If you're a fan of grumpy man and chirpy, calm woman and that trope, then this is an ideal book for you! As the nights are winding in, I found myself quite happy to curl up and join Penny and the family in their Christmas antics. It felt quite cosy, with good christmassy vibes throughout the book which gave it a warm atmosphere.
There are quite a few characters in this book but they all have such a well thought out part in the storyline that it doesn't get confusing, and you create a connection to each of them.
I felt like one of the family whilst reading the book and honestly, I just wished my Christmas celebrations were a little more like this!
After Penny’s boyfriend Timothy breaks up with her after being together for ten years, Penny realizes she’s at a crossroad. She decides to help a family at Christmas and watch their twins. You will love the quirky family characters. This was a fun Christmas read. Thank you to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for the
E-ARC. This is my own opinion.
For me, it’s never too early for festive fun, so I was excited to dive into ‘Christmas With The Lords’, the debut novel from Hannah Langdon.
The story begins with Penny deciding to embark on an adventure and stop trying to be “sensible” following her boyfriend Timothy’s unceremonious ending of their ten-year relationship. As a schoolteacher in term time, Penny has three weeks without obligations over Christmas and New Year (note to teachers: since some of my best friends teach, I know “holidays” aren’t quite the holiday they are made out to be with marking, lesson planning, etc. but Penny seems to figure that out). She decides to take a “mother’s help” job in Dorset and throughout the story she gets to know the large and eclectic Lord family as well as finding out new things about herself.
I liked:
- The family were varied and wonderful: kind but stressed mother Bunny, the cutest and most sincere (but also naughty) twins Seraphina and Caspian, fun-loving grandad William, financier extraordinaire Xander and of course grumpy-but-gorgeous Lando who owns the property but prefers the seclusion of his woodwork studio
- Festive vibes and heartwarming memories were in abundance throughout the narrative, from tree decoration to sledges
- The plotlines were woven very well - though I cared most about finding out about Lando’s past and Penny’s future plans, I was also rooting for William in his romantic endeavours and hoping things worked out well for Bunny
- Two very cute dogs!
I was sad when this book ended as I would have liked a bit more time with Penny and Lando - I felt like I knew the characters so well by the end and it would have been lovely to spend more time with the HEA.
If you’re looking for a cosy, comedic, Christmassy tale set in a grand country house, pick this one up when it releases on 9th November 2023!

thanks so much to netgalley and storm publishing for the arc
i really really enjoyed this book. it was so utterly christmassy and cosy, that i’m counting down til december now and i so wish i had my own adorable phina and caspy!! i loved all the characters, especially bunny, and william was hilarious. while i loved everything about the story itself, it did feel a little like the romance kind of came out of nowhere and like it was insta love. there wasn’t nearly enough interaction with lando and penny, but despite this, i very much enjoyed the book and will defo pick up a paperback!!
3.5/4 stars
This is an entertaining, fun read. Lando and Penny are interesting, intriguing, relatable characters. I enjoyed the on-page interaction between the main characters and wanted more of those scenes and more from the romance. The various secondary characters added to the fabric of the story. They are various and quirky which added to the fun – especially the children. The story is a good holiday read.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
An enjoyable escapist Christmas novel. The set up in Dorset is a familiar one. The quirky, somewhat selfish family who have such an influence on the heroine’s journey to self awareness and independence.
I found the heroine’s 10 year relationship while she waited for the awful boyfriend to decide he wanted to marry her, really unbelievable and annoying. It didn’t show the heroine in a good light. Similarly the hero’s awful ex was so one dimensional as to be impossible to believe in.
Well written with some nice touches.
A treat with great Christmas vibes. The Lord's are fabulous characters as is Penny. I lovely love story.
A wonderfully warm and cosy Christmas read. Who wouldn't want to spend Christmas in such an amazing house with a dysfunctional but interesting family. Just what you need to help you get into the Christmas spirit.
Christmas with the Lords is a sweet, Christmas romcom with a fun grumpy x sunshine, small town romance.
Penny is recently single after being dumped by her boyfriend of 10 years just before the holiday season, so she doesn't get her hopes up of a proposal again. At the suggestion of her friend, Penny decides to leave for the holiday and spend time taking care of four-year-old twins in a small town for their slightly eccentric mother, Bunny. The whole family is there, including recluse Uncle Lando, who spends his days woodworking after a severe breakdown.
