A quick, sharp, and ultimately sad read that will keep you guessing about what happened to who, and is full of tangled, dark threads.
Jane, the detective, is struggling with her own losses and impending single motherhood, but she's dogged, resilient, and open to growing her worldview.
Annalise, the body they find, the bones that speak, and unravel a nearly 50 year-old mystery in ways that I did not expect when I first started this book. While we never see anything from her living perspective, she's just a kid, and a kid who was lost long before she was buried beneath the chapel on the mountain.
There was so much to like about this book, and some of it is the reality that a lot of people aren't likable. They are full of good and bad things, and everyone has regrets and secrets. Some are willing to drag the pain into the light, even if it seems like it's too late. There were definitely some twists I didn't see coming, and a few red herrings that were fun to chase even when they weren't the resolution. A great mystery, and an attention-keeping way to spend a few hours.
Homicide detective Jane Munro Is just about to go on to maternity leave but after old human bones are discovered on a construction site Jane is given the case and makes the wrong assumption this will be a straight forward case, it is anything but!
The discovered bones reveal long buried secrets and the case takes on a new life.
Great thriller by a wonderful author.
I thought this was an intriguing mystery—a 50 year old cold case that could negatively impact several high standing members of the community, the group of friends referred to as the Shoreview Six. The story after the initial discovery of the bones moved pretty slowly with so many different POV to follow. I had trouble keeping up with all the different characters at first. But the story started heating up and the tension building and I couldn't wait to find out what happened next. I think it could have been better and easier to follow if the focus was on the main key characters but overall I really liked the story.
Thanks to Montlake through Netgalley for the advance copy of this book. The opinions in this review are my own and given voluntarily.
Homicide Detective Jane Munro is called to the scene of an excavation that has uncovered long bones, one still wearing a high heeled boot. The body was under the chapel at the ski resort. Rumors were that the chapel was haunted or was the body buried beneath longing to be found? As she and her team investigate, they concentrate on Annalise Jansen, a missing teen who was fifteen when she went missing over forty years ago. As the word spreads, we learn that there was a pact made among six friends, the Shoreview Six, who are suddenly worried how the body will affect them. One person can keep a secret, but can six? Jane is pregnant and missing her fiancé and the father of her child who disappeared in the Cayoosh Mountains. She has personal decisions to make, but concentrates on finding justice for Annalise. Jane has the assistance of her friend and forensic expert Dr. Ella Quinn. Will they find out who killed Annalise and why? I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)
I am not usually a true crime/mystery reader. The gritty details of that kind of story tend to put me off. But Loreth Anne White is an exception to that. She takes an actual event and makes it real, but still gives the reader a certain distance from it while involving us at the same time. She is an exceptional writer and one of my favorites.
The discovery of human bones buried beneath an old skier's chapel at a ski resort set in motion the reopening of a case that is almost fifty years cold and thought to have been resolved. When Annalise Jansen and Darryl Hendricks both go missing after a party, the police assume they ran off together, even though neither is ever heard from again. This doesn't cut it with Jane Munro who has recently lost her fiancé and is living in the same limbo the families have lived in for 47 years.
As Jane digs deep into this cold case, she uncovers several secrets that Annalise took with her to her grave. It soon becomes apparent that her friends, the Shoreview Six, have lied about certain aspects of that night. Now all she has to do is find the weak link in this group to solve the case. That may not be so easy as these teens have all gone on to become well respected members of the communities. But with the help of forensic anthropologist, Dr. Ella Quinn, she now has evidence that the original investigators never had. As Annalise's body tells her story, cracks form in the alliance of the Shoreview Six and soon the terrible secrets are reveled.
My thanks to the Publisher and Author for providing a complimentary digital Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this novel via NetGalley. This is my fair, honest and personal review. All opinions are mine alone and were not biased in any way.
Twisty/turny thriller with multiple POV’s. I loved everything about it! Kept the pages quickly turning and I couldn’t put it down. I love everything I’ve read from this author….this book was exceptional. I highly recommend!! Thank you NetGalley and Montlake for allowing me to read this ARC!!
I always hear great things about Loreth Anne White's books so I've been eager to finally read one, and The Unquiet Bones was a great place to start.
A well-developed detective thriller, The Unquiet Bones is a brilliantly detailed story, and I can tell that White is a talented writer. I got a great sense of the characters and the setting, making me feel right in the centre of this investigation.
I really liked the idea of the bones being able to speak their story, and the time taken to get to know all of the characters and their pasts. It gives you plenty of motives to suspect, and the twists were much darker than I expected so they certainly took me by surprise.
There's still a lot that I want to know about Jane though, so I would definitely be interested in this becoming a series.
I’ve enjoyed some of the author’s other books. I wanted to read The Unquiet Bones because I loved the title and the blurb really appealed to me. I had a great time with this book. It’s the kind of twisty thriller I prefer with multiple narrative point of views and so many twists and turns you’re not sure what’s going on. The book is fast-paced, well-written and totally absorbing. I found it gripping from start to finish. I’d recommend this.
