This is a graphic novel about the Holocaust with a difference. Estelle and her family lived in rural Poland, they did loose family members but the circumstances of those losses were different to those who were sent to the ghettoes or concentration camps. It is a story of family love, great loyalty and courage from friends and a testament to a remarkable family and community.
The book is organised in a way which emphasises the loving relationships before the war, then the development of more and more restrictions. It also shows how the issues did not end with the end of the war. It still took a long time to recover and find their place in society. What a resilient family the survivors were.
It should appeal to those who enjoy simply drawn but very effective characters. There is a context for the events. We are told about the lives of the characters at the end of the book and how they have continued to speak about the Holocaust to younger people. The artist, Sammy Savos explains in great detail how she drew and produced the book.
The book should be another useful tool to help educate the world about the Holocaust and be especially useful for 10 - 13 year olds.
