Very gripping, and you don't need to have read the previous Philip Taiwo book to be able to enjoy. The plot gripped me and Femi Kayode's characterisation was fantastic. I listened to this but think they'd be a great series to read the physical book of too. I'll be reading more of Kayode!
This is a powerful thriller set in Nigeria where a police detective who’s recently moved from the States is called to investigate the disappearance of the wife of a prominent church leader. Very quickly you learn that not all is as it seems, but getting to the truth isn’t straightforward for Detective Philip Taiwo, who’s also managing his family’s transition to living in a new country (which doesn’t come without its own challenges).
I loved the insight it provided into the Nigerian culture, and this was helped by the excellent narration of the audio book.
It’s a well-paced, well-structured story which pulls you in, with plenty of colourful characters who’ll keep you guessing.
This is the second Philip Taiwo book, And while I haven’t read the first, I didn’t find this an issue as the story reads perfectly well as a standalone.
With big thanks to Bloomsbury U.K. audio and NetGalley for the chance to listen to an ARC.
Received an Eaduiobook copy via NetGalley
A terrific crime thriller set in Lagos by Kayode.
Really taken with the setting (not read many Nigerian crime novels).
The second Philip Taiwo novel and i'm eagerly awaiting the third!
Gaslight by Femi Kayode and narrated by Cary Hite and Yinka Ladeinde is the second book in the Philip Taiwo investigation series and I have a confession, I have not read the first one! Oops. I found it a slow read and hard to get into - only because I hadn't read the first one!!! However, once I got into it I really enjoyed this audiobook.
The characters were well developed and played well within the story.
This is a book or audiobook that you have to read the first book to really get the whole story.
Big Thank you to Netgalley and Bloomsbury Publishing Plc (UK & ANZ), Raven Books for my audiobook/book.
The quality of this narration was superb . It engorged me deeply in both the story and the characters. Multiple narrators gave it substance and made a compelling listen.
The plot starts off as a simple missing person enquiry and becomes so much more. Alongside the msin characters family ajusting in life in nigeria where they face different types of racism from their own. Colour.
I felt the tension and emotion in hhis cimpelling lusten. It was a slow burner whichbwas full of teists and turned dark. The final book was so dark. Althoughba work if giction yhis felt it could be true.
Thank yoy netgallery and publisher and author and narrators for a highly recommended 5 star listen. It felt a long listen bit so worth while.
Gaslight by Femi Kayode is the second in the Philip Taiwo series, I read the first book but listened to this second book in the series. The narration brought the book to life because I could hear what people’s names and place names sounded like.
This time the family have moved to Nigeria. Philip is asked to solve a missing person case at the mega church in Ogun state.
Murder, fraud and kidnapping are all investigated in this story. It is only when the body of First Lady is discovered that the investigation takes on another level.
An interesting storyline brought to life by the narration.
Highly recommended