Ok, there were just too many POVs in this book. Usually I loved alternating POVs but this was just confusing and hard to follow. I did like the books but the amount of characters significantly brought my rating down.
4.25⭐
Meet homicide detective Jane Munro. Who knows how precious life can be. After all, she's currently pregnant with her missing fiancee Matt's baby, and has recently been reassigned to the basement to work on cold cases.
Which is why she gets called to a work site in the woods. Where two brothers demolishing an old chapel, have discovered human remains, remains that appear to be around fifty-years old. As the bones are attached to a platform boot popular in the 1970s.
And Jane, at , feels a sense of purpose and a chance to finally get at least one family some closure.
As one particular case from that period stands out. That of missing teen Annalise Jansen.
But for her friends dubbed the shoreview six this discovery threatens a long buried secret and a pledge made nearly fifty years ago.
A pledge they will go to any lengths to keep quiet.
But forensic anthropologist Dr Ella Quinn can read bones and make them talk and when another set of remains is discovered. It's clear that it's not only Annalise that has lots of big secrets to tell.
And with a story told from multiple points of view, including the shoreview six, Jane, Dr Ella Quinn and a journalist out to make a name for herself. This was a captivating mystery.
That balances the two timelines well. But does get a little confusing thanks to the number of points of view. Especially as names seemed to change from first to last to nicknames.
However, it's extremely well researched, interesting and intriguing, and I did enjoy it a lot.
This book had me hooked right from the beginning, it’s such a page turner!
Fast-paced, short chapter, easy to read and great writing style makes this police procedural murder mystery book hard to put down!
The multiple POVs is a great touch to the story, readers will be able to see from the investigation view, from the media and public view as well as the people who were involved in the missing girl and boy in 1976.
This story has secrets darker and crueler which left me absolutely shocked and in disbelief after learning the truth. There’s one particular twist that blows my mind because it never crossed my mind when I was making theories about what happened the night two teenagers went missing.
I felt so bad for what happened to the victims and I’m surprised to know that their bones can ‘speak’ the truth which bring closure to their loved ones as well as justice to the ones responsible.
That brings me to one of the most intriguing aspect from this story; human bones can tell a lot about a particular person - whether they’re healthy or sick, their gender, their age, etc.
Overall, this is a thrilling well written story that comes with a mind-blowing twist and satisfying ending.
I’ll definitely look forward to read more books from this author in the future – I wish this one becomes a series though cause I’d like to see more of Det. Jane!
I received an advanced review copy for free through Netgalley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Huge thank you to the author and publisher!

I’m a big fan of White’s work. The Unquiet Bones by Loreth Anne White was another fantastic and cleverly written story.
I really enjoyed the author's vivid characterizations as well as the book's riveting and compelling police procedurals.
The plot is filled with unexpected twists that maintain a gripping pace till the end.
It’s a fascinating blend of suspense and thrill.
All in all, this was another riveting, well-executed thriller.

𝑴𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒔:
It's no secret that Loreth Anne White is one of my favourite thriller authors. Her books never fail to grip me from the very beginning and with this book it was no different!
While I appreciated the way the well-hidden secrets and truths gradually came to light, in typical White style, I would have liked to know the fate of some of the characters in the book and get some explanation.
In particular, the death of one of the characters was not satisfactorily explained, which made me think this might be the start of a series.
But all in all a solid thriller which had all the right ingredients that I love in a true crime!
𝑨𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒐𝒐𝒌:
The story starts with a bang when human bones are discovered near a ski resort on Hemlock Mountain in Canada.
Homicide Detective Jane Monroe, heavily pregnant, has been struggling to come to terms with her husband's disappearance ever since he went hiking last autumn! Now she just wants to find out who these human remains belong to so she can give the family the closure they deserve.
But things get complicated when the murder case is linked to the disappearance of a young girl in the 1970s. She was one of the Shoreview Six, a group of teenagers who are now all prominent members of society. Did one of them get away with murder? And what are they willing to do to prevent the truth from coming out?
Loreth Anne White has done it again, this cold-case thriller, inspired by a true story, had me on the edge of my seat all the way to the heartbreaking ending.
When homicide detective Jane Munro unearths human bones beneath an old chapel, she reopens the decades-old case of missing teen Annalise Jansen, unraveling a web of secrets among the affluent members of the Shoreview Six, who find their dark past resurfacing and threatening to expose the terrible pledge made on an early autumn night forty-seven years ago.
For fans of Bones and Pretty Little Liars.
Annalise Jansen vanished after a night of partying, she was fifteen, that was in 1976. Her friends, named the Shoreview Six, in the media, steer attention to a young man who disappeared the same night. In 2023 bones are found under an old chapel in the woods. The cold case is given to Detective Jane Munro. Jane is dealing with her own private issues, she is pregnant and her fiancé disappeared on a solo hiking trip six months prior, not knowing about the baby.
