I want to be as mindful as I can, in light of the fact that I understand that this author has poured himself out on these pages in what feels to him like a very personal way.
But...
Tell me you hate everything about your life without telling me you hate everything about your life. The overall theme of this book is the shortcomings the author believes he has but cannot seem to get over. On every page, you read about how much he doesn't like his job, his physical appearance, his social standing, his personality, etc. In between comments on these areas, there is plenty of bad theology that honestly is not going to help him to overcome any of these things. It is no wonder that he believes the only route forward is a path that includes a good deal of stoicism (which is also bad theology). When what you believe about God isn't helpful, then you necessarily only have the option to submit yourself to whatever and try to be okay with it...even if you just call that whatever "God" and pretend that it's a measure of your faith (it isn't).
I would recommend professional psychotherapy, but I'm not sure, based on the general tone of the book, that the author is ready to get honest and vulnerable enough to reap the rewards of that. Sorry. I try not to write harsh reviews, but for me, this review is about more than a book - there is an actual soul that is feeling the pain written on these pages and can't find a viable, soul-edifying way through it. And that is of the utmost importance to me.
To the book, it appears to be self-published, and it appears to not have been very well proof-read. There are numerous basic errors that anyone reading it should pick up on automatically. As one of my college professors used to say, "If YOU aren't willing to read your work, why should I want to?" Simple things, but it would help this book tremendously to have it read through by even a mediocre eye before full publication.
