The GOLDEN hour, sert in the late 1890's is a curiously interesting and exciting story of a changing world.
A story where characters are cautiously flexing their interests and desires in a world still rife with vigilants, prudes and hypocrites. There's a simple beauty and love underneath the fear, caution and even the sheer boldness of the lead women in story
A thoroughly enjoyable book set in the 1890s in Brighton. Jacquie's descriptions transport the reader to a different era without making it seem as though it's in the past. Fabulously strong characters which developed wonderfully throughout the book and who were easy to imagine. I think it reminds the readers of today just how much life has changed, particularly for women in the last 130 years and make us grateful that it has. I enjoyed the French House but this is even better.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end, It was really hard to put down I was so caught up with the story. I loved the characters particularly the twins Ellen and Reynold, Clementine and young Lily. The setting in Victorian seaside Brighton was very atmospheric and almost sinister at times. It was dreadful reading about Clementine being sectioned by her dreadful husband. A story of love and true friendship and Ellen realising that she had a true friend right in front of her. Wonderful read.
The Golden Hour by Jacquie Bloese
A very different take on this often written about as a more genteel era.
Ellen & Reynold Harper are twins and their business in Brighton is photography , families , modestly posed couples , and pretty children , a respectable way of making a living.
However , once the day is over they switch their clientele to a completely different market , the seedy , more shocking , often seen as pornographic , passed under the table photograph .
A brilliant plot and great characters go into making this book a great read.
I loved everything about this book. The storyline grips you from the start and the characters are very strong. It is very well written and I'd love to read more by this writer. Highly recommended.
