I really enjoyed this book. Self-care is quickly becoming something that we all are being encouraged to engage in, and I feel it's vital for mental and spiritual health.
I appreciate that the author is trained in mental health and that there is a great balance between real world and magical ways to approach self-care.
I listened to the audio version of this book, and while I liked it, I would suggest getting a physical copy. You are going to want to go back and reference previous pages, trust me!
This was an interesting listen that well combines an introduction to Wicca with self care guidance critical to mental health. I know very little relating to Wicca and found this shared enough to make me more interested in the subject and research further. The spells were simple and combined well with the self care rituals.
The audio book was well narrated and easy to follow.
I'll definitely be picking up a physical copy for my sister who would love this!
Marie Bruce is a psychotherapist and a witch. You should not think that these are separate things.
This isn't the start of a joke - a psychotherapist and a witch didn't walk into a bar - but it's a good enough place to start.
'The Wiccan Guide to Self-Care: A Witch's Approach to Healing Yourself' is an interesting read. It's written by a qualified psychotherapist and practicing Wiccan.
The book gives readers the tools to improve their mental health using Wicca. It presents various Wiccan practices in a clear and practical way. It suggests simple ways to enhance your mental and physical wellbeing. It's an eclectic mix of self-care techniques and psychological insights.
Sometimes it feels more like a mental healthcare professional wrote it than a witch but it is what it is.
The book walks a tightrope between the clinical and the mystical. It doesn't falter, though sometimes it wobbles, and it doesn't look down.
Wicca and psychotherapy have an interesting dynamic throughout the book. They make for strange bedfellows at first blush. The relationship is problematic but they've more in common than you might think.
Wicca can help you to meet life's challenges by reframing them.
Wicca is a positive and nurturing framework by which to navigate. You're encouraged to connect with the divine and live in harmony with the natural world. You're also encouraged to adopt a positive approach to all aspects of your life.
It's a way to meet life on its own terms while furthering your personal and spiritual growth.
The book shows you how to use Wiccan principles in your everyday life. It provides simple rituals and practices to improve your mental and physical health. This includes meditation, spell work, dream incubation, and working with the elements.
The rituals and practices will support you regardless of what life throws at you or puts in your path.
The book is a handy guide to help you feel better in any situation. You can improve your sleep, diet, exercise, work, productivity, outlook, and mental health. It's a thought-provoking read if nothing else. Even if it does lean more towards the therapeutic than the witchy.
Then again, I've always been more interested in the magical than the mundane.
I enjoyed the combination of Wiccan practices and psychological insights. It's a refreshing spin on the usual self-care advice you find in the self-help section. It's a gentle introduction to self-care. Though it might not contain anything new or unfamiliar to seasoned witches.
The Wiccan Guide to Self-Care is more clinical in tone than you might expect from a witch.
I wanted the book to take a Wiccan approach to psychotherapy rather than the reverse. A Wiccan take on psychotherapy, say, rather than a therapeutic take on Wicca. Instead, it takes a clinical approach and focuses on that. It doesn't dive into Wicca's roots, history, or significance. It doesn't even do a great job of explaining what Wicca is.
I'd hoped for a deeper exploration of Magick and Witchcraft.
Wicca is a modern form of Paganism. Witchcraft is a practice. You can't use these terms interchangeably as though they mean the exact same thing. Nothing about Wicca or Witchcraft is wishy washy, woo woo, or new age. Magick is a powerful vehicle for self-empowerment and personal development.
The book takes a bright and breezy approach to self-care.
It's all a bit too fluffy for my tastes - though friends often tell me that they suspect I'm secretly fluffy. To me self-care isn't about bubble baths, face masks, and aromatherapy. It isn' t a catch-all term for doing pleasant things and being nice to yourself. It's about doing the work.
So, what's your poison?
If you want a gentle blend of Wiccan wisdom and mental health care, this book is for you. It will help you to feel better and treat yourself with kindness. And that's no bad thing. But if you want something stronger then go to the source. Read some foundational texts about Wicca and Witchcraft.
You can still have a bubble bath afterwards if you want.
So this was such a great read. I learnt soooo many little changes that are going to make my life and head sooo much better!
I have always wanted to read more about Wicca and self care so this book was a perfect mix of the two.
The narration was excellent, not narrated by the author but thats ok, sometimes the author reading thier own work just gives a little something to the feeling of it, but having said that Gabrielle Glaister did an excellent job.
