A bride and groom are getting married on a private island on Lake Garda, when a scream interrupts the ceremony. It soon becomes clear that there is a killer on the island.
Murder on Lake Garda is another five-star read from Tom Hindle.
I absolutely loved the island setting, it really stood out for me. I liked that it felt so remote and isolated because it was only reachable by boat. The characters were truly left by themselves to figure out what was going on.
The plot was very intriguing. From the start I found myself looking for clues, thinking about it like a puzzle. I love the fun of trying to unravel the mystery as the story unfolds.
A thoroughly addictive mystery that you won't be able to put down.
Thank you NetGalley and Penguin for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
A good read with a nice amount of tension. Enjoyed the multiple narrators. Looking forward to reading more from the author.
A well crafted take on a locked room mystery. The mystery? Who has torn apart what should be a happy wedding by murdering a key member of the wedding party? The locked 'room'? A seemingly idyllic Italian island.
Eva Bianchi, a spoilt influencer, has worked hard at ensuring her wedding is the social media event of the year. But secrets and violence are about to rip her big day apart. A piercing scream brings events to a halt. Who would want to cause so much harm and fear on a day meant to be Eva Bianchi the happy couple. And when there's a murderer on the loose, why are the police seemingly blasé about getting to the island?
Tom Hindle is proving himself to be a leading light in the mystery genre. His books aren't cosy, but if you like classic mysteries without grisly details, you'll love this. Think Agatha Christie if she was born 80 years later. And was a man. That's Tom Hindle!
Tom Hindle has a way with his crime novels, of them being very relevant and very succinct in there plotting and characterisation. This his third was no exception.
Set on an Italian island, in a castle, surrounded y Lake Garda is the perfect setting for the wedding of the year. However it turns out it is also the perfect place for murder. Very much in the locked room mystery – the culprit has to be someone on the island. The police have allgedly been called but there seems to be a delay.
With a delay, does that mean more bodies could start stacking up?
The wedding of influencer seems very in fashion at the moment and it shone a not particularly good light on the behind scenes of this choice of career and the ripple effect it has on all those around them. Of course a murder is not going to help matters.
Cleverly told from different perspectives, girlfriend of groom’s brother, best man, the influencers assistant, hotel manager and over different periods of time running up to that fatal moment and then beyond. I raced through the book to get to finding out who is going to be the body (I worked that one out) and then who was the culprit and why (I think I got that one too!)
Just because I followed the clues, and could see the influence that the author has had from other great crime writers, this did not detract in any way from the book and therefore it was a delight to read and I really recommend Tom Hindle.
Two wealthy families are about to join by marriage on an island in the Italian Lakes. However it’s not as idyllic as they have made it look. With one family hiding financial secrets and the other something much more deadly. The guests and even some of the staff have their own agendas. Will the wedding go ahead and who will make it off the island alive?
Having read and not enjoyed A Fatal Crossing by the same author I confess I went into this book not expecting to enjoy it. Whether it was the familiar setting of Lake Garda, the Christie-esque island setting, the stonking good plot or a combination of all three I was pleasantly surprised. I think perhaps the narrated version rather than reading also brought the story to life this time. Whatever it was I thoroughly enjoyed this story and am glad I gave the author another go.
A well constructed plot in the classic British whodunnit style. Set around the shores of Lake Garda the story is built around the marriage of an Italian influencer and a British business man. After a murder occurs Robyn one of the guests with a journalism degree tries to piece together the facts to solve the murder while becoming a suspect herself. There are several strands including the inclusion of members of the Mafia. Past secrets of the bride and groom are revealed along the way.
I enjoyed reading this book but found at times it was too slow moving.
A 'not bad' story, although I did wish that the evocative descriptions of the setting had continued a little further into the story. I'm not normally a huge fan of long descriptions, but it did seem to go from interesting phrases to just being hot or less hot.
The story was quite good - plenty of suspects, although for me (and I'm good at guessing these things) it was fairly obvious from very early on who the culprit was. I do think that many readers may not, though.
There were some nice twists, which is always good.
This book honestly gave me chills! It’s a fantastic mystery and will have you gripped from the first page until the last !
If you’re looking to completely get lost in a story then look no further!
Would highly recommend
Oh this was a great read! A very cleverly crafted who done it!?! Loved the characters, the setting and the drip drip drip of the solution to….. who did it? Loved it!
