I was a fan of Megan Goodwin 's Escape Room and was looking forward to reading this.
This was also very good, some suprises along the way and hopefully there will be more.

The Night Swim follows a trial for a rape case in the small town of Neapolis and Rachel Krall, who hosts a true crime podcast, and is covering the trial in real time for its newest season. This book explores the ways in which society views sexual violence particularly in the case when the attacker is from a well respected family and in this case is a successful athlete.

I thought the format of this book was really interesting and viewing the trial through a true crime podcast lens made this stand out as different from other mystery/thrillers. Goldin's writing was very fast paced and engaging and I found myself using the phrase 'just one more chapter' far too many times whilst reading this book. Some of the chapters were written as transcripts of Rachel's podcast which I thought worked well as a way to summarise the evidence from the trial and also as some relief from the trial chapters which could be quite heavy and emotionally taxing in places. I thought the commentary surrounding sexual violence was very realistic and the fictional case covered in this book could very easily have been a transcript from any number of actual rape trials.

However, this book follows two timelines and I didn't find the past timeline as interesting so at times it broke the momentum of the current timeline. By the end of the book I could see why this timeline was included and I thought the book wrapped up nicely.

Overall I really enjoyed this book and I loved Goldin's writing style. I already have the next book in the series 'Dark Corners' which I am very excited to read!

This was a really compelling and gripping thriller that had my attention the whole way through.
It was well paced and I liked the true crime podcast spin to the story.
Because of the subject matter, it was frustrating at times, as you would expect. This definitely didn't detract from the story but made it feel all too realistic and made it really thought provoking.
I can't wait to read the next book in this series and to see what Megan Goldin does next more generally.

True crime podcaster Rachel goes to a small American town to report on a rape trial and soon gets drawn into another story from the past. There seems to be a lot of crime novels currently based around podcasts and they can start to feel a bit similar. I enjoyed Megan Goldin’s take on this genre, I liked the character of Rachel and I enjoyed the atmospheric small town setting. The author writes sensitively about the horrific crime and gives a believable portrayal of the attitudes around it. An immersive and compelling read.

A true crime podcaster seeking justice arrives in a small town rocked by tragedy. There to attend a trial, she soon gets drawn into a concurrent case which may well have links to the Court case and past and present may well collide - but with what result? Sharply written suspense with difficult themes, a deftly drawn and credible cast and a pacy plot with an effective dual narrative pulling the past into the present.

This isn't necessarily the most fast paced or gripping thriller you'll ever read, but nevertheless, there's something about this that draws you in. (And no, it's nothing like the recent movie of the same name!)

A true crime podcaster is sucked into investigating a suspicious death that has been written off as an unfortunate tragedy. It's really the underlying issues that are what's interesting here - how women are treated compared to men when it comes to certain behaviours and standards as well as what happens when a man commits a crime against a woman. There's nothing new or groundbreaking here, which is the sad tragedy - too many women will identify all too closely with what happens here.

While this might be a difficult read for some, overall, it's engaging and well worth discovering what really went on during the Night Swim.

I'm a fan of Megan Goodwin 's 'escape room' and was looking forward to reading this.

It felt very different to the escape room, but was as enjoyable. I thought that the main character, Rachel is a successful true crime podcaster and thought that weaving in the podcast updates and investigation was clever.

A good story, with some good surprises, would read another in this series.

For anyone who likes or has read the work of Holly Jackson, then this is the book for you. It is so different from your usual, psychological thriller, it is so much more and so gripping. This is the type of book you read in one sitting by a cosy fire on a cold, winters night. This is a first for me by the author and one I enjoyed and would read more of their work. The book cover is eye-catching and appealing and would spark my interest if in a bookshop. Thank you very much to the author, publisher and Netgalley for this ARC.

This is my first novel by author Megan Goldin and I really enjoyed the story. We meet main character Rachel Krall, she is a podcaster reporting on crimes that have been committed. She takes cases and manages to solve them. She is a great character, well rounded and an extremely strong woman.

She travels to report on a case that is being on trial, whilst this trial is happening some letters start to appear asking Rachel for help in what appeared to be an accidental drowning many years ago but the sister of the victim is claiming it is murder.

