The Mist-Walker is a graphic novel that tells the story of a half ogre, Temperance, and the community of witches that raises her. The witch community lives next to a forest that is plagues by a magical entity called the mist. And even though "mist" conjures images of serenity, dewy mornings, and soft skin in my mind, this mist is anything but serene. If any characters ever enter it, the mist will attack them and likely result in a death.
The witches grow squashes to deter the mist from entering their village. But when this story takes place, the squashes have stopped working, and the mist poses a newly reinvigorated threat to their community. The story then follows Temperance as she leads a group of witches in a fight against the mist.
The biggest strength of this graphic novel, in my mind, is the art. The illustrations evoked the art of Mary Blair, the mid-century concept artist who worked on the early art of Disney movies, such as Alice in Wonderland. The colors are cohesive and a pleasure to behold. The art successfully brings together the magical forest fantasy vibe that the graphic novel lives in.
The story, on the other hand, seemed like a series of events that, even though they made some logical sense, we're not motivated by any deeper character development. It is here that the graphic novel falls through and becomes less enticing than it could potentially be.
In the end, it took me way longer than it should have to read this graphic novel. The lack of deep character development, in my mind, was a big reason behind that.
Thank you, netgalley, the book's author and publisher, for a free advance reader copy of The Mist-Walker in exchange for an honest review.
In The Mist-Walker, Stéphane Fert uses vibrant colors and bold strokes to tell a coming-of-age story that feels both timeless and modern. Through the story of Temperance, an Ogre adopted by witches when she was just a baby, the author explores ideas of identity, difference, and acceptance. The plot is complex and well thought out, and the world-building is impeccably magical. I will definitely be looking forward to the second installment of this graphic novel.

Rating 4 stars
I could not love this book more. The illustrations are beautiful, the colors are amazing, and I love all the witches. I am only mad that I have to wait for more!
What an interesting graphic novel experience.
It follows Temperance and a coven of witches as they journey through the forest to fight the mist and Temperance embraces her magic.
The story felt very wandery and quite confusing but the art was lovely. I loved the characters and the flowly ethereal way things moved through the book.
I definitely will look for the next volume to see where the story goes.
Thanks to NetGalley and Europe Comics for an eARC
I love the artwork so much!! The shapes and colors are exquisite. I can't wait to read what happens next!
2.5 rounded down. Absolutely loved the art, but the storytelling wasn't really compelling to me and the characters didn't draw me in as much either. I think there was a lot that was going on, and while I was interested in the threads, as it kept going on, I started to lose interest. Once again, the art is absolutely gorgeous and there were definitely parts in the story that did pull me in emotionally, but I wasn't invested in most of the characters enough to want to continue.
What a fun read! Perfect for fall with the witches and Halloween vibes.
The artwork was beautiful and the colour palette throughout the book is just gorgeous.
It also made me laugh a few times, some characters were really funny 😄
I thoroughly enjoyed this graphic novel, and can’t wait for the second installment. The art is singular and stunning, full of rich colors and interesting, folksy flair.
The story follows Temperance, a young ogress raised by witches, as she learns about who she really is and what’s she’s capable of after being forced on a journey to save her village from “the mist.” The same mist she was apparently born within.
The mist mutates people and animals, resulting in some delightfully sinister creatures for Temperance to fight.
I’d recommend this for mature teens and older, as there’s some (non-sexual) nudity and violence. I love that body diversity is celebrated in this book, including a plus size main character. It’s also sapphic, and features a diverse cast of characters.

First things first, this is an ARC review of The Mist-Walker. Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for making this available to me to review.
Summary: Temperance is a ogress (half-ogress?) adopted by a coven of witches who take on a mysterious force, the Mist, that comes for them. She and her found family set off on a journey to solve the mystery and save the rest of the coven.
Review: The artwork in The Mist-Walker is stunning. I would keep panels from this graphic novel on my wall if I could. Each character was so uniquely designed that you could never mix up anyone and they were all such diverse characters that made it an incredible read.
I would say that the only issue I had was that there were some unexplained plot holes that were not resolved. I'm not sure if that's because it was translated from French and so it got a little lost in translation or if it will be addressed later, since this seems to be the start of a series. That is the only reason it is not a 5-star review.
It is a perfect read if you are looking for diverse witches with incredible artwork. It gives pastel Halloween vibes.
