I think this novel came into my life at the perfect moment. It is quiet and not much happens, but I related to it so, so much. It felt like a cup of tea at the end of a long and hectic day. We follow Mira, a woman in her late forties, during the weeks following her dad's spine surgery. She has a brother, who I'm pretty sure is younger than her, but he's not around, so like many older sisters, she has taken on the responsibility of caring for her parents, especially her dad, with whom she's closest.

This is very character-driven, so if you're not into that, you might find it slow, probably boring, and like nothing really happens. And, yes, it is all those things, but it was also an opportunity for me to pause and look at my life and my mom's life. It is a small treasure, and I hope more people get to read it and relate to it as much as I did.

I received this book as a complimentary digital ARC from Net Galley and Post Hill Publishers. This is a beautiful story of a few months in the life of a family. The book centers around Matthew, 79 years old and his daughter, Mira. The love that Mira has for her father is obvious. Her father is disabled, has been most of his life. The book begins in a hospital room where Matthew has had another surgery, not very successfully. Dana, the mother is also in the book, but largely ignored until the end. The author brought a deep faith into the story and this became a book about hope and faith. The book could be described as a character study, but also a book about the greatness of God. This book was well written. I enjoyed it. I read it in one afternoon. Just a very easy and restful read.

Everything is a Little Broken is a very quick read at under 200 pages. It gives a brief look at aging and how it affects the individual going through it and also their love ones.

Mira is in her 40's and trying to help her parents; her dad was injured decades earlier and has struggled with movement most of Mira's life but when he has to have another surgery and loses some of his use of his arms, it is a blow to what independence he had. They are also dealing with the decline of Mae, an elderly Black woman who had been Mira's and her father's nanny. She was truly part of the family and Mira and her parents are having a hard time with her faltering health.

There is some humor in the book because that is the character of Mira's dad....make a joke to deal with problems. But, most of the book is pretty sad. I liked Mira and her dad but never felt like I got to know her mom well, due to a lack of relationship between her and her daughter. Mira's brother is also a part of the story but he is almost estranged from his father and we never find out why. That was a big question I really would have liked an answer to.

Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.

I wanted to like this book even though I knew it would be a tough read but the character development was so poor that I just couldn’t care about anyone let alone their stories.

Everything Is a Little Broken

Aging is hard, but watching those you love get older isn’t much easier.
I felt that life was a little broken. Almost a huge amount of broken. It is hard, but you fight.
