Devoured it. Loved it. Bereft I’ve finished it. Unsure how I will wait a whole year until the next.
A Stranger In The Family is a perfect continuation of the Maeve Kerrigan series. True to form in its pace, tension, and intrigue, the story kept me clinging to the pages and desperate for more. Full of uncertainty and twists, Maeve 11 is sure to be another favourite in this fantastic series!
About to reread books 8 through 11 all over again (not for the first time) to film the void.

A Stranger in the Family by Jane Casey

Another great book by one of my favourite crime authors , you know your in for a great when you get a copy of her book in your hand.
A brilliant character is Maeve , and whilst she has been in many of the authors books , I never tire of her .
This time she and her team are called to investigate a family in turmoil and their daughter Rosalie has been reported missing.
As we delve deeper we realise things are not quite as they seem and the Family have many secrets to hide.

Rosalie disappeared 16 years ago and no trace of her has ever been found.
Now, Maeve & Josh get called to a murder/suicide - the parents of Rosalie, but nothing is as it seems.

While this hasn't been my favourite in the series it was a very smart thriller, going between present day and flashbacks to the run up to Rosalie's disappearance, giving the reader insight that the protagonists don't. While I figured out one part of the mystery, I didn't see the final twist coming.

And as for that epilogue? Well Jane knows how to keep us hanging!

Very much looking forward to Maeve Kerrigan #12

I had A Stranger in the Family on preorder as soon as I knew about it as I read all of the Maeve Kerrigan series last year and was addicted! As soon as I started this ARC of A Stranger in the Family I was hooked and could not put it down. Jane Casey is the master of police procedural. She builds a complicated case whilst also ensuring there are not too many red herrings or that the ultimate perpetrator is not completely implausible. But ultimately this is the Josh and Maeve show and my only criticism is that whereas that worked brilliantly in The Close because of the plot, it felt to the detriment of the other characters in this one. Fans of the series will know enough about Liv and Georgia and Colin and Una to fill in the holes themselves, but I feel in earlier books the whole team were fleshed out more. The chemistry between Josh and Maeve is incredible. I am bereft that I have finished A Stranger in the Family. In the acknowledgements Jane Casey says we won’t have to wait too long until the next instalment of the series….but what does that even mean? I need it now. 5🌟

I’m a longtime fan of Jane Casey and have really enjoyed seeing the character of Maeve Kerrigan evolve. In this latest novel, the relationship between her and Josh Derwent really takes centre stage leaving the mystery to sometimes feel a little underdeveloped which is disappointing. However, the developing attraction between Maeve and Josh is beautifully written, if sometimes a little frustrating. Slow burn is too fast to describe these 2!
I really enjoyed this story but felt a little let down by the cliffhanger, introduced in the final sentence of the epilogue. I would have thought Jane Casey had a big enough guaranteed fan base to not need to resort to a slightly cheap technique.
Overall I can’t wait for the next story in this series

I love Jane Casey books and I was delighted to get the opportunity to review the newest Maeve Kerrigan book. I loved the plot of the story and I was gripped from start to finish! I can’t wait to read more from the author in the future!

Jane Casey is one of the best crime writers around and a Strange in the Family is no different. Maeve and the team are investigating the murder/suicide of the Marshalls, whose daughter Rosalie went missing as a child, but things aren’t all they seem. Jane’s plotting and story telling has always been masterful, it keeps me coming back to her books time after time.

Finishing this book left me with so many emotions, the main one being when is the next one out!!

Many thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for the ARC

Where to begin? Another breathtaking challenge for Maeve and Josh. Rosalie is nine when she is taken one night from her home from her bed. The police investigation doesn't find her and her mother Helena and father Bruce use their money to suppress stories which may come out in the papers and place gagging orders on them in order to not report on the case. Rosalie 's brother's Magnus and Ivo grow further apart! Their mother tries to commit suicide and ends up being cared for by Bruce who's health also deteriorates. Fast forward nineteen years and Helena and Bruce are found dead in their apartment - a far cry from the mansion they used to have! It looks like a straight forward murder suicide but nothing is straight forward when Maeve and Josh are on the case. Just what happened all those years ago and is it somehow connected? Will they ever find Rosalie and just who took her and why? How many secrets does one family have?

Love Jane Casey 's books and this is no exception. Highly recommend can't wait for the next instalment!!! Would give more than five, stars if I could!!

Nice.
When nine-year-old Rosalie Marshall vanished from her bed one summer night, her disappearance tore her family apart.
Now, sixteen years later, her mother Helena is found dead, her husband by her side. It looks like a straightforward murder-suicide but DS Maeve Kerrigan and DI Josh Derwent soon discover nothing about this case is straightforward. The Marshalls have been keeping secrets. And someone is prepared to kill to hide the truth. Until Maeve finds out what happened to Rosalie, no one will be safe .
Thanks to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK Harper Fiction for giving me an advance copy.

