Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me this eARC to review.
I loved the fashion within this book but I do feel like I personally expected more photographs within it. The articles with the photographs and illustrations was a nice touch which, while was expected by something from The Times, was unexpected as I haven't read a book with that concept before.
I wish it had gone further back in time with other Royals but I do understand that The Times hasn't been around forever and can only go so far back within their archives for the relevant content.
A good coffee table book!
Interesting compilation of historical fashion photography and newspaper clippings from given period. I probably was hoping that there would be more pictures, so that analysis of royal fashion was more profound, but I gather that the authors were limited by the photos available in The Times archives. For a photo album, it's quite wordy, but still a satisfying collection of royal pieces of fashion throughout the years.
Being fans of the Royals and fashion I thought this would be a sure hit with myself and my daughter (10). My daughter enjoyed it but I found it quite wordy and would’ve expected far more photographs. I would’ve also loved a section on the Royal children’s clothes. This is mainly a collection of historical Times articles that mention anything to do with the Royals and fashion. Having said that, the photos that were included were lovely.
Thank you Netgalley and Collins for this ARC.
An interesting compliation of Times articles on different aspects of royal dress and fashion through the centuries, very nicely laid out with fascinating photos from the archive.
Anyone who is interested in royal life and/or fashion will find much to enjoy in this book. It is wide ranging with interesting text and loads of photos.
Readers learn that royals are generally under extreme scrutiny even, in modern times, when they are off duty. Think of how Diana’s gym attire became iconic. Think about that and also go back in time to when Victoria’s clothes were a topic of much interest.
Read in order (starting with some royal brides) or browse. Either way this book is an enjoyable one.
This book would make a terrific holiday gift for someone on your gift list. It could also be a nice indulgence for one’s self.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Collins Reference-Times Books for this title. All opinions are my own.
By far the most interesting book to read this year! I loved every minute of reading this book and looking at the incredible pictures. Pictures I had never seen before also. The information was well written and intrigued me and kept me wanting to read more and to learn more about the previous royal members of the family.
Thankyou Netgalley and publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this stunning book!
An intriguing and fascinating book that would be a perfect coffee table one. It's an interesting and entertaining way to se the evolution of the Royal Family through fashion.
I loved the illustrations and it kept me reading.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
It was great to see the history of the fashion within the Royals. This would be a great addition to any coffee table.
This was an interesting read, well researched and illustrated,. I was particularly keen to read it as I had studied theatre costume at the height of Diana's appeal to the public and my dissertation had been on Royal fashion.
I was surprised to read that her 'Revenge' dress only cost £900. What a bargain for such an iconic dress and the impact it had.
Thanks to Netgalley.
The Times British Royal Fashion
by Foreword by Anna Murphy, Edited by Jane Eastoe and Times Books
A fascinating book that provided a great content about the fashion of the British Royal families in different eras. It gave us the full picture of what they were wearing in various occasions completed with lots of previous photos.
The book introduced the Royal fashion by 7 topics: bride, tailoring, power & glory (coronation), glamour, at play, colour and final flourishing. I enjoyed reading them by topics as I could have an in-depth understanding of each content.
The Royal Family's fashion history is a fascinating topic, and this book includes some exquisite images from many eras. The content is largely derived from Times articles from the period the dress was worn, and the majority of it is plainly from the photography era and focuses on the women. The narrative was enjoyable and there were some lovely pictures, but I thought it lacked some substance. That should not come as a surprise because each of the women depicted, especially Queen Elizabeth II, Diana, Kate, and the Duchess of Windsor, had distinctive styles that could easily fill an entire book. It would also be impossible to cover every aspect of such a broad topic.
If you are a royal family enthusiast I highly recommend this book to you!
Well curated, very interesting read.
Some delightful throwback to fashion statements i forgot about. Really enjoyable
The history of fashion within the Royal Family is a rich subject and this book contains some beautiful photos from across the years. Most of it is obviously taken from the photographic era and centres around the women, and much of the text is taken from Times articles from the time the outfit was worn. There were some beautiful photographs and I enjoyed the text but, if anything, it felt a little lacking in depth. That is hardly surprising - the fashion of each of the women featured (especially Queen Elizabeth II, Diana, Kate, the Duchess of Windsor) could easily fill a book alone and it would be impossible to go into any particular detail over such a vast subject. It's a lovely book to look at, though, and has a lot of good information so it's an excellent general history of the subject.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance copy in return for an honest review.

What a beautiful treasure tomb of the Royals and fashion throughout the years. This showcases how fashion forward they all are especially our beloved Queen who is sadly missed. This book is a lovely addition to any coffee table it’s just beautiful.
Beautiful photos throughout history of the Royal family.
I feel like there was a lot of detail about the origins of certain styles and fashions that have endured amongst the royals, along with information about the designers and tailors, such as ede and ravenscroft.
Apart from the odd callback to historical events, like when Queen Elizabeth II was meeting the guards, but still in mourning for her father, a lot of the captions were a little... empty.
A lot of comments about the younger royals, Megan Markle in particular, seemed quite frivolous and unkind.
Whilst the photographs are beautiful and really interesting to see, a lot of the commentary really put me off.
