This was quite a twisty thriller, it took me a while to get into it, but the plotting kept me going and, although I had a good guess at the suspect, it was still an excellent read.
A new police procedural/ thriller featuring a Native American main character. Kit Hanover is a new police detective who must face racial prejudice from her day on the job. Partnered with a veteran who makes her job harder than necessary, she will work twice as hard to prove herself. In a twist, Kit is moved to Vice where she will be undercover working to clear a money for sex ring. When bad goes to worse, Kit must face some of the worst crime scenes imaginable.
For a new series, this book seemed "busy" to me. First books should introduce the characters and the community in which they will live and work. It should establish a base for the books to come. While Alan Brenham did this, it seemed rushed as he added so many events that the main characters seemed to always be reacting to another blow to either their head or hearts. The book is well worth reading, it just will be ineteresting to see how the next story plays out.
Kit Hanover has recently graduated and is now in her first job in the Homicide Division. However, she is partnered with an ascerbic, racist, mysogynistic man. Their first case is a messy killing - the man was severely beaten, shot and then tipped into water.
A second strand concerns 'Ken' who is desperately jealous, determined his wife will not be seduced away from him but convinced she is having an affair.
From this, Kit's family are drawn into a maelstrom of hatred, as 'Ken' focuses on them as seducers and responsible for his failing marriage.
Its well written, although I guessed the perpetrator quite early on. The author plays the strings well, leading the reader to suspect this person and that as we try to work out who 'Ken' is. A few scenes didn't work; there's no way several characters would not have realised who the villain was, but I won't give things away.
A fun read. Thank you to NetGalley and Books Go Social for allowing me access to the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley for my copy of When Things Fall Apart by Alan Brenham.
This is the first book in the Kit Hanover series and the pace moves fast.
If you can suspend belief about some of the events it makes a good read.

In the beginning I was less than thrilled with the manic excessive violence. Immediately it was followed by a loser cop spouting ethnic name calling and baiting of the new detective (it was like getting slapped in the face with a day-old codfish). Interesting that it was confined to newbie status and ethnicity while essentially skipping the customary bias against females in the detective division. Otherwise, the investigation and other aspects of police work was OK and the storyline interesting. I am well aware that these things happen, but I read fiction to get away from the realities I know and loathe. I think that a little less graphic brutality would go a long way to making this a desirable series. Love the character of Homicide Detective Kit Hanover.
I requested and received an EARC from BooksGoSocial via NetGalley. Thanks.
I struggled to get through this book, the story itself had a good premise, and the fact that the new detective is ending up trying to solve her own father's murder in itself is a hook that got my attention. However, I struggled with the many grammatical errors that I found in the book, and the style of writing didn't offer enough feeling for me, it was very cut and dry and assembly line if you will. I have a couple other books by this author, I'm hoping they might be more interesting to me!
When things fall apart
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this eARC.
Well, this was a great police procedural, but it certainly doesn't pull any punches as a wonderful and loving family is entirely ripped apart completely by an otherwise insignificant loser's jealousy.
First in a series, I would definitely be interested in reading more about "newbie" homicide detective Native American Kit Hanover.
However, the author might keep in mind that one brutal crime is enough for an unlucky, innocent family to experience, you needn't make it three-fold, not sure what if anything the added crimes contributed to the story, the initial one was horrific enough.
Knocking a star of for that little bit of gratuitous violence, otherwise a fine read.
I was initially interested by the description of this book. One of my favorite genres. I have read so many, and started so many more that just gave out through half of the story. This was NOT one of those. I was addicted from the beginning to end and couldn't put it down. The author did an amazing job!.