I am still working out if i am more interested in Paganism rather than Wicca, so if you are like me and still undecided, this book is still worth a read.
This book deals with such a varied amount of subjects from realtionships to grief and trauma with everythign else in between, there are 'spells' or intentions as i like to call them and rituals you can follow if you wish to.
I did find that some of the self care advice in here was, to my mind, more common sense or generalised advice, there is still enough 'wicca' in to keep me reading more.
Thanks to Netgalley and Arcturus Digital Audio for the ability to listen for review.
I listen to this book while working and it was a great distraction.
The narrator, the writer herself, has a good calming voice, which made it really easy to understand even without focusing on it.
It was entertaining and I learned a lot of things. Great way to start your journey about wicca.
A really interesting read, focusing on the age old traditions from the Wiccan world. Some super ideas to help you start looking after yourself more. Loved the style and the many varied suggestions.
This was absolutely incredible, as far as self help books.. I’ve read them all. Not one of this nature though, still completely in reality with the added touch of magic and hope for a better future for yourself. More people read this, and not be out off the guise of Wiccan magic as this could be a fundamental tool to improve your life experience!
Highly recommend, would absolutely buy and definitely follow.
I have read self-help books. I have read books on spirituality. But this is my first book that has both elements, and it’s backed up by the science of psychology.
The psychological part of it makes the reader think and reflect on patterns, behaviours and current life. As a psychology student myself, I can see elements that are backed up by research that I have been studying in my degree. The holistic approach is brought by the spells and the magic definitions Marie adds to the book.
I found very useful both sides of the book and I liked how she has put them together to bring a self-help guide.
Some quotes that truly stuck with me:
‘It is during your most difficult times that you are being moved up to the next level of life’.
‘What do you excuses say about you? What can you do to make positive changes in this area?’
Yes at this book and everything about it! It was brilliant and written so well. It was perfectly balanced in its advice, actions you can take, things you implement and reassuring little tidbits. The more you read, the more you start to understand yourself and what you can bring in to your life.
I loves the psychology element to this book and the perspective the author, who is a psychotherapist, can give us. It’s written without everything witchy woo-woo (I love it but it’s not for everyone) and it can be read without any of the Wiccan element. Everyone is welcome here! There is some fab ‘witchy tips’ for you though and I loved how you could take exactly what you wanted from it.
It has some really great advice and information and I not only learnt a lot and took on board a whole lot of different things, but I learnt a lot about how I might help others and identify struggles in others. I’ve always been one who has been ‘on it’ with my self care and I’m in tune with what I need to do to bring myself back to myself and there was still plenty for me to learn! I couldn’t relate to a lot of things in this book, as it turns out I’m a lot more well balanced than I thought I was! but it’s also a book you can read to help you understand the people around you and those you love.
I can’t express how greatly written the book was and it’s one you can read in every format. I read the ebook alongside the audiobook and it was a perfect format. A physical copy would be number one, ebook was also great and audiobook would be a great format for those who want to listen to the advice if they couldn’t muster the energy or have the time to read.
The audiobook was greatly narrated and the reader was a perfect choice for this. It was easy to ‘tune in’ and flick in and out of and I loved listening to the audio whilst reading the ebook. A great book to come back to and one to have on your shelf if self help books are for you!
Audiobooks are so brilliant that I genuinely rarely feel that I have missed out in anyway from being able to. read the hard copy. That’s my only complaint and it’s neither the book the narrator the author nor the publishers fault. I’d have like to be able to keep it and refer to it bible like. However I cannot, and that’s ok. I have some crystals and sages and I’d really like to be shown how to use them properly, so the advice was really great. I found it to be interesting intriguing informative uplifting and thought provoking. Could make a Wiccan out of this reader! Fantastic! All the stars 🌟 loads of tips and affirmations, like a beginner’s guide.
Thank you to NetGalley and Arcturus digital audio for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook in return for an honest review.
**Listened to the audiobook**
Firstly, I loved the choice of narrator. She had a real warmth and calmness about her. Perfect choice for this book.
I enjoyed listening to this book, however I think this book doesn't really work as an audiobook.
There are a lot of instructions and personally I would have preferred to read a hardcopy if I was going to take part in the activities for self care.
Overall this is a really interesting book and i loved the concept - but I think I would have got more out of it if it had it been a hard copy rather than audio.