This is yet another top class Jane Casey book featuring (for the 11th time!) DS Maeve Kerrigan and DI Josh Derwent this time investigating the disappearance of a nine year old Rosalie Marshall who vanished from her bed one summer and was never seen again. We move to 16 years later, as the detectives find Rosalie's mother and father dead in their apartment.

There are just enough timeline switches from the past to the present to try and explain the family dynamic with Rosalie's two brothers possibly involved. Ms Casey is so good at bringing in other characters/red herrings all to an exciting ending. Ms Casey must also have a team exploring remote locations UK which actually add to the story

As for the Maeve/Josh personal stuff, this is left hanging - thanks goodness!

Thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins UK for the chance to read and review.

'A Stranger in the Family' is the third novel I've read by Jane Casey and this one, like the others, is a great read. A compelling story, great characters and... well, so much sexual tension between DS Maeve Kerrigan and DI Josh Derwent! Highly recommended.

This is the latest in Jane Casey's marvellous London based crime series featuring DS Maeve Kerrigan and DI Josh Derwent. This is the most twisty and darkest of additions to the series, although those familiar with the series will know that it is so much more than about the mystery, dominating is the long developing, complex relationship between Maeve and Josh, the chemistry between them sizzles, not to mention that the pair make for a remarkable investigative team. Yet Josh's quagmire of a relationship with Melissa, and particularly with his love for her son, Thomas, provides a obstacle ridden, stressful and messy meandering path for him and Maeve to work through, all of which is to end up in a concerning and most intriguing of cliffhangers.

Maeve and josh find themselves in what appears to be a murder-suicide scene at the London flat of Helena Marshall, who requires round the clock care, and her older husband, Bruce. It soon becomes clear it is a case of a double murder, and it seems logical for the investigation that follows to take into account what happened 16 years ago, when the Marshalls 9 year old daughter, Rosalie, disappeared. The police never solved the case, in the house at the time were the Marshalls, their two sons, 14 year old Ivo, and 12 year old Magnus, and as the police team, which includes Liv, having all the responsibilities of a young child to shoulder, and Georgia, dig deep in the hunt for a killer, finding suspects and uncovering secrets that had never come to light in the original police inquiries.

Fans of the author will devour this latest offering from Casey, she has a huge following, all of us who cannot but be mesmerised by Kerrigan and Derwent and the developments between them, avidly followed too by Liv, Georgia, and their boss, Una, all of whom have firm and strong opinions on them. The central mystery is well plotted and a demanding challenge that takes the team all over the place and that requires carefully untangling before the truth begins to emerge, yet somehow it becomes secondary for the more human interest thread of Maeve and Josh. A brilliant read. I look forward with great anticipation to the next in the series. Many thanks to the publisher for an ARC.

I feel embarrassed to admit it, but I was unaware of Jane Casey, Maeve, Josh and the rest of the gang. So when I realised this book was one of a series, and would involve getting to know a new set of, very probably, dysfunctional police officers with back stories all other readers knew, my heart sank and I kept putting off reading it. How wrong could I be! I loved the book and Ms Casey's empathic story telling and believable characters made it a joy to read. A clever mystery unfolds and, although I have to admit to getting a bit fed up with the "will they, won't they scenario with Josh and Maeve, Ms Casey has a new fan and I can't wait for the next book
Thank you to netgalley and Harper Collins for an advance copy of this book.

I hadn't read any of the previous book but omg , I cang believe I've been missing out on such an amazing series. Where to even start?! This had me so invested from the start. I loved that there was constantly things happening and more and more being uncovered. The characters are all well written and humanised. They're like real 3d people so it's easy to picture it all playing out and to really become invested in the investigation. This has to be one of the best police procedural I've come across in a long time. Can't wait to go back to the start and really get lost in this amazing series

A brilliant police procedural as always (No 11 in the series) There is also the inclusion of the simmering tension between Maeve and Josh which has been growing stronger, particularly in the last book The Close’.
This plot is particularly complex and compelling, starting with the discovery of a murder/suicide of an older couple which Maeve realises is just a murder. It then crosses into cold case territory, as the couple had a daughter who disappeared and was never found. It is all crafted together beautifully and seamlessly as the family come under the spotlight to a tension filled denouement. I cannot recommend it highly enough..

