Okay, wow! I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved the changing viewpoints and the twists that came with each new perspective. I really thought the storyline was just soooo obvious but I was soooo wrong. This is not your average thriller. This was a page turner filled with deception, drama, lust, & greed. Everyone had their own agenda and it took us somewhere I never saw coming. Solid 4 stars!
Gripping and heartbreaking with an undercurrent of unease running through it. Half can’t bear to read/half can’t bear to put it down. It’s marvellous - so tautly plotted and don’t see the twists coming! Will be a smash hit!
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review. Hugh and Juliet Mullen reside in the beautiful family estate of Mullens End and they are the envy of all that know them. Each year they throw a lavish party at the estate and it is the talk of the town. However, this year a stranger knocks at their door and when she introduces herself as Alexis, Hugh’s long lost cousin things at the Estate start to take a dramatic turn. We learn very early in the story that Mullens End is an Estate that can only pass down to members of the Mullen bloodline and as Hugh and Juliet could not have any children of their own, this long lost relative is the only living survivor of the Mullen family who would be the next in line to inherit Mullens End. This could only occur when Hugh passes away but at 35 years of age, that wouldn’t be for a very long time……or would it? I really liked this twisty psychological thriller and it kept me wanting to read to find out how this would all unfold….Enjoy!!
Alright, I really liked this one. The premise was a little improbable but the wonderful storytelling made this a unique and interesting thriller. I think my favorite thing about this book was the author's use of multiple povs. This is told through four different perspectives and each one was really well done. This was not a typical thriller, more like a psychological suspense with a murder mystery aspect. I really enjoyed witnessing the entertaining drama unfold between characters. I recommend this one for fans of slow paced thrillers, family drama, and murder mysteries with a twist.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely loved this narrator. She was able to make her voice fit the charaxter. I was fully engaged throughout with a high quality audio. The story itself is told in parts each part is one of the main characters pov. On the same timeline. The story and plot flowed well and the twists and turns were fully engaging as this format allowed individual perception on the same thing.
The story was well paced andcwas a fairly quick listen. I would highly recommend this its a 5 star lisyen for me. Thank you netgallery and publisher and author and narrator.
I binged this in one day so you could say I enjoyed it. It had me hooked and normally I listen to audiobooks for a couple hours a day at work but this one had me binging it in car rides and at home.
I enjoyed the multiple povs throughout the story. It was both engaging and keeps your attention super well. Something’s were rather predictable but I was still pleasantly surprised at the twists. I did question some parts on the believability of it but still didn’t mind it. It was crazy but not so out there it put me off from the story.
The narrator for the audiobook does a great job especially when voicing the other povs. She puts on a slight accent for certain characters which was super nice when differentiating.
For the most part I really hated all the characters especially the other povs besides Juliet. Hugh was utterly insufferable along with Alexis. I absolutely despised them both especially how they treated Juliet. My girl deserved better. The epilogue was a cherry on top for this book, the last line absolutely perfect and fitting.
OK and interesting. Characters were all unlikable, but I kinda thought that was smart because there was no one that deserved anything more than the other. I liked all the little twists, but didn't think they were completely life changing to the story. Nothing really surprised me or made everything make sense. I feel like it was just a bunch of events that were supposed to explain things but really didn't and didn't add up to anything; hence the lower rating. Overall, I think it's an ok read. I don't know if I would remember it to recommend it, but it was an ok read.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for the arc.
Wow so many twists and turns in this multi perspective thriller!
I let her into my home. And now she’s destroying my life…
I open the creaking oak front door of my beautiful country house to see a stranger on my doorstep. The woman is stunning with glossy red hair and flawless make up. ‘Can I help you?’ I ask.
That was my first mistake.
Alexis tells me she is a distant relative and shows me a DNA match on her phone. She has no family and would love to get to know us. My husband Hugh invites her in to join our dinner party. As we drink wine, she opens up about her sad childhood. Her amber eyes are mesmerizing and I can see my husband is being drawn in by her story. Then she asks for our help.
Saying yes was the second mistake.
As Alexis and Hugh spend time together, swimming in our luxurious pool and playing tennis in the sunshine, my husband grows distant and the deep cracks in our relationship begin to show. And when our house guest gets me to open up about my marital problems, I start to wonder why she’s really here.
And then I discover a secret about Alexis that makes my blood run cold.
Thank you to Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for the copy of The House Guest by Alison James.
Wow. What a great story! I was sucked in and couldn’t wait to see what happened next. So many twists! I will definitely read more my Alison James!
This was a great suspense thriller.
Hugh and Alexis live in a stately home when they get an unexpected visitor. The visitor is a cousin of Hugh, Alexis who will inherit the house when he dies. Why has she just appeared though and what is her intentions.
I listened to this book and can’t fault the narrator, she did a great job at reading this story and her use of different voices for the characters made it easy to understand and follow. Liked that the story gave different views if the story by all the characters.
