Danni Carter is an emergency room consulting doctor in her early 30s. For the past seven years she has secretly been in love with her best friend Esther’s boyfriend Lucas - now fiancé - hoping that Esther would somehow fall for someone else. She even moved from a hospital in London (where Lucas practiced as a surgeon and Esther as a nurse) to St. Piran’s, a small hospital in Cornwall to try to get a fresh start away from Lucas.
Danni purchased a cottage in Port Kara, and was just starting to get adjusted when she learned that Esther, Lucas, and Esther’s family were all moving to Cornwall. Moreover, Esther and Lucas got jobs at the same hospital as Danni.
Meanwhile, Danni got close to an accident victim, Connie Berrycloth, who required multiple surgeries and so was a long-term patient. Connie had a secret that was eating her up, especially in light of her near-death experience. She wanted to confess to the people it affected, but was terrified to lose those who mattered the most to her. With Danni’s help, as well as that of the forthright and outspoken Gwen from the gift shop, Connie decided to face her fears, and in turn, helped Danni to face her similar situation.
Evaluation: There are some good characters in this book, but the endless back and forth by the characters on what they should or shouldn’t do got to be a bit tiresome. Nevertheless, it has the promise of being an engaging series.
I absolutely love this authors books and adored the Cornish midwife series so was super excited for this new series as it combines all the things I love in a book along with a hospital setting.
This book introduced us to some fabulous new characters as well as appearances from old favourites and love the setting of port Kara and the familiar Cornish vibes.
This was a story of secrets and friendships and how everything can seem better with a little help from friends.
I can’t wait to read the next instalment of this series.
Jo Bartlett does it again. The start of a brand-new series and I am already invested in the people and the place!
Danni Carter is looking for a fresh start after moving from London to Cornwall. She’s running away from Lucas Newman, the man she has loved for years and a man she can never be with. He is engaged to Danni’s best friend Esther and Esther means the world to her. But Lucas and Esther decide to follow Danni to Cornwall, announcing they will be working with her at the new St Piran’s hospital. Will she have to give up her new life before it’s even started?
After a big accident, Danni gets to know patient Connie, very well. With both women sharing their secrets, how long will it take for them to be revealed and their lives changed dramatically.
A gorgeously heart warming read, friendship, family and long lost love. I love how Jo builds a wonderful community, with descriptive settings and brilliant characters who you will just love, well perhaps except for one – who thoroughly deserves anything that comes to them.
When secrets are revealed and hearts broken, will both women have a happy ever after? With some interesting twists along the way, there is romance, drama and light relief. A great first book in the series, I already cannot wait to return for the next book!

Danni is starting afresh in the depths of Cornwall, working hard, sleeping and then repeating. Why? She's trying to escape the person she's had a crush on for 7 years. She's doing well and starting to make friends in the Cornish Country Hospital, until they move closer to her again so she can't get away!
At the start of the book I wasn't sure which direction this would take, whether she'd end up with the person she'd be pining for or if she would finally be able to move on. Luckily, it went the way I hoped it would!
This is a charming little country romance, the only thing I'd say is if you have health anxiety then it might not be a great book for you because it's set largely within a hospital/the medical field.
There are a range of different ages and backgrounds of characters, and some slightly differing perspectives so you're not always focused on one of them. This adds variety to the book and extends the story with more detail and other, more interesting, aspects because it all becomes interleaved cleverly.
Would recommend!
Thank you to NetGalley for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

📚Thoughts&Opinions:
I would love to say to Jo Bartlett that this work is really amazing. This book transported me straight to the world of Port Kara! It's like living and breathing alongside these captivating characters.
This book is giving The Good Doctor vibes🤭. Perfectly built characters and I love Charlie the most(Team charlie all the way❤💃). In this novel, there is a combination of medicine, love, family, friends, intriguing secrets and secret affairs and a dash of romantic turmoils all mashed up together to create this beautiful story, I can't wait for the next book in the series. 🏖🏖
💔 Connie&Richard- 40 years of hiding their love 😥
💞 Esther&Dannie- Their friendship is an absolute treasure.
I yearn for a friend who cherishes me as Esther does Dannie. But I this isn't about me; back to the book! 😩📚
💔 Esther&Lucas -was there ever love in this ship😒
💔 Dannie&Lucas- Lucas just needed someone to rub his ego and I am happy Dannie didn't push her luck with him.
💑 Dannie&Charlie- just the perfect pair, oh a love story with dogs🤭
I love this book❤❤

