I enjoyed reading this book but was expecting something slightly different to what I got, which definitely impacted my reading experience. This is no fault of the author. It is a book I would keep on hand for thinking about purpose and gratitude. It definitely connects this to how we help one another unlike many books in this space. If the blurb is compelling to you then you should definitely pick it up.
As a child growing up in South Sudan, Jal bore witness to unspeakable atrocities inflicted upon his family and community. The horrors he experienced propelled him into the harrowing role of a child soldier amidst a brutal civil war. His days were plagued by hunger, isolation, and the constant threat of death in the midst of battle. However, the most formidable adversary he faced wasn't external; it emerged from within—the corrosive forces of hopelessness, trauma, and narratives of victimization that threatened to consume him.
The E-Book could be improved and more user-friendly, such as links to the chapters, no significant gaps between words and a cover for the book would be better. It is very document-like instead of a book. A star has been deducted because of this.
This is a first for me by the author and one I enjoyed and I would read more of their work. The book cover is eye-catching and appealing and would spark my interest if in a bookshop. Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for this ARC.
