I will not be writing a full review for this as I try not to write negative reviews, I've read and enjoyed other books by Stuart Turton but for some reason this one just didn't gel, not sure why but I really didn't like it so I'd rather not write something negative as I get its my opinion, and I'm not even sure 100% why I didn't like it!

I’ve read all of Stuart’s books, and loved them all so I was excited to pick you his latest. It’s classic Stuart to be honest, dark, emotionally charged, and a gripping story.

This time we are on an island…with a deadly fog cutting the inhabitants from the rest of the world- if it exists that is - they believe the fog to have killed the rest of the world.

As the title says - there is a murder - but who did it and why? This island has a lot of secrets…

Another great book from Stuart!

My thanks to Netgalley and Bloomsbury Publishing Plc (UK & ANZ) for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Unfortunately, this book wasn't for me. I was bored throughout and just didn't care at all about the characters or the mystery. It was too long, uninteresting and unfortunately not a book I'd recommend.

Very cleverly written, it didn’t disappoint.

Thank you NetGalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest review.

This book.. just like his others are intriguing. You literally aren’t sure where it’s heading until you’re there. I love the clever writing, slowly unfolding plot. Perfection!

I was drawn to the cover and title of this book (I know you shouldn’t be and shouldn’t admit it but I was). That can be fatal because some books don’t live up to the expectation, but that wasn’t the case here.. I loved the idea- that it was dystopian and a whodunnit. A genre mash up I didn’t know we needed. I want more books set in this world- one that’s not too far from what might be reality one day but also completely different from the present. I’m eager for this to be adapted for the screen (if they can do it justice).

A mix of dystopia, sci-fi, horror, and thriller. A story that kept me hooked and on the edge. A post-apocalyptic setting that could be heaven but turns into a nightmare.
A plot that is base on the time running away and the risk of losing their self and their memory.
It’s not my favorite Turton’s novel but he’s an excellent storyteller and I appreciated the world building.
A bit slow at times but intriguing.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine

Having read and loved The Devil and the Dark water, I was intrigued to pick up Stuart Turton's latest offering.
As the summary suggests, it is definitely a unique concept and something different. But while it was inventive, I just found myself not caring a huge amount the characters and as a result of that, the murder mystery did not grip me. I think it needs a bit more connection to the characters, and the plot at times felt too complex to understand why certain things were clues. I would still give this a 3 star rating as it does have a great post-apocalyptic atmosphere and when it does speed up it keeps you reading up until the end.
Thank you to the publishers & NetGalley for an eARC copy of this book.

I absolutely loved this book!
I loved both of this author’s previous books so I was super excited to read this one and it 100% didn’t disappoint.
Stuart Turton really does know how to create an enveloping atmosphere that sucks you in and keeps you engage page by page. I can’t wait to read whatever he writes next!

This was the book that really got me back into reading after my “I had 2 babies and lockdown happened” slump. The synopsis describes it as a puzzle where there is a murder to be solved on an idyllic (we all know it’s not going to be!) island where the last remaining members of humanity live surrounded by the deadly fog that wiped everyone else out. But there are a couple of catches too: the murder has triggered something which is allowing the fog to creep in, so they’re on a time limit to solve it; and everyone has had their memories wiped.

I knew right away that this was a perfect book for me, blending a murder mystery into a dystopian future, with a bit of isolation and survival thrown in for good measure. It was a slow pace at the beginning and the actual event (the murder) which is promised in the blurb doesn’t happen until a good way through. There are enough strange details and mini mysteries that keep you reading. In fact, the murder itself is only a tiny part of the overall mysteries this book has in store! Despite the initial slow pace, the short chapters made it absolutely addictive, and I found I needed to know answers as much as the characters did.

You’ve also got a lovely unreliable, omniscient narrator who lets her characters know only what she wants them to know, and who does the same to us but makes us privy to details that the others don’t know yet in places. It’s a fun way to read a story and see it unfold before you and the characters together!

It immediately made it onto my elusive favourites list and is one I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend!

