I’m a newcomer to Nora Roberts and didn’t know what to expect from ‘Inheritance,’ first in her Lost Bride trilogy. This amazing, page-turning, gothic slash romance slash suspense story had me grabbing every spare minute to read another couple of pages. I’m a Nora Roberts convert, are all her books like this?
‘Inheritance’ ticks all the gothic romance boxes. An unexpected inheritance. A haunted house. A conflicted heroine who faces challenges in her life. Ghosts with personality. And a handsome hero. Sonya MacTavish’s wedding plans take a U-turn thanks to her cheating fiancé, so when she discovers the hidden truth of her father’s birth and has an opportunity to change her life, she grabs it. Sonya inherits not only a mansion but the money to run it and a support network of local lawyers and tradespeople.
Surprising herself by loving the lonely seafront mansion and the small town nearby, city girl Sonya soon hears bumps in the night – and the day – and discovers Lost Bride mansion (its nickname locally) has other residents besides herself. Sonya, who prefers to call a spade a spade and refuses to be intimidated by the unknown, gets herself a rescue dog, learns to cook pot roast and wins new clients for her freelance graphic design business. There are new family members to meet, her lawyer and his relatives, the man who cuts logs and sweeps snow from the drive and a chef in town who shares her recipes.
Sonya loves her new life and refuses to be cowed by the slamming doors and weeping in the night, a decision which means she must confront the ghosts and solve a mystery to lift the curse.
A bit silly in places, funny, heartwarming and spine tingly. Loved it. And what a great ending, beware, it’s a cliffhanger. Bring on number two, ‘The Mirror.’

Inheritance is a well-written gothic romance with a hint of mystery.

I absolutely loved Sonya, she is such a relatable character and I found myself really invested in her story.

I enjoyed the romance however I felt that it happened a bit too quickly and would have enjoyed more of a slow burn however this is just personal preference.

The ending has ruined me, I did not expect to be left on such a cliffhanger and now I am desperate to find out what happens next.

Thanks to NetGalley and Little, Brown Book Group for providing me with this arc.

3.5 stars.

this was a good read overall. i love stories that have secrets, romance, and give me the spooks, and this was all of the above. the scenery was hauntingly beautiful, the romance sweet, and the premise very promising. however, i felt like the plot was a bit lacking throughout the book, and that everything was rushed towards the end. overall, this wasn't bad, but i've read other nora roberts books before that i enjoyed more! that's not to say i won't read the second one, because i definitely will. :)

Inheritance by Nora Roberts is the first book in a new trilogy, The Lost Bride. It's a mix of genres, offering romance, suspense, a touch of the paranormal, and historical fiction.

The story follows Sonya MacTavish, whose life takes an unexpected turn when she learns of a long-lost uncle and inherits his mysterious Victorian mansion on the Maine coast. However, there's a catch: she must live in the house for three years to claim her full inheritance.

As Sonya settles in, she uncovers family secrets. The house turns out to hold hidden ghosts, not just literal ones trapped within its walls, but also the secrets of her family's past connected to a tragic love story from the 1800s.

What I liked:

Intriguing mystery: The book keeps you guessing, weaving together past and present narratives to unveil the truth about the house and family history.
Strong characters: Sonya is a relatable protagonist, resourceful and brave as she explores the unknown. The supporting characters are well-developed too, adding warmth and humor to the story.
Romantic subplot: Nora Roberts delivers her signature heartwarming romance while balancing it with the other plot elements.
Unique blend of genres: The mix of history, suspense, and a touch of the paranormal keeps the story fresh and engaging.

Nora Roberts can do no wrong. Having read most of her mystery/romance novels and loving all of them I always look forward to a Nora roberts novel in any genre she delves into. This was the perfect opening to a new series. Hauntingly beautiful with a sweet romance twisting through the narrative. Brilliant. Cannot wait for the next instalment.

I adore Nora Roberts, her novels are just so confident and deep. The characters always feel so relatable and the sense of loss and great hope are always balanced in the end. Thank you.

I have read many Nora Roberts, but recently the plots are getting a bit samey for me. Don’t get me wrong I did enjoy this and Sonja and Cleo are great characters and you do want the curse to be lifted. Frustrated in how it finished, but a cliffhanger of course. Will look forward to the next one.

