I read this book not knowing it was a kind of sequel to a book I hadn't read! There was no indication that it was a sequel and reads as a standalone. With a very intriguing plot, I feel like it could have been executed a little better in the sense of the fact that I thought there was a lot of filler chapters. I understand why some of them were there, but I do feel like there were a few here and there that could have been cut back to get to the resolution just that little quicker.

A real guessing game of a page turner.

I loved this book and found it totally refreshing to have a proper murder mystery novel. I’ve not read anything by this author before but from the moment I started I knew I was onto a good thing!

Well constructed, great pace throughout and some pretty interesting characters! I found the whole story very engaging and loved the flip between investigation and Rachel Krall’s podcast that she recorded after the events.

Rachel’s a really interesting character, I don’t feel like I got to know much about her and her life to be able to tell you exactly what type of person she is. But I like her style and tone and found her to be very believable.

The only part I found a bit tiresome was the over-romanticised relationship. i get why it was in there but i felt like it was a bit too much 'soppy lovesick teenager' and not very grown up. That aside, i really loved it!

thanks to NetGalley for my advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

Wow, what a ride! This is the first Megan Goldin book I've read, but I don't feel like I'm at a disadvantage as Megan was able to weave the backstory into Dark Corners efficiently. I loved the character of Rachel Krall, and I'll be looking out for the next instalment. What happened to Maddison Logan and can true crime Rachel Krall unravel the mystery before it's too late. 4 stars

I love thrillers that are based around influencers and online activities so I was keen to get stuck into this one and boy, did i get stuck in! It was all a bit messy and confusing at the start and even now, I've still no clue why an influencer would be involved I an investigation but whatever...... it was such a fun read! It doesn't only have suspense and tension, it has a wee bit humour and a wee bit romance. It touches on everything which was a nice change. Granted, there's a lot going on and a lot of threads to untangle but I really enjoyed it

Firstly I would like to thank netgalley and Canelo and the author Megan goldin for an early copy of her book.

I enjoyed this read better than the first book in the series,as found the storyline and less of the podcast.Terence Bailey is in prison for theft,he is about to be released he recieves a visitor who was a total surprise Rachel Krall he loves her podcast but she wants information as girls have been murdered, has he anything to do with this?as another girl goes missing it's a race to see if shes alive..Maddison could be the next victim..a great riveting read looking forward to reading more of her books.

This book will be reviewed on goodreads and Amazon uk.

After having struggled with Megan Goldin's previous book, I wasn't entirely sure if I'd read another one of her books again. But that was a stand-alone and 'Dark Corners' is the second book featuring podcaster Rachel Karl, and I absolutely loved her first outing in 'Nightswim'. So I decided to give this author another go after all. Unfortunately for me, I was left rather disappointed at the end of it all.

Terence Bailey has spent the last six years in prison. Two for breaking and entering, another four for getting into trouble. The police are convinced he's a serial killer, but they've never been able to prove it. Within days, Terence will be released and suddenly he gets a visitor. Terence is able to pass a message to her, but then the girl goes missing. This is how Rachel gets involved, when the FBI pulls her into its investigation into the disappearance of Madison, the girl, and somehow counts on Rachel to get whatever necessary information from Terence.

First of all, the reason for Rachel to be summoned to Florida seemed rather flimsy to me. FBI agent Martinez is fully aware he's potentially putting her in danger but goes ahead with it anyway. And then the both of them miss a, what I thought, was massive clue, proving maybe neither one is very good at this investigative stuff. I didn't see the need for Martinez to have his own point-of-view in this story either. It made some of the paragraphs feel rather repetitive. As a reader, I think it all would have worked better if it had just been Rachel investigating and recording for her podcast.

I found too many things to be awfully predictable. And a lot of the story became bogged down by the influencer stuff that I found rather tedious. Ruthless that world may be, I thought it brought little to the overall mystery of Madison's disappearance. She was there, and then she was not. How many times does one have to read about pictures being taken of a blonde airhead? Why yes, stereotypes. There are a lot of them.

I couldn't figure out the connection between Madison and Terence, and was even less able to decide for myself whether Terence was or wasn't a serial killer. There was one reveal I thought was particularly well done, which took me by surprise and that's not easily done these days. But it also felt like "too little, too late" at that point.

Don't get me wrong, 'Dark Corners' isn't a bad book. There's enough intrigue and mystery to keep you entertained. (Even some romance *shudder*). It just doesn't come anywhere near 'Nightswim', and based on that book, I expect more from this author.

Oh this was good!

The writing was clever and thoughtful. I loved how the story unfolded with so much detail yet I didn't feel lost as a reader nor did I ever feel bored with the pacing. Every paragraph had meaning and purpose and it is a well-thought out story.

The reveals were great without being over-the-top or sensationalised.

I really loved Night Swim so when I heard there was a follow up, Dark Corners, I was hugely excited to receive a copy for review.

Unfortunately this one is nowhere near the standard of the first.

A story or missing/murdered young women, a man in prison who the police are convinced is a serial killer, all set to the background of an “influencers” gathering in a hotel.

This one just felt like it was trying too hard, throwing too much into the story to make it interesting. Where the first was focused and riveting, this one felt disjointed and was really hard to engage with.

Rachel Krall is a great character, a true crime podcaster who was a force of nature in the first, here I don’t think the story does her justice.

It’s not terrible or anything like that. It’s just a disappointing follow up to the fantastic Night Swim.
I hope the series continues and the author gets the series back on track.

Many thanks to the publisher for the ARC through Netgalley.

