I am a fan of Alice Hunter's previous books so was very excited to jump in Bad Apple. I can tell you right now it certainly did not disappoint. A non stop thrill ride from start to finish, I could not put this one down for more than a few minutes. It was engaging with terrific character development and a gritty story line. Police corruption is always an interesting topic and Bad Apple was no exception. Not knowing who you could trust in this story was a key element to dissecting everyone and everything, and yet I did not work it out until the very last chapter. Put this on your list immediately it is a fantastic book that will keep you reading long into the night.

Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for this early reading copy it is one I will highly recommend.

Fast paced and tight storytelling. This book kept me on the edge of my seat. A woman turns her husband in after she finds out he’s not who she thought he was, but then she has to deal with the fact that he doesn’t get the punishment she thinks he deserved. The twist was really good too. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

I was biting my nails throughout Bad Apple by Alice Hunter. From the opening pages, I was nervous and anxious. What do you do when you know your husband is pure evil on the inside but shows a different side to the world?

Of course you’d go to the police, but what if said husband IS the police? That is the premise for this nerve-wracking book that features a truly horrible man and his ex-wife who doesn’t know where to turn or who she can trust when it comes to the crimes of her ex.

Synopsis:

Trusted officer. Family man. Monster? What would you do if you found out the man you loved was rotten to the core?

Becky Lawson’s life has been shattered. When she discovered her husband, John – a trusted policeman – was a monster, she reported him. But her faith in the system was crushed when it didn’t lead to any charges or consequences.

Now, John lives freely with a new girlfriend and her young daughter, while Becky battles guilt over missing the obvious signs. Determined for justice, Becky hunts him down. But John wants her silenced – at any cost. Becky knows only one of them can survive, and she’ll do anything to make sure it’s her.

Becky must tread carefully though, because John isn’t the only bad apple lurking in the shadows…

This is out now!

Former police detective Becky Lawson was forced to leave Greater Manchester Police after making very serious allegations against her Detective Sergeant husband. There is no firm evidence and he thinks he's got away with his serious crimes. A year later, Becky is living in a flat in a rough area of the city when she hears of John's promotion and receives a letter warning her to leave him alone. Outraged, she springs into detective mode, determined not to let him win this time. She knows he must have wrecked other women's lives. Tracking him down, pursuing evidence, helped by the only two friends she has left on the police force, Becky feels she is losing her mind. Not everything is as it seems and there is a shocking twist at the end. #netgalley #BadApple

I wasn’t sure when I began this book if I would like it. But it quickly caught me. You follow this down on her luck ex cop and her journey to expose her ex husband. I think you can kind of guess where it’s going but there’s so many details you want to figure out that you have to keep chugging along. There was a good amount of character development and the main character is lovable and you feel for her. I do feel that banter is choppy and there’s some very abrupt transitions but overall the plot and storyline were solid. All lose ends are wrapped up and I think most would be pleased with the ending. I would definitely recommend this book to a friend. And read another book by this author

The story line has a clear division between the early days of Becky and John's relationship and after she reports him for criminal acts. While the plot is not unique, Alice Hunter's Becky definitely is unique in her steadfast belief that her husband deserves arrest and punishment. There are several twists as Becky runs into resistance in places you'd expect her to have support. A good, solid story with an ending that makes the punishment fit the crime.

✨Fast paced
✨Psychological Thriller
✨ Betrayal and courage

✨As Becky was out of placed when she finds out her husband who is not what she thinks. Finding out that he is a monster, and leaving freely because he is a policeman.
✨this book actually to show how f* our system is aswell even in fiction it’s been applied🫣
✨ I thought the book will be similar to a case of “finding out who’s the monster “but the book actually written differently . Even though I expected the ending, it end differently and worth the read.

✨ Thankyou #netgalley, #avonbooks and #alice Hunter for the arc copy of this book for a honest review.

Review of "Bad Apple" by Alice Hunter

3 ⭐️

This thriller reads very fast and I sure had a good time reading a story about someone hunting the perp, with us as reader already knowing who that is. I thought there were definitely some good twists and turns in it, although I did guess the final twist quite early on in the book. That being said, not your typical whodunnit, but something a bit different. I had a good time.