Brilliant suspense that will keep you wanting more.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for a copy.
3.5 stars rounded up
This book gave me whiplash. I felt like I was going down one path, slamming on the brakes and making sharp turns because my lanta. This book had so many things happening all at once. Secrets, deceit, treachery, death, twists and turns galore.
I was blessed with the audiobook version of The House Guest. A huge thank you to Bookouture Audio for the incredible opportunity. I enjoyed the narration on this one. Personally, I really enjoyed the accents. I thought that the narrators were clear and concise.
The novel itself was very captivating BUT…. I hated everyone. Every single character in this book was…ummm…. Awful… yeah… awful. They were all terrible people. I wanted them all to have horrible tragedies by the end of the book. 🫠
I'm officially in the read thrillers era and I'm loving it.
This book kept me on the edge with every single chapter. And I was amazed at how twisted was the story. Not one single time I had no idea what was going to happen next or who was going to win from all that was happening in the book.
For most of the book I was wondering who I trust, but secretly praising that Juliet will get her happy ending.
It would be so fun if this book would turn out in a film or something, I would love watching it.
Lastly, I would like to thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for offering an advance copy of the audiobook in exchange for my honest review.
Hugh and Juliet Mullen have the perfect arrangement of riches and lies until a beautiful stranger shows up to their doorstep one evening. Claiming to be a long lost cousin, Alexis Lambert is welcomed into the Mullen home with open arms. It doesn’t take long before the couple begins to regret their naive decision of letting the intruder in and a page turning thriller begins to unfold.
I listened to this psychological thriller as an audiobook and found it to be quite captivating. There was a singular female narrator, but the story is told from three separate point of views, one of which is male. The narrator did a great job trying to differentiate the characters voices from one another, but I did find it difficult to separate them from each other as their stories unfolded.
“The House Guest” was the kind of book that I didn’t want to put down until the very last page. I never knew who I could trust or what was happening next. A must read for any psychological thriller lover.
I very much enjoyed this twisty unputdownable novel. Juliette and Hugh seem to have the perfect life in a beautiful manor until one evening during a dinner party a long lost cousin of Hughs named Alexis shows up at their doorstep with a large silver suitcase. Juliette is a bit put out when Hugh offers her a room to stay in at the manor, but she is polite and accommodates this surprise guest for what she thinks will only be a couple of nights. But when Alexis's stays stretches on into weeks she becomes alarmed. Who is this long lost cousin and what does she really want? The story is told from four of the main characters points of view which is a lot of fun to read what all the characters are really thinking about each other. Very tricky. Highly recommended with lots of plot twists and surprises. Thank you to Net Galley for the opportunity to read/listen to this advanced copy.
3.5 Stars Rounded up to 4! Greed, Lies, and Deception. My first from this author and won’t be the last .
Thanks to NetGalley for the Audiobook ARC!
Thank you Netgalley, Alison James, and Bookouture Audio for the advanced audiobook.! What a fun read to listen to!! Honestly the characters all drove me completely insane and one of the story lines (I don’t want to give anything away) had me cringing but it wasn’t what I thought. Every character got their chance to give their story and it all made sense and came together!! This would be fun as a movie!!!
The House Guest by Alison James, is a solid 4 star read for me. I thought the storyline was unique, a little far fetched but not enough to turn me away. The author really nailed it with telling the story through four povs. This was my favorite part of the book as it kept me engaged throughout. This wasn’t a typical thriller in that fast paced, nail biting, page turning way you would think. It was an entertaining drama full of suspense, with the different perspectives, and rounded out to a nice finish.
Many thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture Audio, and Alison James for an ARC of this publication!!
Thanks to #NetGalley and #BookoutureAudio for the ARC #TheHouseGuest by #AlisonJames. This book told by multiple povs, was very good! There is a lot of deception, adultery, pretending and murder all wrapped up in a great ending.
This is the first audiobook I've ever listened too and thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved being able to know the view points of all the other characters, but the author did a great job of hiding some information from the reader, so it was a surprise near the end. I did find the beginning to be a bit tedious, I found myself checking to see what chapter I was on and being surprised that more mystery/thriller aspects hadn't come out yet.
I did find that I was surprised to find out the ages of Juliette and Hugh, because the lady voicing the audiobook did sound more mature. So to find out the main characters were in their mid 30's , rather then 50-60's. I did find I had to keep reminding myself of their age throughout, and not get distracted by the voice maturity.
Overall, I enjoyed the story and the twist at the end with the Trust agreement and future heirs was a big "Oooooo" moment for me and kind of the cherry on top of Juliette winning the whole plot. I give this 4/5 stars.
Amazing!! Told in several parts through the eyes of four characters, this books is awesome with each viewpoint of the same story.
I highly recommend this unputdownable #psychologicalthriller with shocking twists!
Jan Cramer makes it all the better with her fantastic narration of the audiobook!
