I really enjoyed this! It was a fun and cosy read, and I loved the focus on community and friendship. It reminded me a lot of books by Libby Page and Clare Pooley, some of my favourite authors, so I’d definitely recommend it to fans of those authors. I’ll be keeping an eye out for more books from Lauren in the future, and I won’t lie, reading this has really made me want to go to a trivia night, too! (I would be awful, so that’s probably not a good idea!)
Meet the Red Hot Quizzy Peppers - Donna, Bryony, Jaime, Luke and Harry. With special appearance from Glen.
Donna places an ad for members to join her pub quiz team. All the respondents are trying to fill a void in their lives and don't expect much. But to their surprise, they're actually a good team.
A tentative friendship develops but as each character opens up about their personal struggles, they form a bond that will warm your heart.
I loved the trivia questions at the start of each chapter, a cute touch I thought. A really lovely, quirky and properly cute story with beautiful characters that made me smile throughout.
I absolutely loved this book! I liked all the characters and enjoyed finding out about them. It is so well written and the plot flowed easily. I’d love to have stayed longer with them, I didn’t want the book to end. Definitely recommend this book, and will be looking out for more from Lauren. Thank you #netgalley
I really liked the idea of this book, a group of 5 strangers meet and start up a quiz group in the local pub. Sadly, I just couldn't connect with the characters at all, they just seemed miserable. Every new person we met just made me feel more depressed. And Donna was so rude and just OTT. The only saving grace was the trivia shown at the top of each chapter was really interesting and kept me turning the pages. And also the quiz questions features throughout the book. Hopefully I will remember some of them!
This book just wansn't for me. I did like the wiring style and certain bits were funny. I also enjoyed the mention of the Lake District as I like locally. I would red mother book by the author in the fixture.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for giving me a ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
What a heartwarming read this was! Honestly, I wasn’t expecting anything when I requested this book— I liked the name, the cover and the synopsis. But when I started reading it, I definitely had a smile on my face!
The writing was great— as an aspiring author myself, I find multiple POVs so challenging; the voice of the characters has to shine through or they’re all going to sound the same. But I think this book tackled it really well.
I also really enjoyed the trivia questions :)
This is a wonderful and light-hearted book for those that enjoy reading about wholesome, unlikely friendships!
I really enjoyed reading The Lonely Hearts’ Quiz League. I found the characters well-developed and mostly likeable, despite being flawed. It did take me a little while to settle into the story, just because there was a large cast, but once I did I found it a fun, heartwarming read. Overall great writing and a great plot. Would definitely recommend for lovers of commercial fiction
I love a good quiz so put it into a book and I’m enjoying already! Lovely romance holiday read. Super easy to read so ideal for holidays.
This was a simple, fun, easy and quick read. The perfect type of book for your holiday, beach, pool kind of read. This is a first for me by the author and one I enjoyed and I would read more of their work. The book cover is eye-catching and appealing and would spark my interest if in a bookshop. Thank you very much to the author, publisher and Netgalley for this ARC.
3.5/5.

It takes courage to join a random group of people for a quiz night. But for these brave souls this is a decision that will have a ripple effect on more than just a tournament but on their futures.
This was a pleasant read with a cast of characters that are enjoyable and at various points will have the reader either giggling away at their awkward interactions or on the verge of tears due to the way their lives are upended. However, at the heart of the story is the friendships that are created along the way, and you can’t go wrong with an uplifting tale to cosy up to.
If you are after a light-hearted read that has just the right level of substance, this book is for you. A group of people looking for meaning in their lives join together to form a quiz team at the local pub. What ensues is a little bit of hilarity, a little bit of pain, some self-realisation and a whole lot of fun.
Interesting book. Grabbed me from the first page. Look forward to reading more by this author in the future.
Five strangers join forces to create The Red Hot Quizzy Peppers team at their local pub quiz and they are quickly firm friends, learning more about each other as the weeks go on. This is a light-hearted and easy going read, perfect for a summer holiday getaway. Some of the characters are more likable than others, but you can't help wanting the best for all of them.
When five strangers decide to join forces to win a big pub quiz tournament, you can only expect a whirlwind of a journey.
While reading you get to embark on a journey of self-development and blossoming friendship between all the characters. While it has moments of humour, there can also be some moments that may not agree with everyone, as well as characters that take a while to warm up to.
Five strangers all join a quiz league team. All have their own personal issues, can quizzing help them sort them out? an enjoyable read. I loved the questions at the beginning of each chapter.
Five strangers brought together by one advert for a quiz team. Five people with very little in common other than they have life problems. But something about this quintet makes them a quizzing force to be reckoned with – can they go all the way to the final of the Quiz League?
The story switches between the different characters so they become more than characters. I felt like I knew them intimately quite quickly but with each chapter that I spent with them, I knew that little bit more. They threw me a few surprises, especially Donna!
Farnsworth brought her characters to life. They’re all people with problems, problems that I’m sure we all know someone who has been there at some point. But Farnsworth handles these problems perfectly, I felt for my new friends. I wanted to hug them most of the time – Harry and Jaime both needed a slap to bring them to their senses.
The Lonely Heart Quiz League is a very entertaining read about five individuals brought together in the name of fun and quizzing. They all go on their own journey but together they are a team. I really enjoyed getting to know The Red Hot Quizzy Peppers (yes that’s their team name). I will be keeping my eye peeled for more from Lauren Farnsworth!
I loved the synopsis, I love a good quiz and I'm a sucker for romance!
I admit it did take a little time to warm to all of the characters but soon I was willing for their happy endings and triumph in the quiz!
A great debut novel, so well written and engaging, like so many adults I always wonder how we're meant to make new friends outside of work and this was a great tale of people doing just that.
I’ve really struggled to read this book even though it’s a good book. The character of Donna is so well written but I don’t like her. She annoys me every time she’s in the story. I almost didn’t finish the book but I’m glad I did, it just took a while!
The story itself is ok, well written with other likeable characters. This just wasn’t a book I couldn’t wait to keep reading.
This story follows five strangers who get together to enter a weekly pub quiz and decide to enter into the London Pub Quiz Tournament which could see them win £10,000 between them. It follows their lives over the course of the 6 months or so the tournament is running.
I didn't particularly like any of the characters and I don't feel any of them really had any personal growth, except maybe Donna who finally admitted she needed help to manage the Bipolar Disorder she was diagnosed with after an accident/suicide attempt - we don't know for sure what it was. The rest of the characters were annoying and whiney most of the time. All of them were in unhappy situations whether with their jobs or relationships but none of them really did anything to fix things or make things better for themselves, they just moaned about it constantly.
While I can see what the author was going for by telling each person's story through their own third-person narrative, it was not done in a coherent way and it was all over the place, switching from one character to another without anything in between.
Thanks to NetGalley and Headline for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.
This is a light hearted book about 4 lonely people who join Donna’s advert to become a pub quiz team. Not only do they learn for their team events, but they learn about themselves and their relationships with others.
An enjoyable holiday read.
DNF at 47%.
I really tried with this, but after seven months and at nearly halfway through I've got to say I just don't feel any sympathy for any of the characters. They are all deluded or just plain stupid and I can't bear to read them making bad decisions or setting themselves up for failure, I can see where it is all going and it doesn't end well.
Not for me.
I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley.
