Want to thank Netgalley and publishers for giving me the chance to read this book.
I was iffy about this manga but honestly I really enjoyed it. I loved the characters and the balance between comedy and action. The ending of this volume had me wanting some answers. And truthfully? I could see this as an anime.
A review copy of #Rocopon vol. 1 by Chicchi Yukinaga and Nadainishi was kindly provided by #NetGalley
3.75/5*
What use can the first alien to land on Earth have? Chicchi Yukinaga and Nadainishi answer this question in a quirky way that is eerily reminiscent of Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata's Death Note.
For 8 years, the world population has grown used to Rocopon lazily wandering about in the streets of Tokyo. The general public is thus unaware that he has been secretly working for the Japanese government as a vigilante. Since he is an alien, he cannot legally be accused of murder - a loophole that makes him perfect for the job of "cleaning up the worst of society."
So far it is a heavily plot-based story with a few somewhat twisty vibes playing around. Hopefully, we will be able to unveil some depth of the characters in the future. This is the very first volume of the manga after all and its irreverence does show promising signs.
I was given this ARC by Netgalley, not expecting much but, this book was truly surprising. This book is funny and silly, with very well done artstile. The story is well ploted out and unlike some other just funny mangas this one is actually coherent and isnt just jokes and laughs.
This combined two of my most favourite things: spies, and weirdly shaped creatures.
I had a lot of fun reading this, surprisingly funny and Rocopon is honestly just hilarious to look at. The deadpan jokes are good and Rocopon is snarky as hell. There's a good bit of story too that I'm invested in. Reminded me a lot of Majin Tantei Nōgami Neuro / Neuro: Supernatural Detective if any of you have read/watched that (and if you haven't then please do, it's an absolute fave).
Definitely going to keep my eye out for the next volume!

This was not what I expected going into it, but I enjoyed it a lot! Rocopon is one of those hilarious deadpan jokes types of Manga similar to One Punch Man or The Way of the Househusband, which I absolutely love.
Rocopon is an alien who seemingly hasn't really done anything notable since crashing into planet Earth 8 years previously. Or has he?
Secretly, he's been tasked by the government to use his extraordinary reflexes and superhuman powers to (violently) eradicate criminals. He's really lazy though, and has the attention span of a typical cat. Hilarity ensues when the 2 priorities clash and he's reunited with a character from his early days on Earth who couldn't be more different.
Fun read, definitely recommended if you're into this type of humor and don't mind the occasional graphic violence!
✨ Disclaimer ✨ I received a free copy of this book and this is my honest review.
Rocopon is an action manga that hinges on a mildly funny premise that might have put the canon staples on its head, but One Punch Man it isn’t. I think the author is still a bit too fond of noir righteous assassin aesthetics to truly capitalise on the gag-manga style character design. In fact if Rocopon had a normal guy face you could pretty much read it unironically (take or leave a joke about mercy) which to me is a sign it didn’t really do its homework.
Thanks to NetGalley and Kodansha for a review copy.
Thank you NetGalley for providing me with this arc, in exchange for my honest review.
This started of quite funny. Rocopon is earth’s only alien so when he arrives at Inuta Airport, after taking a trip he wasn’t supposed to take, he thinks a bunch of fans and reporters are there waiting for him. Wrong.. They’re there for someone else.
Rocopon is old news. He crash landed on earth 8 years ago (naked xd and with complete memory loss). He said he wanted to be of service to human kind and they think he just made a lot of promises but did nothing but wander around town, eating and avoiding work.
They were partially right, he is lazy but he’s also been an assassin to “clean up” for the Ministry of Defense. With his supernatural strength and strange but effective abilities, it’s almost too easy for him. But when he’s been assigned an unexpected and familiar partner, starting of on the wrong foot with her and getting harder artificially enhanced targets to kill, his easy days are over and the hardest opponent is yet to come..
Rocopon reminded me of Deadpool but a bit less talkative and more grumpy. That really made it a fun and cool story and much more relaxed than it would have been without him acting that way.
This was a nice entertaining read but not the most memorable.
Very silly looking and is definitely funny but I honestly think this would have been better as a one shot. I definitely enjoyed it but I don't see this building up to anything hat will have a grand story.
