My daughter enjoyed this novel.
Charlie is a typical 12 year old until he stumbles into an adventure involving a gorilla.
The winning aspect of this book for y children was the layout. Each page had excellent drawings and also elements of the adventure displayed through illustrations. Maps, posters etc and scattered throughout the pages. This meant she flew through the pages of the book.
The ending left you wanting more! She has already requested volume 2.
Charlie Small falls through a time gap and finds himself in Gorilla city where he must use his skills and ingenuity in order to find his way home
My 9 year old son found this to be an easy and quick read, if not a particularly challenging one in terms of vocabulary, but for me the enjoyment of reading is fair more important and so would recommend. He particularly liked the varied annotated illustrations throughout the book and said he’d be keen to read more in the series
I really enjoyed the style of this book. Written in short chapters, it will be perfect for newly confident readers or as a read out loud story time book. I love the little doodles and illustrations throughout as and this is part of a series, I can already picture several of my class asking me to purchase the rest.
One minute Charlie is on leisurely trip along the river on his raft (useful tactic to avoid tiding his room) when a flash of lightening and swirling waters launch him off an adventure that he really hadn't seen coming... despite having his explorers backpack to hand.
Charlie is launched into an unusual world filled with a rampaging rhino, a hungry crocodile, glowing snake and even a shiny new discovery that he decides to name after himself... like all great explorers. But. Everytime he uses his phone to call home, his mum says the exact same thing. Strange. Very strange. With non-stop energy and adventures The Lost Diary of Charlie Small is perfect for all those who love lively, action-packed books!
Engaging voice, immersive descriptions and brilliant energy - Nick Ward has created a fabulous, adventure series that's perfect for all budding explorers!
I enjoyed this. Definitely one that I think we’ll buy for school to get children to read because I think they’ll enjoy this. Lovely illustrations too.
This ticks every box for a chapter book. The different formats: diary, maps and diagrams makes the text easily accessible and less intimidating for younger readers and the plot is instantly engaging, appealing to any children who love adventuring and exploring. The plot is fast-paced with high stakes and the imagination is big and bold - who isn't going to enjoy steampunk rhinoceros, giant dragonflies and gorillas? There's loads of action packed into the short length and a clear link to STEM. The cliffhanger ending leads onto the next adventure which we instantly wanted to read. Highly enjoyable and entertaining.