Classic crime novel. I loved reading this book. I was hooked from the first chapter. I look forward to reading the next book from this author.
This standalone murder mystery continues with the solid plotting and writing that the author already established in The Murder Game but with all new characters and setting.
The isolated island setting is a classic-mystery tradition and Tom Hindle really brings the beautiful scenery to life, in stark contrast to the dead body discovered during the elite wedding. The suspect pool is small (and reducing) as outsider Robyn noses around trying to find out what is going on and who is to blame.
I was reminded a little of other modern ‘wedding party’ murder mysteries like Lucy Foley’s The Guest List, to the point that it actually helped to mislead me about the suspects and motives in places, but this was as unavoidable as a murder mystery on a train reminding one of the ‘Orient Express’ due to the similarity of the situation. I can happily report that this story takes its own unique twists and comes to a completely different conclusion than any predecessors.
While none of the individual characters in this story were particularly memorable, the whole book was nicely constructed and formed another enjoyable classic-style mystery read. I would definitely read more from Tom Hindle, as his mysteries have good hooks and seem to be improving with each new release.
An entertaining murder mystery set in a beautiful setting on Lake Garda. Full of unlikeable characters who are easy to imagine as the murderer, and a plot that is intricate enough to be interesting without being too complicated to be confusing. Nicely done
When she’s invited to her boyfriend’s brother’s wedding on Lake Garda, Robyn is looking forward to a relaxing few days enjoying the scenery. But as the wedding approaches, it’s obvious that there are dark secrets that somebody wants telling. Then murder strikes and all the guests are trapped on the island, waiting for the police to arrive, or the killer to strike again.
I really enjoyed Murder on Lake Garda. Set against a delightful scenery, which is well described by Tom Hindle, the intrigue and suspense builds up gradually, before the final climax. A great read, which kept me guessing as to the motives, and I can’t wait to read more of his novels,
Great story, would thoroughly recommend .
A beautiful bride, a beautiful setting and a murder. All set on an idyllic Italian island but not all is as it seems. Good solid story telling and although I suspect who had done it, there were still enough doubts to keep me reading and to understand the why and how. Classic whodunnit style and a very enjoyable read.

I work within Penguin Random House and received this book as part of Penguin Reads, meaning I am not expected to review in exchange for my free digital copy.
I loved this book, a wedding in a castle on an Italian lake, the perfect setting. Until there's a murder. Really good characters and such great twists and turns. Excellent plot. I've read Tom Hindle's previous books and this is another belter, highly recommend.
Great murder mystery set in a fabulous location. Twisty plot that came together very well. I did guess before the end but it didn’t take anything away from my enjoyment. This is the second book I have read by this author and I would definitely read more.
There were lots of twists and turns. Lots of potential suspects, which I like. The only problem was that I didn’t really like any of the characters, so wasn’t that invested in it. I would have liked an interesting/lovable detective I think!! Can’t imagine being trapped on an island with a murderer - no thank you!
In the beautiful setting of the private island Castello Fiore, a huge party is in preparation for the very special wedding of Laurence, heir to the extremely wealthy Heywood family, to social media influencer Eva, daughter of businessman Vito Bianchi.
There is a whole cast of characters present. Bride, groom and parents, business partners, brothers and sisters, girlfriends, photographer, wedding planner and some rather shady mafiosos. Just as the wedding is about to begin, a great scream is heard, a grim discovery is made on a nearby cove and we plunge into the murky waters of old stories, rivalries, business deals gone wrong, debts of all sorts to be settled, cover ups and strong ambitions.. Robyn, the brother of the groom's girlfriend, puts her investigative journalism training to good use and sets out to find the truth. So many of the characters are unpleasant that the reader has a great choice of baddies and is carefully led in different directions all along the story.
It was the first book by Tom Hindle that I read and I really enjoyed this whodunnit story with all the participants locked into one place, this island, from where they cannot escape and where events continue to enfold all the way along.
A good plot, a great setting and a very entertaining read. Really enjoyed it.
This is a really good read and set in a stunning location, an island in Italy where a family wedding is to take place. The bride is a social media influencer and the groom from a well to do and respected family, however things are not always as they seem.
When the bride disappears, the groomsmen seem on edge and the father of the bride is behaving very suspiciously the story really begins.
Well written with a good storyline and some interesting characters.
Thanks to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an an honest review.