Amazing! So full of twists!
Rachel Krall ( who readers may have met in "The Night Swim") gets taken to visit a prisoner. The FBI need her help with murders from six years ago. There is also a current missing person, and Rachel investigates for her blog.
Great detailed characters and scenery, with a pulse racing plot! I love this author and will be excited to read more Megan Goldin. What an imagination!

Once I'd worked out who the characters and plots were, roughly, they started to come together in a more coherent fashion. Rachel is an investigative journalist come podcaster; Terence is in prison for breaking and entering although the police thinks he's a murderer, just couldn't find the evidence, He's also about to be released. Tom is a taxi driver with a medical problem, Madison is a missing influencer who is missing. Agent Martinez is FBI. Rachel then goes undercover at an influencer's convention to try to figure out what's happened to Madison. What a bunch of obsessives they are and there's a lot that social media needs to answer for. More murders occur and Rachel is in the thick of it. The perpetrator was really too easy to determine early on although I was intrigued to know their background story. Other than a brief hint of this, we never did find out. Frustrating. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy.

“The scariest monster is the one that hides in plain sight “ well when you read those words you can guarantee you are in for one hell of a ride and this book was certainly that and more !
So this is the second book featuring Rachel Krall the first being The Night Swim which I loved and this latest offering was even better in my opinion.Set partly in the world of influencers Rachel is asked by the FBI to visit an inmate in prison as her name has come up in a conversation the inmate has had with a missing influencer and so begins a brilliant and compulsive read that I couldn’t put down. I love the way Megan Goldin writes she has a knack of drawing you into a story but also can add humour and there was some laugh out loud moments in this book. I do hope we will have more in the series I love the character of Rachel Krall and would love to read about her in the future. For me this was an excellent read that was very well crafted and one I would highly recommend.
My thanks yo NetGalley and Canelo for giving me the opportunity to read the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

Dark Corners by Megan Goldin
☆☆☆☆☆ Out 16th November
Another fantastic novel by Megan Goldin. A dark and deranged glimpse inside the world of Internet influencers. This is the second book featuring Rachel Krall's, a genuinely brilliant investigative journalist. This tale is dark and convoluted, and your pulse will literally race throughout. Very recommended xx

Rachel Krall #2

Podcaster Rachel’s day goes awry following a phone call from the FBI which has her on a plane to Florida and then to a central Florida prison. Why is she there? It seems that two days earlier influencer Maddison Logan (@JustMaddie) visits inmate Terence Bailey who wants her to bring Rachel to see him. What is going on? Why would an influencer visit Terence and why does he want Rachel? Even more mysteriously, it seems that Maddison has now disappeared and so SA Joe Martinez asks for Rachel’s help in tracking her down. Using a lapsed Instagram account, Rachel goes undercover to BuzzCon, an influencer conference at Daytona. What Rachel discovers there demonstrates that the scariest monsters frequently hide in plain sight whilst further danger lurks in dark corners.

What do I think of Rachel? I can’t decide if she’s gutsy and brave or simply headstrong as her risky behaviour suggests. There are definitely times when you want to ask her what on earth she’s doing as she ploughs into a hornets nest! However, maybe Agent Martinez can rein her in a bit!

Rachel enters the orbit of the influencer (yawn) in this follow up to The Night Swim. What a toxic and narcissistic world we have portrayed here, probably no huge surprise as oodles of money can be made. As Rachel delves into Maddison’s world it becomes apparent there is great danger with the potential of a serial killer in operation. Everywhere she looks the symbol of the Ouroboros (snake/infinity) is present- what does this signify in terms of the investigation?? I really like this part of the storytelling as it lends a real air of the mysterious.

Whilst I think this is a good novel and it does keep me invested and engaged, it seems a bit messy and confusing at the start as the various plot strands are connected. That settles down and the book picks up and becomes a page turner. I don’t think this follow up is as exciting as the first in the series as parts of it are not especially difficult to work out. There is tension and suspense especially as the conclusion of the novel nears and one aspect that makes me happy for Rachel!

Overall, despite a few niggles, I do enjoy the book and I’m looking forward to reading what happens to Rachel next.

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Canelo for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

This is the second outing for Megan Goldin's character Rachel Krall, a crime podcaster who solved an unusual case in her first appearance in Night Swim. That was a gripping story so I was very interested to read the second instalment, which did not disappoint.

An influential podcaster named Madison Sloan has gone missing, and after hitting a wall in the investigation, the FBI approaches Rachel to help with their enquiries. But the prospect is not without its dangers for Rachel herself.

Because before Madison went missing, she visited a notorious criminal in prison for reasons unknown to the authorities. Initial findings since then have established that very little is known about Madison beyond the fact that she has an enormous following on social media. So what business did she have with Terence Bailey?

The mystery continues when it comes to the prison visit. Bailey is due to be released for a series of break-ins but the police believe that he is responsible for a number of murders as well. He is implicated in the deaths of no less than six women.

When a body with a distinctive tattoo turns up, it leads to two possible conclusions, both disturbing. Firstly, Bailey may have an accomplice on the outside. Secondly, he may also have an obsession with social media influencers. This puts Rachel firmly in his cross hairs.

To find out the real story, Rachel goes undercover at Buzzcon, a gathering of social media influencers. What she discovers is that in in the cutthroat media world, it could just as easily be one of Madison's peers who were responsible for her disappearance as a career criminal like Bailey...

This is another excellent read, allowing readers access to the darker corners of the internet as Rachel works against the clock to try and identify those responsible in the case. In Rachel Krall, Goldin has created a fascinating and flawed character, who is nevertheless oddly relatable. I look forward to seeing more of her in future offerings from this author.