Thanks to NetGalley! God how I love strong Ogre-Woman!!!!
This is a lovely first volume of a graphic novel, with a very heartful and promising story going forward. Can`t wait to read more of this!
This was such an atmospheric and fun witchy time! I enjoyed this graphic novel so much and looking forward to continuing the series. I loved the art, it had the dark blueish color palette that I love. There were some parts of the story that I wish had been expanded upon as well as the ending felt very abrupt. Overall I really enjoyed this story and all the witchy fall vibes.
As a start to a series, I am intrigued. The art is unique and fun. I am enjoying the world, which seems both familiar and unfamiliar. The author has done a good job revealing the story by leaving little bread crumbs and insights for the reader. There are little hints that give insight into the characters and the world. These were fun little details. My one criticism is pacing. The cliffhanger didn't really feel like a cliffhanger because we didn't really see Temperance struggle physically or mentally with her choice. There wasn't much build up.
However, I'm very curious to read more. The world building and art hooked me. I want to see where the story is going.
I would recommend this book to those who like Beetle and the Hollowbones and Thirsty Mermaids.
The Mist-Walker is a perfect graphic novel for anyone excited for Halloween. The illustrations are gorgeous and I loved the world Stéphane Fert has created. The story centers on Temperance, a half-ogress and the community of witches that raise her. The characters are heartwarming and I loved the adventure story that is unfolding- I can’t wait to see what comes next. It’s a great cozy read!
Very quick comic, artwork is so beautiful, love the colours in this one.
The story was interesting, read in one sitting, lots of witches, some magical mist, bad ogres, perfect for autumn.
Thank you NetGalley for providing digital advanced copy in exchange for honest review.
A beautifully drawn post apocalyptic fairytale in which an orphan ogress is raised by a village of witches surrounded by a dangerous mist.
I loved the art style with its soft edges and calming palette. The characters were funny, well-rounded and compelling. Grisette’s backstory ❤️!
I liked the ecological undertones of the magic system, how even magic can take its toll on nature and must be practiced carefully. Also the outcast even among outcasts trope.
The plot was interesting but sometimes it felt a bit too fast paced, especially towards the end.
The relationship between Temperance and Helen was a bit abrupt.
A wonderful start for a series, I want to see what’s next!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for providing me with an arc for an honest review
Thanks to the publisher and netgalley for the earc for review.
This was the cutest graphic novel, I am obsessed with the graphics, it felt cosy even when there were risks. I loved the balance of humour and danger and the found family aspect was a great layer including the theme of accepting people who are different to you, I look forward to continuing my journey in this world in the future.
First off I want to thank #netgalley for the advanced copy of this #graphicnovel #europecomics and the author Stephane Fert for a great story with great art!
This is the cutest graphic novel I’ve read in awhile. The art is impeccable but the storyline grabs you and takes you to their world.
This is fantastic and I cannot wait to see what’s next! I love the art style and the community the witches have with each other. This was so good and interesting, and the lore development between chapters really rounded out this story.
Thank you to Netgalley, Europe Comics, and Stéphane Fert for an advanced copy of this book! All opinions are my own.
Temperance is an ogre who is adopted into a community of witches as a baby. Her very existence seems to cause serious contention among The Lost Ones (aka non-magical humans) and the witches. She was raised by Grizzelda, who is known for her affinity for growing plants in harmony and using them for various purposes. She feeds and helps many people including those from outside her community. Grizzelda once lived among the humans until there is a conflict that forces her to flee to the witch's home with baby Temperance and an arrow in her back. It is hinted that Grizzelda has secrets and suspicions that she is not ready to share, but that may be of use to Temperance finally understanding who she is.
The mist is a leering threat throughout the entire graphic novel and a great source of mystery. Anyone who gets lost in it becomes a mutant with no memory of their past life. We briefly see that the characters are living in a post-apocalyptic world. So, it's possible that the mist could be a symptom or reaction to something from the past. The story ended on a cliffhanger and left many questions unanswered. Hopefully, what caused the downfall of the old world and other unanswered questions will be explained in future installments. Some several characters and relationships are also pretty vague.
My favorite part of this book was the art. The soft, mute palette made it stunning. I really enjoyed reading this graphic novel and look forward to reading future installments.
