Book #2 in the Claire Deveraux series. The book could definitely be read as a stand alone but book #1 was a great read introducing the Deveraux sisters and setting them up for future adventures. In NEVER SAY A WORD, Claire is kidnapped by a rich man who decides she will be his next wife. A paralell story line has a US Embassy employee working against Claire's efforts to escape. So far, these books have been full of action with some kick ass women working against their challenges to just get by. Alan Brenham has done a skillful job of matching the characters to their actions and making them heroes in their own rights.
😯🗼Action-filled, unbelievable plot🙄
I picked this book to read because of the Rome and Paris settings. Despite all of the action as identical twins Claire and Megan Deveraux get targeted by a rich, delusional Italian, I was disappointed. The villain and his motives were just too ridiculous and the twins too inept at keeping themselves out of danger that they KNEW was following them. What I am sure was meant as serious suspense became more of a farce.
Thanks to BooksGoSocial and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
This is the second book in the series - Claire, who is deaf, is back living in Paris and working at the American Embassy. However at a function she separated from her friends, drugged and kidnapped by a creepy old guy who is intent on marrying her to replace his dead wife (this is the most unbelievable bit of the whole story - that someone could be manhandled out of a reception with no-one querying if she was ok or why she appeared unconscious!).
Needless to say her twin sister Megan leaves her convent to try to find her missing sister. The result is quite tense, as the scheming kidnapper is very determined and quite obviously (apart from to the Italian authorities) barking mad.
I did enjoy it, although I found it rather unbelievable in parts.

Interesting thriller centering around a hearing impaired victim of a man who is both deluded and capable of harming his victim via coercion and those who work hard to free her. Well done and scary.
I requested and received an EARC from BooksGoSocial via NetGalley.
I was initially interested by the description of this book. One of my favorite genres. I have read so many, and started so many more that just gave out through half of the story. This was NOT one of those. I was addicted from the beginning to end and couldn't put it down. The author did an amazing job!.
