The art in this was stunning. I was definitely grabbed by the cover which is absolutely gorgeous.
I'm usually able to read graphic novels in one sitting, but this took me a few days with a bit of pep-talking in between. I think the premise of The Mist-Walker is intriguing, on the outset it seems a bit like a light-ish fantasy that will focus on a mother/daughter relationship and have strong feminist themes. With a bit more grit, if anything. What we get is a meandering plot that never quite roots itself to one cause. Wouldn't a more cathartic ending have included the women *ahem* working together?
Overall it felt fairly obvious that the author of this book is A MAN who has no real emotional stake in the relationships and experiences he was attempting to depict.
Also, the book overall relied too heavily on pop-culture depictions of witches. For example, a herd of women running naked through a forest, or standing in a circle, or finding a magic pond. There were also some antisemitic stereotypes in the character design of the older witch, like the large nose and witch hat. I mean COME ON.
Three stars because the art really was amazing.
Eighteen years ago, a witch fled from ‘the lost ones’, clutching a baby ogre. The witch clan she returns to accepts that baby as one of their own, and raise her as a witch, naming her Temperance, and keeping to their own patch of the world, and avoiding a mysterious mist that tends to deaden everything it touches. But one day that mist breaks their wards, and so do the creatures that reign within, leading Temperance, and a handful of witches (and a humam!) to go on a quest to confront the mist, and those that live within it.
I really enjoyed this graphic novel, and I loved the art style - it felt alive and warm but also chilling and bleak when needed. I loved the description of how the witches used magic, and the variety and diversity within them.
The story engrossed me, and I was so sad when I came to the end of it, immediately wanting the next instalment so I could get more answers. However, I did feel quite teased over certain aspects of the story, and, while I love that there are things being held back for future instalments, I felt like there should of been a little more world building in this one.
But, overall, a super intriguing graphic novel, perfect for curling up with and reading in a sitting or two. I’m looking forward to reading whatever comes next.
Thank you to the publishers, and Netgalley, for the copy to review!
This was the perfect graphic novel to read in October! I loved the graphic style and colour palette. This graphic novel was very fun and cute but also had some dark pages. You see how much dedication and hard work went into creating this illustrations. (Swipe to get a little spoiler-free look into the book.)
The vibes and atmosphere were creepy and mystical filled with witches, magical creatures and a threatening mist and I can't wait for more volumes to come out!
Thank you to Stephané Fert, Europe Comics and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
This was a beautiful graphic novel. It was diverse. Which I greatly appreciate. I can’t wait to read the second one.
The illustrations for the Graphic Novel are so beautiful. I love the use of shapes and colours to tell the story. The body inclusivity was immaculate and I love that the author found a way to ground the magic of this world.
Too many times I've read books where witches use magic freely and all willy-nilly, but this book has rules and consequences for the use of magic and I LOVE that.
The only drawback about this story was that I believe this story is mainly about Temperance, but we heard more about her grandmother than about Temperance. She felt like a secondary character in her own story. But overall, I enjoyed reading this.
The Mist-Walker is a fun adventure/coming of age graphic novel. The artwork is unique and perfect for the story. The characters are diverse and funny. I can't wait to see what happens in the sequel.
Temperance is an ogre being raised in a witch village. She was found by one of the witches as a baby, who then brought her home to protect her from the mist. The mist is a black fog that engulfs everything in its path; after 18 years, it wants Temperance back. Temperance and the witches she considers family, now how to learn how to defeat the mist or die trying.
The art in this graphic novel is top notch! I really liked the characters, and will be eager to read the next volume when it comes out! How could you not after that huge cliff hanger?!
Thank you to NetGalley for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
This wasn't bad, but I didn't like how it ended. It was a bit convoluted and made little sense in sections but I still kinda enjoyed it up until the end. I think I really liked the art style despite the story.
This graphic novel had such a great storyline and the art style was amazing. I love the main idea of the book, which is the story of the ogre and making her way in the world. Also, I loved the body diversity we encounter through the story.
