Complex and action-packed hidden world of shifters and magical beings, as the stranger wanders in and finds he may be one of them. No spoiler there. A lot of action scenes, secrets, and somehow physics - surrounded by betrayals, secrets, the conspiracy unfolds with a wide cast of characters and subplots. Definitely have to pay attention!
This book was just eh. It was okay for the most part. The only reason it didn't get less than e stars is the fact that Gregory Haley knows his mythology (although you are constantly reminded who is what species which gets very repetitive).
AJ is former Arny soldier who is walking to National Parks as a promise made to a friend/fellow soldier, when he finds a dead sheriff in the middle of a country road. Once help comes the body is gone and he is taken into town. He ends up in a very strange town with a trio of almost identical women all named Margaret and Skinner a Marine veteran who assures him that things in town aren't like anything he's used to.
Well developed characters but got lost in all the technical science talk and the whiplash effect of big dramatic fight scenes. My brain literally stuttered and couldn't focus so I skipped parts of it. Then it slowed waaaay down so I continued to skip around some. I had hope when it picked up speed again but that lasted on a dozen pages or so. There is a lot of promise but definitely feels like it's Stephen King book when he starts going on and on and on do you skip a page or 2 or 20.
Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to review Stranger in the Valley by Gregory Haley. #StrangerintheValley #NetGalley
I requested this book based on the synopsis - a man who will always fulfil a promises meets a secret, enclosed valley full of mythical creatures .......... what's not to love !!
This is a thoroughly enjoyable , fantasy novel with characters that you will become invested in - with betrayal at the heart , who can be trusted ?.
I look forward to reading more from the Author in the future
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own
One of the most important things for me in a fantasy series is robust world-building, and this book delivers! From the first page, I was drawn into the intermingling of reality and fantasy, with clever, well-thought-out explanations between the two.
I found the overall structure of the book to be captivating -- a sort of Eureka meets Harry Potter structure -- while also capturing the realities of life such as PTSD and the impact that has on the main character. The author clearly left lots of room for the series to grow and I can't wait to read the subsequent books in this series.
From a master storyteller comes a book that has exciting action, mystery, characters that have depth and charisma. An impressive fantasy that takes you on a journey you will never forget!
I feel like I’m not able to find just the right blend of genres in a book lately, and I requested this one with hope. Well, I am glad I did. This was a wonderful story filled with paranormal, real-life problems, and a mystery with so many other things wrapped in. A.J. is a somewhat tortured character because of his past, and he feels quite alone. His journey in this valley makes him so much more than when he started. Add in some engaging plot, captivating action, wonderful characters, and this book is so much more than the words on the page. I fell in love with this place, and I can’t wait to find out more about it in the next installment. More, please. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
