Ich weiß ehrlich gesagt nicht, wie ich dieses Buch bewerten soll, da ich es aufgrund relativ kurzer Ausleihdauer (ohne Verlängerung) nicht lesen konnte.
A Journey Through the Seven Worlds by Johannes Kuenkel was originally written in German. My eARC did not indicate a translator. Unfortunately, I suspect some of the problems (though certainly not all) with this book stem from a sub-par translation. Here are some examples of odd sentences: "Nick had just caught the ball and was about to run towards the end zone when suddenly the whole memory film that he had never seen before overcame him." ... Memory film? What?
"You've also gotten a lot better through our joint additional training at home."
"Because Ava usually walked around in a leather outfit that reminded one of a shieldmaiden from the Viking era. When she came to school on a motorcycle, one always had the feeling that she was either trying to plunder it or conquer it and although she didn't have an ax with her, it probably wouldn't have surprised anyone at school if she had."
"Eritria was an old lady who seemed confused but tough, she had tousled gray hair and wore strange colorful clothes."
Beyond the clunky language, the book suffers from a lot of telling rather than showing (see: "an old lady who seemed confused but tough"). Characters are one-dimensional.
Thanks to NetGalley for the eARC. All opinions are my own.
I was a big fan of the Percy Jackson universe, and picked up this book as I thought I would enjoy it just the same.
While I did enjoy aspects of this book, I found it hard to get into and the pacing to be a bit off. I found it to be overly predictable, and I found that certain aspects needed to be fleshed out more. While I still think there is potential for the rest of the series - this one just did not do it for me.
Thank you to NetGalley + the publisher for the opportunity to review this book.
I was very excited at the potential of this book when reading the given description, but I ended up being a bit disappointed. The writing isn’t the best, the story jumps around and things just happen..so easily with no build up. There’s not much character building and one of the characters (Eritrea) are just always mean for no reason. I really had to force myself to keep reading so I could give an honest review but I couldn’t continue from Page 62. Shelved as DNF
I decided to read this book because the description was interesting and the cover was very eye-catching. This is a really short book, it nearly is 90 pages long, about a boy who after his parents death finds out he is the heir of some great power in another universe ruled by "unsurs", immortals that control the 4 elements.
In this book I've found positive aspects and negative ones. Regarding the positive things, the book was short. I'm used to reading very long books, so the length of this one has been something that got me int reading it. As well, because of its short length the book was really fast paced. And the thing I've liked the most was the worlds, despite the quick world building, I've found the unsur stuff quite interesting and original.
But, some of these positive things have made me dislike the book as well in some aspects. The book was fast paced, as I've said before, but it was so fast paced that sometimes it felt rushed. Take the final battle as an example, it nearly was 7 pages long, but well we can't expect anything else of a book this short. What's more, I felt the plot quite predictable and knew what was going to happen since the very beginning. I think the book is so predictable because it has a lot of cliches, such as the orphan boy who's the chosen for a great task.
Overall, I've not disliked the book, but it is just a story to entertain yourself in between long books. If there's a second part I don't know if I wold read it, but who knows.
Thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publisher, for giving me the opportunity to read this book!
