K.L. Slater's thriller Husband and Wife seems like your typical family with normal problems, but it that quickly takes a turn, and things aren't so ordinary. With multiple points of view and different timelines, this slow paced story builds until you realize nothing you assumed was true. No one can be trusted, everyone is keeping secrets, and the truth is ugly.

Parker and Luna leave their son with Parker's parents overnight while the go out for a special event. But before they leave Parker secretly tell his Mom that he need to talk to her when they get back about something important but she can't tell his dad or his wife. But that day doesn't come because Luna and Parker are in a serious car crash leaving both of them to fight for their lives in more ways than one. The truth of what they have kept secret is about to come out, and when it does nothing will be the same.

I really enjoyed this book despite it being filled with unlikeable characters, I thought I knew what was going on but in the end I was duped just like everybody else. If you are a fan like me of twisty thrillers, with endings you don't see coming, then this book is for you. I can't wait to check out more from K.L. Slater.

This certainly was a page-turner with a big twist that I was not expecting.

We start by meeting Sarah, a young mum on a rare night out who meets a shadowy figure in an alleyway on her way home.

We then switch to the point of view of Nicola - a woman who worries that her and her husband are growing apart from her son, Parker, with his cold and snobby wife Luna and their 7-year-old son Barney.

One night Parker and Luna drop off Barney for a rare overnight stay with Nicola and husband Cal and Parker alludes to having something to confess to Nicola. But she never hears the confession as Parker and Luna are involved in a car accident that night and Parker is critically ill.

From here the story ramps up as connections start to emerge linking Parker to Sarah’s murder. We switch from Nicola’s present day perspective to Parker and Luna’s memories of the past - from Luna’s wild jealous streak to Parker’s growing lies.

Whilst the short chapters, constantly switching between characters and timelines, made for a story that was hard to put to one side, I somehow also felt like it wasn’t moving fast enough and was ready to just find out what was happening! Perhaps it was just lacking in a bit of substance for me - it was all build up and tension and not so much story!

When the reveal finally arrived it was a surprise and it was cleverly kept hidden throughout. There were some very unlikeable characters, but I held hope that Nicola would get her answers and Barney would get to stay where he wanted to! I’d have liked to learn more about the real Parker and felt his character was really only seen through a negative light.

A definite page-turner, lacking the thriller X Factor!

A scorned wife is no match for a mother's love in the latest shocking thriller from KL Slater.

Nicola loves her son Parker more than anything and wishes she was able to see him and her grandson Barney more. Parker has a strained relationship with Cal, Nicola's husband and Parker's father, and she isn't sure if that's the reason or if it's because he has more fun with his wife Luna's wealthy parents. They see them all the time!

Nicola finally gets the chance to keep Barney overnight so Parker and Luna can attend some sort of fancy work thing. She couldn't be happier and savors every moment until the doorbell rings late that night and she gets the news every parent dreads. Parker and Luna have been in a terrible accident and Parker may not pull through.

Before he left the day before, Parker had told Nicola he had something important to tell her the next day confidentially. The wait was already stressful but now she may never know.

With new developments in the case of a murdered e-girl, she needs to find out what Parker was keeping from her. She had previously hoped it was something to bring them closer again, but now she just wants a way to clear his name, if only to bring peace to her own soul.

Parker is an easy target to blame because he can't defend himself. Perhaps there are other suspects involved, also close to home.

This was great! It took me a second to get the hang of the format. Switching back and forth in time and narration from too many people, but it ended up being easy to follow because I was so into the story. This blew my mind! It definitely has a lot going on and takes you to some crazy places. This author is amazing.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read and review!

Thank you to #NetGalley, #Bookouture and K. L. Slater for the opportunity to read an advance copy of Husband And Wife, to be published 3 November 2023. 5/5 Stars for this intriguing domestic thriller full of lies, deceit, gaslighting and murder! It was told in alternating points of view over time. Parker and Luna’s marriage was called into question when a local woman is found murdered. Luna’s family and Parker’s family had secrets galore, which eventually come out. Interesting scenario - different from many similar tropes. Great read. #NetGalley #Bookouture #K.L.Slater #HusbandAndWife

“He was trapped. They both were, like two rats in a cage. Both had the capability to destroy one another, but there was a catch. If they revealed each other’s secrets…they’d end up destroying themselves, too.”

I absolutely loved the tension created by the secrets in this masterfully crafted domestic suspense! K.L. Slater spotlights the Vance family and the secrets that bind them. Once revealed, you’ll feel gobsmacked. How could they pull the wool over your eyes? How did Slater do that?

I can always count on Slater to present an ordinary family, doing ordinary things, and suddenly having to deal with the extraordinary. In this case, we have the Vance family. Nicola and Cal are like most grandparents and hope for more time with their grandson. Sounds ordinary, right?! Nicola has recently survived cancer and is lovingly supported by her husband, Cal, who continues to work as a self-employed plumber. They live an ordinary life. Their son, Parker Vance, and his wife Luna Barton-James, are also an ordinary couple hoping to carve out an evening for themselves. They drop their son off with Cal and Nicola while they head to an event in the city. Sounds ordinary, right?