Both Lando and Penny are planning to leave the country to have a fresh start; could there something new to keep them here?
This was such a sweet story. It focuses a lot on family and has a lot of dynamics with other members of Bunny's family. The twins are delightful, Bunny is having troubles of her own, grandfather William has seen a spark with another local, Uncle Xander is a menace and the cook, Pilar, is a force of her own.
Despite the baggage between Penny and Lando, they are both open minded and willing to move forward with their lives. It is a delightful, mature, slow burn romance with a lot of quaint fun. Perfect for the holidays!
Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for an arc of this one! All opinions are my own.
I would like to thank netgalley and Storm Publishing for a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Enjoyable cosy Christmas romance.
Sweet friends-to-lovers, grumpy/sunshine, small town romance set in the English countryside of Dorset.
After being cruelly dumped by her boyfriend of 10 years and, at 38, facing the prospect of never fulfilling her dream of a husband and children, primary school teacher Penny decides to spend the Christmas holiday taking care of four-year-old twins. Shortly after she arrives, she meets their Uncle Lando, a handsome, grumpy, troubled man who spends his days whittling a nativity set in his studio. Like Penny, he’s running from a life that he thought was what he wanted, but turned out to be soul-destroying. They both have plans to leave what’s familiar and to escape, Penny to an international school position in India and Lando to a secluded cottage in Greece. However, as feelings start to grow and their arrogant, awful exes try to rekindle relationships for selfish reasons, these two insecure but kind souls have to decide if running away will really solve their problems or if they’re willing to risk following their hearts.
Despite the baggage they’re both carrying, Langdon doesn’t allow it to drag down the story. The antics of the eccentric Lord family are funny and endearing, the twins are adorable, and everyone from grandfather William to the twin’s mom Bunny to the surly but caring cook Pilar open their arms and hearts to Penny. If you’re looking for a heartwarming Christmas story that includes chosen family, a quaint English village, and a mature, slow burn romance, this is it!
I received a complimentary ARC of this book from Storm Publishing through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
What a perfect Christmas read!
I've always loved "Hallmark" types Christmassy films, but rarely encountered book versions that were as highly enjoyable as this one. More than cosy feelings and longings for hot chocolates and cookies, it's the laugh out loud kind of romance and perfect to set you into the Christmas Spirit.
It reads as a British play, somehow, with a nice pace and funny dialogues. I was hooked!
Once again, I am reading and reviewing a Christmas novel. This was freaking funny, the family was batshit crazy and I'm obsessed. This really was a heartwarming and feel-good holiday story full of Christmas magic!
Well this absolutely does what it says on the tin. A warm and fuzzy feel good romance set in beautiful Dorset. I liked how stuck in penny got to life with the Lords and they were all so friendly and welcoming which added to the convivial feeling of the story. The slow burn of Lando and Penny’s friendship was written well and whilst throwing in both exes who suddenly stay there and then disappear in a flash was a bit ott, the overall story was strong. (Though I’d want to walk out if someone called me pixie within minutes of meeting me!!)
A feel good read that I raced through with enjoyment.
This is a warm, lively and very fun review featuring Penny who is considering uprooting her life to move to India after her boyfriend of ten years ends their relationship. Instead of spending Christmas moping at home she decides to answer an advert to assist Bunny with her four year old twins whilst they spend Christmas at her brother in laws house amongst a riotous mix of family. The setting is brilliant, the family are both mad and wonderful and this is everything you want in an uplifting read.
This was such a wonderful and enjoyable read!!!! I loved this book and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys this genre. Thank you so much to the publisher and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I loved reading this book. It was a very warm story with many different characters and a lovely setting, so much so that I felt included in the setting and felt that I knew the characters personally as the tale unfolded. There is something for everyone in this book and well worth reading.
The book Christmas with the lords by Hannah Langdon , is such a cute holiday romance story . Penny, one of the main characters leaves a relationship of 10 years to try for a new beginning . She takes a nanny job with the Lords family to help around the house over the holidays . Little did Penny know , she was going to find love. The author did a great job describing the chaotic household . I was really able to get a sense of why Penny was needed . I did feel it took until midway for the story to really start to get juicy. I really did enjoy the book. I highly recommend .
This is just a perfect read. A love story, with very cute children, beautiful food descriptions and a rocky path to find true love. Set in Dorset. I so wanted a hot chocolate and the naivety wood carving sounded amazing. Such a lovely neat ending . Perfect. Read it