When 9 year old Rosalie Marshall disappears without trace from her home in the early hours, her family’s life is turned upside down. Now, 16 years later, the bodies of her parents have been found, an apparent murder/suicide. Maeve Kerrigan and Josh Derwent are on the case, and quickly discover clues that suggest all is not as it seems- and must surely be connected to what happened to their daughter all those years ago. Although this is book 11 in the series, it can easily be read alone- my first read was the previous one, and I was immediately hooked. The plot is twisty and the uncovering of evidence and clues unfolds intriguingly, keeping the reader guessing. There are several possible suspects, and Casey fleshes them out so they seem like real people with their own strengths and weaknesses. The simmering romantic tension between Josh and Maeve which really grew in the previous book, when they played a couple together undercover, is explored further here, and like the central story is complex but riveting. Maeve is a compassionate lead, and the novel is that rare combination- a thrilling and intelligent crime procedural and a poignant narrative about toxic families, the psychological effects of childhood trauma and the search for love. It ends on a cliffhanger that will torture me, although Jane Casey promises that she will deal with this soon in the next book in the series. I can’t wait- hurry up, Jane!

I waited over two weeks to finally write this review and yet it still feels impossible to do the book justice. In fact, I want justice for the emotional rollercoaster Jane Casey has sent me on. I have been shifting between agony and joy ever since, and I can only say that a book that can make you feel so much is worth everything.
‘A Stranger in the Family’ is the 11th instalment in the addictive DS Maeve Kerrigan series, written by Jane Casey. And I have been completely and utterly taken by this series for 7 years now. These are my favourite books and for good reason. Not only is the plot always so complex, suspenseful and thrilling that I can never figure out the mystery until the pieces come perfectly together, but the relationships between characters feel so real that the fantasy becomes a reality. It is truly rare that a book series improves with each new release, but, as always, Jane has blown me away with her talent to do just that.

Onto the book itself. Helena and Bruce Marshall are found dead in their flat in what appeared to be a clear-cut murder-suicide. And yet, it soon becomes apparent that clear-cut is far from it. Helena and Bruce Marshall were parents of Rosalie, a young girl who disappeared one night without a trace, and the lines between the two cases become blurred very quickly. The investigation ended up being the darkest and most thrilling one so far. There were a lot more jumps in perspective between Maeve and the key players in the case itself than usual. And while that is something that I typically wouldn’t like, I can confidently say that it was a phenomenal choice for this particular story. I honestly don’t think I have ever been so suspicious of every single character when compared to previous novels, and the perspective changes played a part in that.
The mystery was so good throughout that I couldn’t put the book down for wanting to know if my own, new whodunnit theories were right (they rarely were). I won’t say more about the case itself to avoid spoilers, as every piece of information plays a part in the end.

And now… for what I shamelessly fell in love with more than the mystery itself… MOSH (or Maeve Kerrigan and Josh Derwent). My heart has been torn out of my chest, thrown on the floor, stepped on (repeatedly), ripped into shreds, glued back together, returned to my body, then cut out again and thrown into general waste. If you’re here for the sizzling hot, glowing devotion between our two favourite detectives, strap yourself in, this is a rough one. I have never been more desperate for the next instalment. Not only do Maeve and Josh make the perfect crime solving duo, but they also make the perfect duo in every other sense. I could provide a Ted Talk on the matter. The title would be ‘Perfection’ and the description would be ‘How-to-land-your-readers-in-therapy’.
Jane Casey masterfully weaves their relationship into the case. As said before, her storytelling feels so authentic that it is truly one-in-a-million. The only thing that I can fault is how prolonged their will-they-won’t-they has become. Although their tension was genuinely palpable, all the complications and back-and-forth was emotionally draining and dissatisfying. But regardless, for all those who love Maeve and Josh, you’re in for a real treat. You will remember this one for years to come. And even if you are just a crime fiction enthusiast, the personal relationships between all the characters, not just Maeve and Josh, make their own wonderful mysteries. As for the infamous, teased cliffhanger: I have been in agony ever since, it made me genuinely nauseous, I’m still in shock.

That’s all I’ll say about the book, as this is not a novel you’d want spoiled for yourself. Every sentence grips you more than the last and I am counting the days until Maeve #12.

I truly believe that anyone who is even remotely interested in crime fiction needs to read this book, and each Maeve Kerrigan book prior. Jane Casey’s writing is just so unique. It’s a real privilege to read.

Thank you so much and HarperCollinsUK, HarperFiction and NetGalley for an ARC copy of this book in exchange for a review!

This is the first Maeve and Josh book iv read in the series and maybe I should have read the series first to know the back story of their relationship. But this said I did enjoy the story, lots of twists and turns to keep you going throughout the book with a bit of a shock cliff-hanger at the end. Il def be reading more in this series and Id like to thank the publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this early copy.

Another excellent read from Jane Casey based on the DS Kerrigan and DI Derwent series. I couldn't put this book down and would recommend this as a must crime/thriller to read.