That’s where ordinary ends.

Something unexpected happens that upends the Vance family and throws them all into a tailspin. As each member twirls out of control, all hell breaks loose, revealing a well-disguised network of secrets and lies. As readers try to make sense of it, Slater forges ahead examining betrayal, past wounds, the need to do the right thing, and this ordinary family’s complicated dynamics.

Nicola finds out the hard way that sometimes the quest for privacy is simply an effort to protect others. If only she hadn’t snooped around at Number 4, Orchid Close…

Although all the time-hopping irritated me at first, I realized that the story actually benefits from the way the author chose to unfold it. I was in awe of how Slater controlled the narrative, doling out the twists when they had the most impact.

I was gifted this copy by Bookouture and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

Husband and Wife by K.L Slater

Another great book by this author and like the others it has plenty of twists and turns and gasp out loud unexpected turns.
A husband and wife are involved in an accident . Meanwhile the mother of one who is at their home babysitting is discovering things for herself at their home. What are they or one of them guilty off ? What are they hiding ?
Great characters and told from several points of view , this one will keep you guessing til the end .

I have something very important to tell you. But you mustn’t tell anyone... 🤫

Parker has something private he wants to discuss with his mom, Nicola. But it will have to wait as he is leaving for an overnight event with his wife, Luna. But there’s a good chance this little secret may remain forever silent. Parker and Luna were involved in a serious car accident on the way back to town. Parker's fighting for his life and oddly, his wife refuses to see or talk to anyone!

Nicola, now left to look after her grandson, lets herself into Parker’s home to pick up some extra clothes and necessities. As Nicola repeats a mantra of “I will not snoop…I will not snoop…oh wait! What’s this!?”😱

Now Nicola scrambles to protect her family.

I felt Nicola made for a great MC! A true mama bear that would protect her child no matter the mess they find themselves in. As for Parker and Luna, they’re hiding so many secrets that you’ll question where the truth lies, if any truth exists.

Told from multiple perspectives, all characters were clearly defined and had no trouble following along.

K.L. Slater once again delivers a captivating thriller that’ll have you guessing all the way to the last page. I’m a true fan of this author’s work and look forward to more!

I have only read one K.L.Slater book before, and to be honest, I didn't really enjoy it.
This one, however, is utterly gripping.
Nicola and Cal are Parker's parents. They don't see much of their son. He prefers to spend weekends with his wife Luna's parents, Joe and Marie.
Nicola and Cal are babysitting Barney as Parker and Luna are at an event and staying over. But they leave early and on the way home there is a terrible accident. Parker is gravely ill.
Meanwhile, a grieving mother is waiting for the police to find the person who killed her daughter.
Told from the pov of the characters and police just how do they link together?
This is a fast-paced thriller, and I raced through this. I just needed to find out what happened and who was guilty. I thought I had it worked out, but I was wrong.
I will definitely be reading more by this author. A terrific read.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC in return for an honest review.

Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for access to this arc in exchange for my honest review.

I loved the author's writing style. And even if I hated a character and thought they were the one behind all this, i was very wrong. I really enjoyed the read even if at the beginning, it felt a bit confusing with the pov/time frame jump. But all in all, it was really great. I was a bit sad about one character though.

I think this is the first book I’ve read by this author and I’m wondering why that is. This domestic thriller was so very good. A couple dysfunctional families keeping secrets from each other turns into lots of twists that made me certain several times I knew who the killer was. Not exactly! It was certainly a surprise ending I didn’t see coming. The story was told from the viewpoint of numerous characters. The one thing I didn’t like was the timeline going back and forth. The timeframe and person speaking were clearly stated at the beginning of the chapters though so there was no wondering what was going. Anyone who likes a good mystery/thriller will like this book. I received an arc of this book from NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions expressed are my own.

Thank you to @netgalley and @Bookouture for this ARC. Nicola has finally been asked to take care of her grandson while her son Parker and his wife Luna are attending an event out of town. During the middle of the night, two policeman inform her that there has been an accident. Luna will be ok but Parker is fighting for his life. When Nicola goes by their house to get clothes for her grandson, she finds that the house is for sale, they are sleeping in separate bedrooms and a vital clue from recent murder in the trashbin. She has to get to the bottom of all these secrets and find out what her son is involved with. The ending wasn't what I expected at all. Slater kept me guessing!

This was a fast-paced book with short chapters that kept me guessing till the very end. I loved the character development, the different POVs & timelines. The buildup was perfect and had me on track of who I thought the killer was, then the twist at the end actually surprised me I didn’t see that coming. I do love a book that isn’t obvious to me from the beginning!

Swinging from different points of view, a storyline about secrets and lies and how far you'd go to protect your loved ones even if it meant going against all you believed in.I found all the characters unlikeable and annoying each in their own different way..The storyline was good and well told and even though I had figured out the culprit halfway through it didn't spoil the story for me.