i wanted to know the drama but i was honestly just skimming by 40%. i did not like the writing format, i found it difficult to follow so i skipped to the end. the end wasn’t all that fulfilling either.
I read this book about 85% of the way through and just could not get into it. I’m personally a plot driven reader, but I think this book would be great for those who like to see a lot of character development. In that regard, I’m happy to encourage my followers to still give it a try if that’s the reader they identify as, it just wasn’t my cup of tea.
Welcome to the Cornish Country Hospital, I found the story bittersweet. The characters took their own merry time to realise, differentiate their infatuations, dependency from love and affection. It was a good reading time though as the story gave me reasons to root for and hope the heroines kick the nasty guy out.
Welcome to The Cornish Country Hospital is the first in a brand new series from bestselling author Jo Bartlett. I fell in love with the authors books after discovering The Cornish Midwife series.
Danni Carter is looking for a fresh start after moving from London to Cornwall. She’s hoping to forget her feelings for Lucas Newman, a man she can never be with, because he’s engaged to Danni’s best friend Esther. But Lucas and Esther decide to follow Danni to Cornwall, and announce they will be working at the new St Piran’s hospital. Will she have to give up her new life before it’s even started?
Danni finds herself drawn to new patient, Connie Berrycloth, a woman with secrets of her own. But secrets from both women will eventually be revealed…
The friendship and love make this a heartwarming read. Danni finds it difficult to start over and the reader experiences many emotions through Danni and Esther’s viewpoints.
Then there is hospital patient Connie revealing secrets of her past to Danni. Can both women learn from their mistakes and find their own happy ending?
Wonderful characters and full of Jo’s signature warmth. I can’t wait to read more of this series.
Thank you to Netgalley and Boldwood Books for the arc I received in exchange for my honest opinion.
This was such a wonderful and enjoyable read!!!! I loved this book and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys this genre. Thank you so much to the publisher and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Danni leaves her job in London to take one in the countryside to get away from her best friend and her fiancé. Danni has been in love with Lucas for as long as Esther has, but Esther is her best friend and she would never do anything to compromise that. Moving away seems like the best option to distance herself from possible bad decisions, and to give herself the chance to move on. However, Esther and Lucas follow her and also take jobs at the Cornish County Hospital. How will Danni navigate this situation again.
The early chapters feel like a tv show, with each chapter having a new emergency at the hospital for Danni to deal with. Bus crashes, unknown pregnancies, broken bones. Though this she meets Connie, and the spark up an unlikely friendship as Connie try’s to navigate her on past and secrets.
The later chapters focus more on the story of Danni and the story of Connie. Navigating life, friendships and relationships in a small town. Danni becomes more enjoyable of a character but she wasn’t my favourite at all. Connie was better, but not the focus of the book.
Overall enjoyable.
what is not to like about this. must read and enjoyed this one. I was hooked from the first page and will read more.
Jo Bartlett has done it again with another fantastic book! I want to say so much but don’t want to give anything away! Danni Carter moves from London to Cornwall to work at St Piran’s hospital and start a fresh. What she doesn’t count on is her best friend Esther and boyfriend Lucas moving down there too. He was one of the reasons she needed to move away. I got totally absorbed in this and read it in one day! Such wonderful descriptive characters and locations, this oozes warmth, friendship, heartache and everything in between. There were a couple of characters from the Cornish Midwives series mentioned and Jo always makes it easy to understand how everyone is connected. I can’t wait for the next one in this new series. Thank you to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for the ARC
Solid romance. Albeit silly drama. I enjoyed the writing a mostly the characters. I would recommend the book.
A start of another great series . Some amazing characters. Some you did not warm too.. Danni had moved to Cornwall to escape her best friends but they followed . It was lovely to have old characters from the midwife series pop up. Some of the medical descriptions were very real. I am struggled to review this without spoiling the story. You have great friends , a very clever but horrid man, parents loss, an old love , new love , a cute baby seal. Jo Bartlett at her best . Read it , you won’t be disappointed
A story about two women who both have kept secrets to protect those they love, one 40 years ago and one currently. Both Dan and Connie are good characters and the storyline well paced as we alternate between them and they try to unravel the secrets without hurting the very loved ones they want to protect.
I absolutely loved Jo Bartlett! She is one of my favorite Boldeood Books authors! I was so excited she has a new book out for request! I’ve really been on a Greys Anatomy kick which is not me so I was very excited when I saw the theme if this book. Also I loved the idea of our main being in love with someone she cannot have. I think we’ve all been there at some point in our lives. I was so curious to how this story was going to play out as well as patient who throws the story in a whole new direction with her secrets. Such a great fun fast paced read! I couldn’t put it down. Highly recommended. Cannot wait to read more from Jo and I’m not sure if this might turn into a series which would be great as well!
This was just fabulous. It has a ring of sadness running through it, with soul mates, star crossed lovers and stalking all muddled up and knotted through the tale. A beautiful romance of friends, best friends and pets!
This is told well, with emotion running through the words and the beautiful Cornish cost, complete with baby seals.
Omg this gave me greys anatomy vibes. 2 female with a fierce and strong friendship. Unique characters/patients at the hospital, where you follow their story. Omg i gobbled it up with a sprinkle of romance.
Thank you to netgalley for letting me read this e arc in exchange for an honest opinion