Excellent concept but a failure of delivery. In the constant attempt to evade the reader's perception of the solution the plot/investigation became a convoluted mess with clues that may have been red herrings or dead ends or may just have been forgotten in all the confusion. The characters, aside from Emory, Abi and Niema are poorly defined and are largely just used as convenient plot devices and while I enjoyed the partial narration from an AI it created an odd tone and was soon frustrating knowing that Abi has all the answers but is wading through all the pitfalls of the turgid narrative anyway. The twist, when it comes, is underwhelming and less interesting than some of the possibilities explored but dismissed earlier on.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of Turton’s last book, The Devil and the Sark Water, but I enjoyed this one quite a bit. I did guess most of the plot twists in advance, but I’m fine with that, just shows the plot wasn’t too insane 😂

It's a unique blend of sci-fi and post-apocalyptic fiction with a murder mystery at its core. I absolutely devoured it! It was way more enjoyable than I anticipated, especially since my recent reads have been rather average.

Given the genre mix, you do need to be a bit more forgiving of some of the more far-fetched elements, though there were moments when I thought, "That’s a bit of a stretch." Additionally, the book introduces so many characters that it can be hard to keep track of who’s important to the story.

Despite these minor issues, I found it unputdownable. The murder mystery and the broader themes—AI, genetics, the environment, etc.—were thoroughly engaging. The audiobook, narrated by Adjoa Andoh, added even more depth to the experience. I found it twisty, fun, and compelling, though I understand it might not be everyone’s cup of tea for a crime thriller. This book has definitely piqued my interest in exploring more of this author's work.

I will be honest with you. I didn’t know what I was going to get with this. I just liked the cover and the blurb on the book, but I had such a good time with this.

It’s such a strange beast. It’s sci-if post-apocalyptic novel with a murder mystery at its heart. And I devoured this! I had such a blast with this, much more than I thought I would as the last few reads have been very middle of the road for me.

Because this is a mix of genres, you do have to give a tad more leeway over some of the far-fetched moments and elements, though there were several times that I did go “that seems like a stretch”. Plus, there are so many names thrown at the reader that you need a moment to go “are you important to the story?”

But this was unputdownable with the murder and the wider issues this book tackled (AI, generics, the environment, etc) and the audiobook is narrated by Adjoa Andoh makes this feel much richer. I really liked this as it was twisty, fun, unputdownable read, but I completely understand that this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea reading for a crime thriller. I must say I’m intrigued to try out this author’s previous works.

Wow! I love this author but I think he has outdone himself with this book!

Such brilliant writing that it is a pleasure to read. I was gripping from start to finish. The last murder at the end of the world is such a unique concept, brilliantly written with so many twist and secrets uncovered along the way.

Absolutely astonishing!

While the premise of The Last Murder at the End of the World is interesting and unique, I really struggled with this one. The story flowed well while introducing all the characters, but I struggled following all of them, and some points to the story were quite far fetched and a bit too complex. I still enjoyed reading this, but was not an amazing of a read as Evelyn Hardcastle ...

The Last Murder at the End of the World - Stuart Turton

This book started off great for me, I was so intrigued and enjoyed the flow of the book, but half way through I started to struggle with it and wanted to get to the conclusion, I felt it really slowed down. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and I found the setting and relationships fascinating. I have really enjoyed other books by this author so will look forward to more from them in the future. Thanks so much Netgalley, Bloomsbury Publishing Plc and Raven Books for the e-arc in return for my honest thoughts and opinions

I struggled with this book, The Last Inhabitants in the World: A Dark Fog creeps closer to the island, entwined with a mystery of a long life for some and a short life for others. Then, there is a murder that no one remembers and a race against time before the island is taken over by the fog, and everyone dies. I think this is well-written and interesting, but it didn't work for me.

This was a gripping read, I thought the characters were intriguing and I'm going to keep an eye out for more from this author.

The last humans on earth reside on a Greek island surrounded by a deadly fog. Life appears idyllic for the 122 villagers and the 3 elders (scientists who worked at a research post underground before the end of the world). Watching over them is Abi, an artificial intelligence tasked to protect those living on the island.

When Niema, the head elder is found dead, the security system protecting the island from the fog fails, and the residents have 107 hours to save themselves. Abi was instructed to erase everyone’s memories of the night before so anyone could be the murderer… and not even know it.

Turton’s books are always unpredictable and original. His debut The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle was one of my favourite reads a few years back. The Last Murder is a sci-fi/post-apocalyptic story with a murder mystery at its core. There are lots of characters to keep tabs on but the standout ones for me were Abi (who acts as the narrator), the elder Thea and Ciara who is tasked with solving the murder.

Turton’s work also looks at much wider social issues such as artificial intelligence, societal control and genetic engineering which was really interesting additions to the story. The suspense is maintained throughout and Turton delivers plenty of twists in terms of the murder mystery.

Thanks to NetGalley and Bloomsbury Publishing for the arc. Out now!