The story is told from different POVs and dual timelines. We learn alot about all the players, but the author keeps us guessing as twists and surprises are are reveled. It is not long before a second body is discovered.
We have a smart tenacious reporter, Angela Sheldrick, wanting to get the story first. Dr. Ella Quinn is the forensic anthropologist that reads the "unquiet bones". These characters, along with Jane, work to bring closure to the victims.
This was another great mystery from Loreth Anne White. The mystery kept me engaged and I feel (and hope) that we will see Jane, Angela and Dr. Quinn again. I want to know what happened to Jane's fiancé.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher, Montlake, for an ARC. The review is my own.
The Unquiet Bones delves into a chilling tale where human bones unearth a decades-old mystery, connecting the present to a haunting past. Loreth Anne White crafts a rich atmosphere, immersing readers in a bone-chilling narrative that keeps the pages turning.
The story's intricate plot kept me hooked from start to finish, with each twist and turn heightening the suspense. The unraveling of secrets among the group of friends, known as the Shoreview Six, adds layers of complexity to the investigation, keeping readers guessing.
One of the highlights of the novel is its protagonist, homicide detective Jane Munro. Her relatable character and unwavering determination make her a compelling lead, anchoring the narrative with her likability and strength.
Overall, The Unquiet Bones is a gripping read for fans of mysteries, cold cases, and police procedurals. With its compelling storyline, rich atmosphere, and engaging characters, this book is sure to captivate readers who enjoy unraveling intricate puzzles and uncovering hidden truths.
Thank you NetGalley and Loreth Anne White for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Loreth Anne White has become a favorite author ever since my first book of hers last year.
I find her writing to be so incredibly elevated and talented. She is fresh, writes unique stories that really get your brain thinking and engaged.
The Unquiet Bones was my first book by Loreth Anne White, but it won't be my last! This book follows Jane, a pregnant RCMP detective who is dealing with the disappearance of her fiancé six months prior. She gets reassigned to a cold case unit, and her first case on this unit is the discovery of a skeleton underneath a chapel at a ski lodge. It turns out the skeleton is that of a teenage girl who disappeared forty seven years before. after walking home alone from a party. At the same time as the teenage girl disappeared, her classmate/math tutor disappeared as well, and many people blamed him for her disappearance. As Jane digs into the two disappearances, she re-questions the girls group of friends, known as the Shoreview Six. All of the six are hiding secrets, and they will do anything to keep their secrets, and the truth about what happened that night, buried forever.
I really enjoyed this book! I think this would be a good intro police procedural, for someone new to the genre. I really enjoyed Jane's character, and would love to read another book about her. I also enjoyed getting the perspective of each of the six friends, and seeing what role, if any, they played in the events that happened. I did find that the perspective of the journalist, Andrea, didn't add much to the story, and I feel like it could have been taken out. The final answer to the mystery really shocked me, as I did not see that twist coming at all. I really enjoyed the story, and would recommend this one.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a free ARC of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.
3.5 stars rounded to 4 for Goodreads.
The Unquiet Bones is a good book. The story is quite involved, great plot, and it definitely keeps you guessing.
We have Jane a likeable cold case detective, who knows what it’s like to have a missing loved one, put in charge of a new set of bones that were discovered buried underneath a chapel.
With not much to go on, she and the other professionals try to solve a 47 year old murder. This brings you to the “Shoreview Six”. We quickly learn that a bunch of high school kids were linked somehow to the person that was found. Of course they are all grown up now with lives and families of their own, but we learn also of their pasts. There a few others that cause investigating for their possible involvement with the murder. People you should trust.
There are a lot of characters in this book, a lot. That would be my biggest criticism, as I don’t think they were all necessary. The reporter irked me, could have definitely kept that aspect out of the book.
Overall it was really well done, the ending and the final conclusion of who, and why this heinous crime ever took place is gut wrenching. I will definitely be reading more Loreth Anne White’s books in the future.
Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake for the opportunity to read an advanced copy.
Loreth Anne White does not disappoint and I really enjoyed her latest. This book is very procedural and has lots of characters and points of view, all of which were written superbly. I kind of figured out the killer but there were a lot of intricacies that occurred in getting there and a few things surprised me. This author is a true master of crime fiction -- give this one a read!
The Unquiet Bones comes out next week on March 5, 2024 and you can purchase HERE.
"Whoa! Whoa. Stop!" he screams, shooting his hand into the air and making a slicing motion across his neck.
Raphael halts the excavator arm. He hops down from the cab and runs over to where Benjamin has crouched. Benjamin carefully brushes damp soil off the long object that has been pulled up in the dirt. His heart hammers. He glances at Raphael.
They have hooked two big, long bones.
Benjamin knows they are not from a large animal because the thing hanging off the end of them is a boot.
A woman's boot with a platform heel.
