Temperance is found by a group of witches as an infant, raised under their tutelage, she goes on a journey to discover her own powers and who, or what, she actually is.
I really enjoyed the art in this book! It's very atmospheric and the color palette is perfect for October. I also found the dialogue and character dynamics really fun and, oftentimes, funny. Temperance is such a great main character - I feel like it's rare to get a female character who is larger and muscular and I really enjoyed that aspect!
I found this graphic novel slower than I expected. It took me a long time to get through it, even though I normally read graphic novels in one sitting. The more the world was revealed, the more interested I became, and without spoilers, I wasn't expecting the twist and found myself a hair disappointed.
I think this ended up not being the reading experience I fully wanted, but it wasn't a bad one.
Thank you to NetGalley and Europe Comics for providing me a copy of this book for an honest review.
This wasn't my cup of tea. it was a good story but from the beginning I found it very hard to get into the story. I would however like to read more from this author, maybe this just wasn't my book.
Witches, ogres and autumn vibes, perfect book for spooky season! The art is absolutely stunning, specially the forest backgrounds.
Really enjoyed the story too, and can't wait to read the next volume!
Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for a digital ARC in return for an honest review.
I am an avid graphic novel reader and the artwork really drew me in. I found the story not up my alley but still well done. The artist is really a standout for me here.
Lovely story with great art as well!
I loved the unique story with a few familiar ties to classic fairy tales.
My only complaint is that I found the font very difficult to read!
Very interesting story, very enjoyable quick read.
I really enjoyed the art as well. It was smooth and very moody.
I wish there was more stories in this universe.
Thanks so much to NETGALLEY for the eArc.
I loved this graphic novel! The art style is beautiful, I could stare at this work for hours it’s so stunning. I loved the story and need the next volume straight away! You instantly fall in love with all the characters especially
Temperance. I could picture it so clearly as a Netflix series along similar lines to ‘Hilda’.
A magical, powerful and exciting story with breathtaking art work? What’s more to love?
the amount of “wow’s” and “aaww’s” i had during reading and adoring what i saw is indefinite but big. rarely do i encounter a graphic novel that would be both interesting and beautiful. which i know. not a lot to ask. but here it was done in such a thoughtful way - including queerness, feminism. all you’d ever want.
i had to stop for minutes and minutes to stare and appreciate the work that’s been done to create these gorgeous illustrations. as well as laugh at the jokes.
AHHHHHHH. What can I say about this? I honestly don’t know. This entire story was so good and so cute and so sweet. The worldbuilding was fascinating, the characters were perfect, and I just loved all of this. god I’m going to have to read the next one.
I loved this comic. I have read this over a couple of days to properly appreciate the art, story and characters. I feel like this needs to be read slowly and enjoyed piece by piece because there are so many details that are so wonderfully created.
We are following an ogress (Temperance) who has been raised by witches. One day, the mist returns to the village and it seems to have a connection with Temperance. Now it’s time for the witches to dust off their charms and try to remember their old incantations and kung fu techniques as they set out on a great adventure that will determine young Temperance’s destiny. Very interesting world building and story, that makes you want to read more.
The relationships between the characters, the back stories and the character development is wonderful. I loved every single witch, human, creature that appears in the story. Even the enemy is interesting and it makes you ask a lot of questions (cannot wait for next volume).
The art is beautiful, the colors fit the story so well. Each setting has its own palette of colors and I think this is giving the plot a different dimension. Also, the way each character looks like works perfectly with their personality.
I highly recommend this book! It is absolutely incredible!
3.5 stars. I wasn’t super invested in the storyline tbh, but the art is super pretty. My favorite thing is the backgrounds. The coloring of them was beautiful, multicolored with gradients.
Thank you Netgalley for this arc.
I read The Mist-Walker in one sitting – the artwork was so lush and cozy but simultaneously dynamic and full of energy. I didn't expect it to be an adult graphic novel, but it was a pleasant surprise to see the odd curse word here and there and the representation of various female bodies, in age, race, size, and more, was lovely to see.
I did find the font for dialogue quite hard to read at times. But I would for sure recommend this one to friends interested in graphic novels and illustration.