What do you do when the people meant to protect you are the ones breaking the law? When Becky Lawson finds a burner phone and messages that implicate her husband in a series of rapes, she blows the whistle. Unfortunately a lack of evidence means there’s nothing to support her claims and she ends up leaving the force.
But she’s not given up.
When, some time later, she receives news of her ex’s upcoming promotion she decides it’s time to try again. She enlists the (begrudging) help of a couple of ex-colleagues and tries to reach out to her ex’s new partner. Things don’t go quite to plan and it seems his reach is further than she ever thought possible.
The story might seem improbable, but the topic is one that you can’t help but be caught up in. There’s a few surprises in store, and not everything is neatly resolved by the end, but there’s enough to keep you satisfied that some elements of the story are tied up.
Thanks to NetGalley for giving me the chance to read and review this.

Thank you for the opportunity to preview Bad Apple.
This is a psychological drama about a woman with nothing to lose. She’ lost every.
Becky’s ex husband is a cop who she finds out is not who she thought he was. She is scared.
He will stop at nothing to make sure Becky is destroyed. He’s a bad man. And he wants revenge bad!!

This was yet another book that missed the mark for me. The blurb was engaging, Chapter 1 & 2 were captivating and from there it was a free fall to a snoozefest. I cannot begin to describe how annoying Becky was. And it was almost as if she was fighting a ghost. Where was John in the story - other than in the beginning and the end? All those times Becky claims that this was the work of John or that was the act of John, she actually does seem delusional because there is no sign of John. I don't know if this was the author's intent or if the story was missing a second POV. But it felt like Becky just kept chasing her tail in circles. I loved 'The Serial Killer's Wife' by this author. Unfortunately this book was a disappointment.

"Bad Apple" follows Becky, who discovered that her cop husband has committed an atrocious crime and when she reports him to the authorities, they turn a blind eye. Instead, her life begins to fall apart while he moves on with his life as if nothing ever happened. Becky decides that to get justice she must take things into her own hands.

The book does tackle some difficult topics so TW for SA and cops abusing their power.
Now, this book is written nicely... however, I did find it began to get a bit repetitive at times. It is a quick paced book so easy to read within an afternoon. Just keep in mind that there is less showing and a lot of telling within the book which got frustrating at times.

While reading it though, the plot felt quite unrealistic. I understand it's a book however most of the time there has to be some element of how the world actually works within it.

Maybe this book was just not for me, but I was quite disappointed since the premise had so much potential.

2.5 Stars rounded up to 3.

Becky life is in ruins her policeman husband was a monster abusing his power so she reported him but things don't go her way when he gets away with it and she loses her job. Determined to bring him to justice she tries to gather the evidence needed to bring him down. He is onto her and will stop at nothing to shut her up. Becky doesn't realise just how much danger she is in.

This book pulled me in right from the start. It was a easy to read fast paced thriller with some shocking twists and an ending I didn't see coming. Will definitely be looking to read more from this author.

I found Bad Apple to be an OK read. I struggled to get into it as it was quite slow and drawn out so it did not grip me as I expected it to. The idea for the book is quite current with things that have happened within the police force in the last few years but unfortunately it just didn't work for me.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for my ARC.

It’s got all the traits of a thriller that I love, genuinely creepy at parts, unreliable narrators, a lots of information peppered throughout to keep me guessing the whole way through. I think this would be a brilliant book to read in one sitting. I found it dragged slightly in the middle, and reading it over a few days meant that I found some of Becky’s narration a bit repetitive.

There were also some moments of the story that felt slightly convoluted and added in for no reason, such as her relationship with Elijah and meeting Isabel, they didn’t add much to the plot and I felt like Becky would’ve reached her own conclusions with or without them. I also felt the ending was slightly rushed, and the open ended-ness was unsatisfying for me, but that’s just because I generally like books that tie things up a bit more.

Saying all that though, this book was generally addictive and fast paced, it would be a great book to read over a weekend or on holiday. For me, nothing stood out enough for it to stand apart from a lot of other thrillers I’ve read before.

TW: the book centres around sexual assault and rape so I’d approach with caution if that’s triggering for you

Bad Apple is another twisty thriller by Alice Hunter that didn’t disappoint.
Becky is married to John when we first meet them, they are both in the police, John is a trusted detective that the force love but one evening at home Becky finds something that makes John anything but her loveable husband. Becky reports him but there are others that have covered for him so he can carry on with his awful crimes against women. After failing to provide enough evidence John is given a promotion and Becky finds he is already set up with another woman, her battle to bring justice to these women doesn’t stop and she does everything in her power to get evidence even if John is one step ahead of her every time.
This was a fast read for me, I found I couldn’t put it down as I rooted for Becky, there were some decent twists in it and the ending left no unanswered questions. The storyline hit me from the start and I liked Becky’s resilience, making her character likeable and believable.
I would like to thank NetGalley and Avon Books UK for this ARC I received in exchange for an honest review.
