the previous two books of the series and see the progress of the romance novel that the three gentlemen friends have written.
Love by mishap!
What’s better than one author who is likened to Jane Austen? Why three gentlemen writers who join together to write a romance novel—three Dukes to be exact! Add to this a literary reviewer who’s anonymous, who’s followed closely by the ton, and goes by the name of the ‘Lady Librarian’ and you have a book with a most interesting, intriguing even, slant.
Pieces of the story pulled at my heartstrings. I liked the characters of Callum Davis, Duke of Stratton and Lady Emily, the Earl of Rosemount’s daughter. I liked the inclusion of Stratton’s ward Peter and Emily’s dog Heidi as a hook for getting the unlucky couple together.
Romance by chance or mishap? The fact that Stratton couldn’t put a foot right with Lady Emily was too too delicious and absurd. The resulting romance was somewhat rushed. Mind you Stratton was pretty desperate by this stage.
A charming read! (As this is the third in the series I felt I’d unfortunately missed some of the backstory.)

Many thanks to the author.

"Callum Davis, Duke of Stratton, never expected to get along with Emily Brooke, but thanks to his ward, he starts to realize she’s pretty good company. The more time he spends with her, the better he likes her. But rather than let their relationship grow at a gradual pace, a pretend courtship leads to a whirlwind romance that quickly collapses when Emily finds out what Callum has written about her. Now he must make every effort to prove his love for her is real, or risk losing her forever."
They pretend to be engaged to satisfy her grandmother. It doesn't turn out the way they want.
I received this book from the publisher and NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion of this book.
I loved this entire series. A group of 3 Dukes, all having financial problems, come together to write a romance book in order to raise funds to get out of debt. Books 1&2;in this series are about the other 2 Dukes, Anthony and Brody. This book is about the 3rd Duke, Collum.
He and Emily have a history together. They rub each other the wrong way and do all they can to avoid each other. But due to a change in circumstances, Callum and Emily end up spending some quality time together. They become Frenemies, then friends, then more.
But of course with their past, you know things are not going to run smoothly.
I loved the book and the series but I would definitely recommend reading all 3 together.
5⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I want to thank Netgalley for the opportunity to review this book.
I had read the preceding book in this series and fell in love with Sophie Barnes! Callum and Emily’s story was just pure. I loved how clumsy Callum was and the more he got to know Emily, he felt more at ease. I would definitely recommend this book and the series. Seeing the dukes make a success of their writing endeavours was heartwarming.
Callum is one of the Duke authors of a romance novel in order to salvage their finances and restore their pride.
Emily is the Lady Librarian, a reviewer of new books for a newspaper. The two of them have had difficult altercations in the past and neither is comfortable in the others company.
Callum has a young ward and Emily has a dog so they initially meet so his ward can play with the dog and not feel so sad about losing his parents. But they come to enjoy each other with every new walk or time in the park.
It becomes difficult to maintain the secret of being an author in their developing relationship and the secret becomes a burden that will tear them apart.
This is the third story of the author Dukes and how they find happiness despite their circumstances and the ton.
A series worth delving into.
Having read the first book in the series, I came into this book with high expectations, and I wasn’t disappointed. The romance is sweet and not without stumbling blocks, and the characters are all very likeable. There is no heat to the story apart from 1 chapter near the end, however it is contained within a paragraph or 2, so could be easily skipped for the more modest reader. Although part of a series, I read this story missed book 2 in the series, and did not feel it hindered me, so it can be read as a standalone. I very much enjoyed this story, and would wholeheartedly recommend

This was my favorite in the trilogy. I really loved Callum & Emily. Some of the scenes that were talked about early, the mishaps between them, I wish it had been a longer book to actually experience those moments. They would have been fun to actually read. This was a good conclusion & I liked the epilogue that explained where/how everyone was.
Loved reading the amazing and engaging romance story. Callum Davis, Duke of Stratton, and Lady Emily Brooke try to avoid each other, but when Callum's ward, Peter, wants to play with Emily's dog, they all have to spend time together. Read the highly recommended, wonderfully written, and a must read riveting love story. Can't wait to read the next story by the fabulous author, Sophie Barnes!
As much as I liked books 1 and 2 I think this is my favorite in the series. I loved that Callum and Emily had a history filled with missteps and mishaps. In the end a big part of the relationship between them was about how they had each misunderstood the other during each of those earlier events. Once they actually stopped to talk through what had happened they were able to see that they had each made mistakes and then move on from them. If they had been able to have a conversation about their true feelings during their fake betrothal they could have also prevented some more misunderstandings and found out much sooner how they cared for one another for real. One of the things I liked most about Emily was that she wasn't perfect and was able to admit when she had made a mistake. For example, she was mad at Callum over what he had written in the book, but was (eventually) willing to listen to his reasoning and admit that she should have given him the benefit of the doubt. And I loved that Callum went to be with her after her grandmother died even though she had been refusing to see him at the time. In that one move he showed Emily how much he cared and that he was committed to her. In the end they once again realized that when they talked things through and really listened to one another they were able to resolve their problems. I was concerned that when she went to him to tell him about the mix up with her negative review that it would be used as another way to put an obstacle between them, so it was with great relief that I found the author actually made it something that brought everyone together.
Every time Callum is in Emily’s presence disaster strikes. He has stepped on her toes multiple times while dancing, spilled things on many of her gowns and even had her fall into a fountain. They are both so very awkward around each other that they manage to avoid each other as much as possible. When his young ward sees Emily in the park and falls in love with her dog, Callum is resigned to do anything to make the orphaned boy smile even if it requires spending time with Emily. As they spend time with each other they realize the awkwardness was due to feelings they had for each other. But can they overcome the secrets they have? I received an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher for my honest review.

Part of a series but I haven't read the others. . I found it odd that an impoverished Duke and his two friends should start to write a romance book. I also found it very unlikely that they would sell a million copies. In that day and age I suspect most books were borrowed from subscription libraries. After all Jane Austen sold 2,000 copies of Emma. I doubt I'll seek out the rest. I liked the interaction of Emily and Callum's ward, Peter.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