Didn't hold me enough to let me read it quickly. It was cute, and beautiful, but meh. I've no idea what audience I could pitch this to
A lovely tale about family and belonging with beautiful illustrations.
Thank you NetGalley for providing an ARC.
This was such an awesome graphic novel, I loved the illustrations, but the story was also really fun to read along.
This was an interesting story with really nice art and colouring. I liked the world created here but something stopped it from being a new favourite. Perhaps it was because I didn't feel connected to the characters as much as I would like. Would still recommand though!
Thank you Europe Comics and NetGalley for a copy of The Mist-Walker!
"One day, everything was lost in the mist. No, not those little morning wisps or the thin type that follows rain. The really dense stuff. A pea-souper, a dark fog, thick and black like atomized ink. A mist that engulfs everything. But the mist also left something behind: a mutant, an ogress—or perhaps just a little girl that a grouchy old witch would decide to call Temperance and who would be brought up in a quiet village by a group of contented old women. Then one day, the mist returns. It wants her back. Now it’s time for the witches to dust off their charms and try to remember their old incantations and kung fu techniques as they set out on a great adventure that will determine young Temperance’s destiny."
The art is absolutely gorgeous and whimsical! The story touches on identity, found family, and relationships -- I hope there's a second volume so it can explore the themes better. Overall, it's a great read for those looking for witchy books this fall!
The premise and art style of this book make it a fast and compelling read, but too many threads are started and left dangling by the last page to satisfy most readers. Enjoyable and atmospheric, but we'll see if there is a second volume.
This graphic novel was so cute!
There are themes of 'othering', 'community', 'celebrating womanhood', 'acceptance', 'finding your identity' and there are chaotic grannies and I LOVE chaotic grannies.
The art style is lovely and the characters have grown on my. I will definitely read more of Stéphane Fert's graphic novels, especially the sequels to this.
I highly recommend this for a witchy read.
Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Rating: 4/5
I received eARC for my honest opinion.
This was a cute, and very quick graphic novel. I loved the art; it was so beautiful, and I loved all the details in it. It was a perfect read for the spooky season, with all the witches, demons, ogresses, familiars and of course a deadly mist… what else could make it more perfect.
I liked the characters in the story, I didn’t have a hard time connecting or understanding the characters.
I can’t wait to see what Vol.2 will bring us because that cliffhanger will leave you wanting more and right away. I do feel like the ending of this GN was a little rushed, but I can see why it felt like that, with the cliffhanger and all.
I want to thank NetGalley and Europe Comics for the opportunity to review this Graphic Novel.
The fluctuating pacing and anti-semitic character designs made it difficult for me to immerse myself into the story. What stood out to me was having the antagonist be mist. The illustrations on the pages of the scenery were especially beautiful.
Thank you NetGallery and Europe Comics for the advanced reader copy. All opinions are my own.
Let's start with the artistry of this comic, which is undoubtedly the highlight of the entire experience. With breathtaking artwork, it features vibrant colours and a whimsical vibe that bursts from the pages. There's a fantastic range of body types and character designs. The creative team behind this comic has done an exceptional job in bringing the world to life, and it's a feast for the eyes.
However, regarding the narrative, I found myself less engaged. While the story has all the elements of a classic fantasy adventure, I struggled to fully connect with the characters and the unfolding events. The plot did not grab me as much as I had hoped, and the ending left me hanging on a major cliffhanger. I was left with mixed feelings, as it felt like the story lacked a certain depth.
There are meaningful themes explored, though. From the responsible use of power to the importance of community and feminism, the eternal battle between good and evil, the yearning for belonging, and the power of found family.
Despite these shortcomings, the comic offers a range of valuable messages and unique elements, making it a cute and whimsical read that, while not entirely memorable, is certainly worth exploring, especially for its striking visuals.
Thanks NetGalley and Europe Comics for access to this arc!
4.5/5 rounded up!
I really enjoyed this graphic novel. The storyline was engaging and intriguing, the art wad beautiful and so well done, and the characters were funny and relatable! The cliffhanger ending is a frustrating one - what do those things mean? Is she ok?? What's going to happen?! I hope volume 2 will come quickly!