I wish I read more bandes dessinées and had a greater sense of the landscape of this massive continent of the comics globe beyond the classics (Tintin, Asterix, Donjon, Satrapi, David B., etc.). This was my first encounter with young(er than me) artist-author Stéphane Fert, and I was thoroughly charmed. It’s my favourite sort of fantasy experience - an opening salvo that offers glimpses of layered world-building I can’t completely comprehend at this point. The action opens with a foggy landscape, clouds, streams, and trees weaving in and out of each other’s boundaries. A fairy tale landscape. It wasn’t until a second reading that I found the wreck of a modern van in the forest, a gothic trunk reaching up through its windshield like an accusing finger. A medieval mob is pursuing a woman and a swaddled baby. Violence ensues, and when she finally collapses beyond their reach, she’s surrounded by a coven of witches, wearing Halloween hats and smoking like Nouvelle Vague sirens, who debate what the baby is, and what manner of death it deserves. “It’s a girl,” the fleeing woman tells the witches, “She’s just a girl.”
When I say there are layers here, I mean there are interlocking populations who loathe each other: the witches’ coven and their ogress (surprise!) adoptee trying to fight back a demonic mist using only the repellent power of squash vines, the often monstrous local villagers who collaborate with the mist, the country folk who travel to get the witches’ aid for things like unwanted pregnancies, and the Gorges - a vast wasteland of broken skyscrapers where the mist holds sway. I eat the promise of these glimpses up.
But the layers are also visual, and this is what has haunted me about Fert’s work - its strikingly moody watercolour style, shifting its colour palette slowly from scene to scene, sometimes evoking the art deco grandeur of period National Parks posters, sometimes expressionistic horror, sometimes psychedelic swirls, sometimes the glimmering light of Impressionism. Fert is a confident manipulator of pace and place, allowing us to sink slowly into the mood of this otherworld that seems to have sprung, mushroomlike, in the remains of our own.
This was so good omg
The charming art, the interesting and easy to follow plot, the masterfully written quotes and the female solidarity (and lesbianism) between the witches? Top notch.
The humourous moments were also balanced out super well with the more serious ones making this a great comfort read for fall/winter time.
I loved this and will absolutely be continuing the series.
I really enjoyed The Mist-Walker. I’ve thought the story was great and I loved the art style. I hope that there will be more to come!
Thank you to NetGalley and Europe Comics for this e-book!
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this and also sad that its only volume one because I need to know what happens next. This story follows an ogre girl named Temperance that lives in a witches community with her grandmother. There is this mist that can envelop people and turn them into monsters. Temperance has an attachment to the mist and isn't sure why that is. This volume starts the journey of Temperance figuring out how to stop the mist and save her witch family. This was a fun read for me since I enjoy witch content and I got attached to the characters and their respective journeys. I will definitely be continuing the series and recommend checking it out!
Temperance knows the mist can drive anyone mad and turn them into a monster. Over one hundred years ago, the mist came and destroyed civilization, leaving the humans, the Lost Ones, and the witches, the outsiders, with competing ideas for the future. Her grandmother, one witch among many in their small village, has created a way to keep the mist at bay and they all live a relatively normal happy life. They try to coexist with the mist, while the Lost Ones seem to be fighting it, to no avail. When her grandmother’s spells fail one day, the mist attacks. Temperance runs in after one her aunties, lost in the darkness, and instead finds her destiny. The Mist-Walker follows Temperance and her grandmother, a few of her braver aunties, and a very cute Lost One as they make a far-fetched journey to end the mist - the very journey Temperance’s grandmother set out on generations ago from which she returned, mist still intact, with Temperance - a part ogre child she bid the witches help her hide from the Lost Ones.
I have yet to read a Europe comic I haven’t liked, they seem to have impeccable taste for the works they take on, from a wide range of genres and art styles. This comic was beautiful. Character design was varied and complimented the art style. The story was well fleshed out, with plenty of cinematic cells to really set the mood and just the right amount of gaps in world building to wonder on for the next installment.
I loved this so much!!! EVERYTHING was fantastic from beginning to end, it was fascinating and pulled the reader in from the very beginning. I LOVED it!!!
This was a delight! I loved the artwork of this, as well as the story, characters and humour, so this ticked all of my boxes.
Spent my day off baking bread, cuddling my pets, watering the garden, and reading this graphic novel I just got my hands on. My tired body and mind relished spending time in the forest with ogres and witches.
"The Mist-Walker" is a beautiful and imaginative fantasy graphic novel which throws us into the woods of a dystopian future.
I could really imagine this story as a Pixar film, and while the story feels a bit simple, I like the whimsical characters and can't wait to find out what happens next.
I wish the plot slowed down a little, so I could immerse myself fully in the world, with all the cozy cottages and dark forests. So many graphic novels (and novels) are in such a hurry to get to the "story" and I just want more time, more world building, more character development.
Overall this graphic novel is a joy and highly recommended. I look forward to future chapters!