Nora Roberts is one of the most read fantasy&sci-fi author in the world. There's romance but there's always a great world building and plot.
This is the start of a new series and I loved the storytelling and can't wait to read the next one.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine

Another great Nora Roberts book. The usual format, but a different type of tale this time. I enjoyed ready the whole book and it has left me wanting to read the next book. What more could you want?!?! Please publish it soon :) Nora takes you on an historical journey to learn the history of the house she has inherited and what happened in it and how she can stop the evil spirit

The writing is great, really compelling to read and engaging but the plot is really thin. Our main character doesn't really make a decision to do anything about her haunted house until the very last chapter and I feel like a solid third of the middle could have been cut. The MC spends way more page time working on her pitch for a new client than dealing with the malevolent serial killer ghost she lives with.

Roberts has a lovely way with dialogue that makes it feel like a real conversation, but when nothing is really happening it starts to feel mundane and repetitive, especially when something happens and then the characters have a whole conversation repeating what just happened.

Warning! This is the first in a trilogy - there's a cliff hanger

Cosy story with strong women, a romance and a spooky element with the ghost story/past events making themselves known in the present.

Good read.

I enjoyed this. If you've read a Nora Roberts or a JD Robb book then you know what you're about to pick up. Over the years I had read Nora Roberts' books (she's an easy read but not a must buy for me) I know there have been times when she has included supernatural elements into her romance novels. This time she fully embraces the supernatural as the main character moves into a haunted mansion she has inherited.
The story unfolds as she aims to finds peace for the spirits she lives with as well as peace for herself after finding her cheating fiance in bed with her cousin.
An enjoyable easy read.

I gave this 3.5 stars. Overall there is an impressively cosy feel to a ghost story. The main character is living all my dreams with the library and the quirky old house.

I enjoyed the start of the book and was quickly hooked. I did find it lagged a bit in the middle.

I found the dialogue a bit cringey particularly the women repeatedly not wanting to be seen without make up.

That cliffhanger though, holy hell. I had forgotten this book was the start of a trilogy and the wait for the sequel will be painful!

Inheritance is the first book in Nora Roberts new series The Lost Bride Trilogy and what a start it is. It had me hooked from the beginning with its interesting characters and fantastic storyline and what an ending. I cannot wait for the next book in the trilogy.

Thank you to NetGalley and Little, Brown Book Group UK, for my ARC.

I am a big fan of Nora Roberts but tend to prefer her thriller books rather than her paranormal books but when I saw that Inheritance was the first book in a new trilogy I just had to give it a try and I am so glad I did. I was hooked from the first page to the last and now I cannot wait for the following two books to come out. I really enjoyed it.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for my ARC.

Thank you to NetGalley and little brown book for providing me an arc of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I grew up reading Nora roberts books in high school and Witness is my favourite from her. Inheritance, however, was a completely different experience. It took me out of my comfort zone.

I have read a few Nora Roberts books, this style is very different to her JD Robb books but I have liked them before, this didn't feel up to the usual standard, I felt it was very padded and words were just written with no real purpose of where they were headed, I didn't finish and i can't see me ready the other two.

Loved it! Very much the Nora Roberts genre I love. I cannot wait for the next one. Has all the classic Nora Roberts tropes but manages to avoid being staid.

The start of a new paranormal trilogy from Nora Roberts and with a gothic cliff top mansion, a curse that has targeted brides in the Poole family for generations and mysterious mirror that can bridge time, Inheritance had me absorbed from the start. Sonya McTavish is shocked when a lawyer turns up on her doorstep and informs her that her deceased father who’d been adopted as a baby had actually been a twin and the uncle she’d never known she had had left her his house in Maine and the means to pay for its upkeep. Having recently set up her own business working from home, Sonya decides there’s nothing stopping her from going to Poole’s Bay and finding out more about her father’s family and why he’d been given up for adoption.

As usual from Nora Roberts this book was so full of details and descriptions it was easy to picture scenes playing out in my mind as I read to the extent that I jumped when someone knocked on my door just as evil ghost Hester started her nonsense in the manor and considering as a rule “I ain’t afraid of no ghosts!’ it tells you how caught up I was in this story. I loved the spooky vibes of the plot of seven dead brides through the ages supposedly all from accidental causes except for the original bride and their missing wedding rings and their trapped spirits all playing out in the background of the romance between Sonya and Oliver Henry Doyle the third aka Trey. A man who could’ve worked at any top legal firm in the country but choose to practice family law in his hometown with her father and grandfather. There was just something so calm and dependable about him. With the spooky goings on and numerous ghosts – adored Clover and her musical choices – and fabulous secondary characters in respective bffs Cleo and Owen, and there’s definitely more than a little spark between this pair, Inheritance has been an amazing start to the Lost Brides trilogy. My one complaint would be having to wait a year for the next instalment to find out what happens next after that gripping cliffhanger.
