I’m sorry, I really thought I would enjoy this book, but I didn’t. I’m sure it will appeal to a lot of people, but I’m definitely not one of them.
‘Reader, she married him. But not before a LOT of discussion of his behaviour in the group chat.’
My thanks to Hodder & Stoughton for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘Jane Eyre on Social Media’ by Sarah Day and Claire McGowan.
The plain yet plucky Jane Eyre is ready to leave Lowood School, which was rated by the Office for Standards in Children’s Incarceration (OFSTINC) as 2.5 - Better Than Workhouse, and seek her way in the wider world.
She answers an advertisement to become the ‘Governess for 1 child of mysterious origins’, who is Adèle Varens, the French ward of Edward Rochester. Yet there are a lot of Red Flags, including the requirement that the successful applicant for the position not ask too many questions about noises from the attic.
Apparently the authors Claire McGowan and Sarah Day had great success when they imagined how 'Pride and Prejudice on Social Media' might look. So, now Charlotte Brontë’s classic receives a similar treatment of being retold through emails, search histories, social media and chat room posts.
Overall, I found this irreverent retelling of ‘Jane Eyre’ such fun from start to finish and plan to read their first book soon.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this eARC of 'Jane Eyre on Social Media' by Sarah Day and Claire McGowan.
This book is one that you'll either love, hate or really stumped on. I adore Jane Eyre, its been my favourite novel since I was around about 11 and so Jane Eyre retellings excite me to a high degree. 'Jane Eyre on Social Media' is exactly what it says: a retelling of Jane Eyre that takes place via text chains, newspapers, tweets and forums. Now this is intriguing and such a fun concept but I found the writing almost too cringey to bare with at times and it just felt uncomfortable for me to fully enjoy this concept.
I loved this modern twist on this classic! It was fun, hilarious and so well written. Parts of it where also brilliantly relatable. Can't help but recommend this!
You are either going to love this book or hate it. One for sampling before you buy I think. I also think it will help if you already know the story before you go in. In fact, for full enjoyment, you'll also need a bit of background of a few other classic books as they and their characters are referenced throughout.
So... it's the classic tale of Jane Eyre, orphan, lived with family, sent to school, became a teacher... etc etc... All played out in the wonderful world of social media. Yes the title does give it away somewhat.
Using forums, group chats, DMs, and other online goodies, we follow - quite accurately - the original Brontë story. From many different perspectives.
Highlights for me were some of the group chats of those who work for Rochester, especially Grace Poole. I also loved certain characters' forays into asking for advise on certain forums. It all did make me laugh. Lots!
I see from the author's back catalogues that they have also retold Pride and Prejudice in a similar way. I'm definitely going to seek that bad boy out.
My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.
This would make a fabulous present for any Charlotte Bronte enthusiasts in your life (and, indeed, someone whose passion for literature goes beyond Bronte, as there are some delicious intertextual easter eggs in this). Such a quick, light read that'll have you giggling in spite of yourself
A brilliantly amusing satire that brings the classic Jane Eyre into modernity via snappy social media commentary. There are laugh out loud moments, which for me included the drawings and clever references to other classic texts that focus on common tropes in the classics genre. This is a fun text with a witty comedic spin and definitely one to put on your tbr pile. A more thorough review will be available in Lyric Lounge Review after the publication date.
Thank you to the authors, publishers and Netgalley for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Jane Eyre on Social Media offers a delightful twist on the classic tale of Jane Eyre, reimagining it in a world where social media exists. This clever retelling combines charm, wit, and humour to create an engaging and hilarious narrative. It's a fun and refreshing way to bring a timeless classic into the modern age, a must read for anyone looking for a fresh take on a beloved story!
I always feel like an utter killjoy when I fail to gel with books like this. I liked Shakespearean Star Wars. I have a sense of humour, honest! I think though this one nettled me from early on because of the chatter between characters upon whom the plot relies that they have no contact. Perhaps Jane Eyre is just one of those novels that does not update well. In fairness there are not as many “modernised adaptations” compared to other literary classics. Sorry - it was a miss for me!
If you read nothing else this year, read this! It's honestly the best read of the year.
It's a retelling of Jane Eyre, told as if social media were alive then. Characters from other stories, both American and English (Mrs de Winter, Elizabeth Bennett, John Brooke....) and the original, peripheral cast each wade in on the social media posts, with their advice.
Not only is it a clever idea for a retelling, it's charming, witty and downright hilarious!
Buy multiple copies to give as Christmas gifts :)
I really enjoy reading classic novels so it was interesting to read this classic novel as a more modern and very current retelling.
i had fun and liked this retelling of Jane Eyre using social media. A lot of fun and a good way to make modern a classic
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
This is a cute take on the classic! It would be great for anyone who’s a fan of the original novel. The formatting could use some work as I found it didn’t flow quite as well as I would like.I did however thoroughly enjoy the current pop culture references to modern tv shows etc.
What a funny and quirky book!
When I saw this advertised , I liked the idea of a modern take on an old classic and it was a light hearted read.
Join Jane as she lives her life on social media and how the authors would have imagined it would have played out.
An enjoyable, easy read.
Sarah and Claire have already reassessed Pride and Prejudice through the wonders (and hilarities) of social media, now they’re turning to Bronte. Jane Eyre, plain, fond of gruel and mysteriously immune to all illness, wants to make her way in the world. But when she meets Edward Rochester, does the phrase ‘red flag’ come to her mind? This hilarious retelling of the orphan, the handsome landowner, the French ward and those noises in the attic will definitely make fans of the classic novel laugh. From dating advice if you’re a man of wealth to secret WhatsApp groups and social media posts, one definitely worth putting into a book lover’s stocking.
I really enjoyed this short and snappy take on the classic, Jane Eyre. I loved the epistolary format and the humorous take on the story. It was a bonus that it featured other famous characters from classic literature, advising Jane in a forum. Really well done and difficult to put down. I see the authors have done the same thing with Pride and Prejudice and I am definitely adding that to my TBR.
I would definitely recommend this book to fans of the classics, satire and epistolary books. Thank you to the authors, publisher and NetGalley for an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
