I enjoyed this non fiction read and learning the history and what life was like at that time. Very informative and I enjoyed how it was written

Absolutely facinating read that examines a snapshot in time that's very rarely discussed, especially from this perspective. Black Angels looks at tuberculosis during the 1920s and beyond on Staten Island through the eyes of the Black nurses charged with the care of patients within the hospital of Sea View. It was a time when immeasurable patients were dying, daily, and as a result of the highly contagious disease white nurses left the hospital in droves. This left a corner of the profession to be upheld by Black nurses, and they took to their task with all of the quiet dignity you would expect. Not only were they at the forefront for caring for over 1000 patients from the 1920s to post WWII and beyond, but also in helping to find a cure for this horrendous disease. And yet they seem to have been completely erased from the history books. Maria Smilios does a tremendous job at uplifting these unheard voices and telling their story in a way that is both intriguing and incredibly moving.

Amazing piece of medical nonfiction.
