What would you do when you feel that you have met the one person you should be with? Never having spoken but head over heels in love.
Do you change your life and theirs to become each others destiny? Will it live up to your musings?
Not what you expect from a second wedding, the disapperance of the first wife unquestioned apart from the stranger at the wedding.
Who are they and why are they asking questions?
Thank you to the author, publisher and netgalley for an arc of this book. Although I didn't really warm to either of the main characters I still found it an enjoyable read. The Stranger at the Wedding is a slow burning thriller that is easy to read. There are a few twists along the way setting the scene for a satisfying reveal. I will be on the lookout for more from this author.
This was a book of contradictions for me. I nearly gave it up after the first chapter as I just couldn’t get into it, then I got much more invested in it, then quite frankly I got well confused! Half the time I didn’t seem to know where I was with the timeline and the characters. Sadly I didn’t bond with either character but I did read to the end just to find out what happened, but it was rather weird.
Mixed feelings about this one - such a shame as the blurb was so good!
Annie and Mark are about to get wed. Annie never believed in love at first sight until she caught a glimpse of Mark; it took several months to meet him for real, but here they are on the cusp on married life. They have both had a taste of tragedy and that has had an impact on their relationship but they're ready to leave all that in the past; however not everyone in attendance has best wishes in mind . . .
I struggled with this one. The story wasn't easy to follow, partly because it chopped and changed narrator without any warning and several times I had to go back and re-read to work out what was going on and who was talking and, while that was frustrating it wasn't the only thing. The typeface used - and I struggle to understand why any publisher would use this strange font for any book - was not of the usual acceptable type and just added to my exasperation. It would have been easy to give up, but I'm not a quitter and continued onto the bitter end, finding no improvement but increased annoyance. While I tried not to let the decision of which typeface to go with affect my rating, there is no doubt that it took away from the writing. For me, three stars.
My thanks to the publisher for my copy via NetGalley; this is - as always - my honest, original and unbiased review.
I really liked this one. With its complex characters and gripping plot twists, this kept me guessing until the very end, questioning everything i thought i knew about trust and betrayal. Great ending and one not to be missed.

Annie never believed in true love. Not until she caught sight of Mark on a crowded commuter train. It wasn’t until months later that they finally had their picture-perfect first date and after a whirlwind romance, they are now about to tie the knot. Both Annie and Mark have suffered tragedy – their shared experience of sorrow has brought them together, but at times the pressure of those losses has also threatened their happiness. Today they will leave all of that in the past, and forge a new life. But not everyone gathered here has come to toast the new couple. And Annie quickly realises that her new life isn’t going to be the happily ever after she had planned.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bloomsbury Publishing for giving me an advance copy.
I sat mesmerized by the story and could not stop reading until I had finished the book! Every single detail is realistically and vividly brought out that will leave you feeling like you already know these characters. Plus, the climax was brilliant too.
After reading advance praise for The Stranger at the Wedding I thrilled to have the opportunity to read it.
I didn’t find this an easy read as the style of writing just did not flow for me. I found it disjointed and so it was difficult to become involved in the storyline. I wasn’t drawn to any of the characters and the plot fell flat for me.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this digital ARC.
2.5 stars
This book has an interesting premise- the disappearance of a wife and the husband seeming not to care and driving forward a new relationship within months.
For the most part the book delivers on the intrigue and the cast of characters certainly lends itself to the twists the book offers. However none of the characters were stand out enough for me to want to root for them and the further into the book I got the harder I found it to suspend disbelief at the lead up to the final twist.
This thriller has twists and turns right up into the very end! But saying that it is an easy read, I sad and read it happily in an afternoon!
This is a book which kept me guessing right up until the end. Annie did seem a little too good to be true and was it a coincidence that she managed to met up with her man on the train.
Things are not always as they seem and the author kept the suspense going as to how things would turn out and who was the good guy and who was the baddie.
A good read and didn't see the end coming.
Unfortunately this book just wasn't for me.
I didn't particularly like any of the characters and this made it a bit of a chore to read. It's not a bad story, just unlikable characters.
I'm sorry to say that I didn't really enjoy this book. The storyline sounded intriguing but the style of writing just didn't appeal to me and I didn't really like the characters. Thanks to NetGalley for a preview copy.
Copied to Goodreads.
My first book by this author, I did enjoy the story, a tale of a man whose wife supposedly left him without a trace - did she run off, did she die? He meets a new woman and they hit it off and soon marry. Their marriage seems to revolve around what happened to the previous wife. The stranger at the wedding - a private investigator attempts to find out what indeed did happen. I feel the story began really well however I felt that the ending was a bit lacking - I wanted to know more. I loved the references to the historical myths and felt these tied in well especially the ones on Pandora’s box. Overall a good quick read but it did leave me wanting more.
Unfortunately this was not for me. I assume if you were into this kind of thriller genre then the twists and turns and ultimate denouement would be right up your street. I however found the storyline quite contrived and somewhat unbelievable. The characters were unlikeable and I found I was just hoping to get to the end.
Wow! This book is a whole new level of messed up, you think you have a handle on it but how wrong you can be....
Thoroughly enjoyed it!
Annie is marrying Mark, a man she first spotted on a train and met outside her therapy session - does she really know him, and what happened to his first wife Hope? Does Mark know Annie and the secret she is hiding? We follow the narratives of Annie, Hope and Cameron who is trying to discover the truth...someone is lying. This thriller of damaged and damaging people draws you in and keeps you gripped to the last page. I highly recommend it.
I enjoyed this twisty tale of Annie and Marks wedding and the stranger that appears and ruffles a few feathers. The story then goes backwards and forwards to explain past events and how they got together. I was intrigued from the start and it didn't take me long to get to the end. And what an ending. I really did not see that twist coming. Highly recommended.
2024 52 Book Challenge - 10) Told In Non Chronological Order
I quite enjoyed this book. I didn't find either Annie or Mark likable characters, but the mystery and the plot kept me intrigued in the book. I quite liked the chapters that were from Cameron's perspective, and how he pieced it all together. I also really liked the mythology references that were scattered through the book.
I will say that the grammar in this book was atrocious. There were a lot of errors, but as this is a ARC copy, I think that the vast majority of this will be solved before the final publication.
I found it a bit strange at the beginning - I couldn't understand why the bride was so worried to see a stranger at her wedding. I still find it a bit of an overreaction to be honest. But as I got further into it, I really began to enjoy it and I wasn't expecting the ending to be the way it was at all. It took me throughly by surprise. So a bit of a slow burn but ultimately very enjoyable.