I really enjoyed the way Megan Goldin writes and each chapter is highly enjoyable. I was so glad to see that there is a second novel with Rachel Krall as the main character and can not wait to read it.

A brilliant story with so many twists and turns. Rachel Krall has just become up there as one of my new favourite series to follow! Be prepared to keep reading late into the night....

Rachel Krall is well plotted and clever characters, I like the evolution of the characters and how she investigate.
The stories are fast paced and gripping, kept me guessing and entertaining.

Two stories blended into one. The issue of social attitude towards rape is a huge part of this book an£ dealt will well. However I couldn’t understand the premise of the podcast because it was clear from the start what the podcast producer wanted all the listeners to think. Despite it being sold as a tale you will d3cide on yourselves with just the trial information being given. The cold case was good but predictable.

Rachel Krall is headed to Neapolis, a small town on the coast where a headline-grabbing trial is about to take place. A local golden boy, a swimmer, stands accused of raping a young girl following a party. Rachel is the brains behind a true crime podcast which has been very popular in its first two seasons & she needs a new format for the third season: a live trial. Rachel will be at the court so her listeners can follow the case in real time & decide for themselves: guilty or not guilty. At a rest stop on the way there, Rachel returns to her car to find a note on the windscreen asking for her help. The note is from Hannah & she wants Rachel to help her find out what really happened to her sister twenty five years earlier.

This was a difficult book to read. Not because it's badly written but I found the subject matter harrowing. The narrative is told from Rachel's point of view but we also get Hannah's view of what happened all those years ago in the form of letters to Rachel. Both storylines look at the price that women & girls pay when it comes to sexual assault. Rachel asks a pertinent question about why murder & rape are viewed so differently - people tend not to argue a murder victim "asked for it" but the same doesn't apply to sexual assault. Why? Does a victim have to be dead before they can get justice? With conviction rates at an all time low this is a well-written, timely read but a difficult one.

Complex mystery which raises many questions about our attitudes towards rape. A good story with a complex plot telling two stories.

I’ve been desperate to read this book for a while after reading some great reviews about it. Well, it certainly didn’t disappoint.
It’s a great thriller and one that I’d definitely recommend.
I finished this book a few weeks ago, but the plot has stuck with me.
This is my first book by this author, but it definitely won’t be the last. A great book!

A mystery about a true crime podcaster covering a rape trial in a small town who is drawn into a cold case from twenty years ago. I found the story quite slow and depressing although the dynamics of a small town were well written True crime enthusiasts will enjoy the narrative.

This book really kept me gripped and I enjoy reading books by Megan Goldin, definitely recommend this book.

i have to admit this book made me so angry, so so angry that i had to put it down several times and walk away...but it is also so gripping in its narrative that i had to keep reading it to find out what happened and what was about to happen....

this book should also come with a warning in case it triggers for people

rachel krall has a true crime podcast that is very popular, for season 3 she intends to follow a trial in a small town... the trial is a rape case a very controversial rape case, the accused is a popular young man destined for greatness and an olympic swimmer

the victim a young girl is being thrown to the wolves her every action is being decimated, her friends have deserted her and the family are like pharaohs in the town

but even as the court starts rachel is being left messages from someone else about another rape case 20 years ago with a haunting theme that runs between the two cases

let me say again this book made me so angry at times.... we need to stop blaming the victims of rape man this book was amazing hitting all my nerves...

Superb thriller!
This is an amazing read, covering a story in the present,which is a court trial, and also the uncovering of what happened in a death years ago.
I was hooked by the ongoing trial, the podcast, Hannah's struggle to find out about her sister's death, and the interesting characters involved.
What a great author, I highly recommend and will be reading more of Megan Goldin's books!

The Night Swim by Megan Goldin is the first book in the new Rachel Krall series and was an excellent book from the start to the finish. Once I opened my kindle and started to read it I was gripped and ended up reading it all day. However, it was hard to read in parts as this book covers rape and murder but well done to the author Megan Goldin for covering these sensitive subjects the way she did.
