Thank you Bookouture Audio for allowing me to read and review My Husband's Lies (An utterly gripping psychological thriller with a jaw-dropping twist) by Liz Lawler on NetGalley.

Published: 11/20/23

Narrator: Gabrielle Nellis-Pain

Stars: 3

This is a typical mystery/thriller; it was okay. The ending, however, was too much and had me eye rolling and wanting to just turn the book off. Cheesy is an understatement. For those who read this genre there will be no surprises, and that is where my disappointment won out. Sadly, the author had several options that I thought of and she chose to take the antiquated road.

There is profanity, unnecessarily.

There are the marital discord, best friend interference, and dumbing down of higher educated persons (This is where I do my best Nancy Kerrigan impression -- Why? Why? Why?) tropes. I will give credit to the author for writing the smart mom (Grace).

The narrator was good and that helped.

My Husbands's Lies is the first book I've read from Liz Lawler and the book started really well. Kate who is a Doctor find that her husband, Mark has been grounded from flight as a pilot impending an investigation. From this point onwards, Kate life is thrown into disarray as she tries to untangle, what people keep telling her. This leads Kate not only relying on her Mum but also Marks best friend, Robert and a co worker Olivia.

There was a few twists and turns throughout the book and what I do believe a fair bit of manipulation and gaslighting. This can lead the most rational, level headed person into making some naive decision making. I feel that Liz succeeded into doing this through the narrative and I can also get why people may or may not connect with that side of Kate.

This book raised a lot of emotion's for me, which, for me, is the whole purpose of nook reading! Thank you Netgalley and Liz Lawler for this ARC and ill definitely be reading more of your books

My Husband's Lies is a read for fans of psychological thrillers. Liz Lawler effectively blends suspense, emotional intensity, and unexpected twists to create a story that keeps readers hooked until the last page. While some plot elements may feel familiar to avid thriller readers, the novel's engaging characters and gripping storyline make it a worthwhile addition to the genre. This book is perfect for those looking for a tense and thought-provoking read that delves into the dark side of marital secrets.

Kate and Mark seem to have a perfect life. She is a Doctor, he is an airline pilot and they have a beautiful son. When the police knock on the door asking to speak to Mark, Kate thinks it must be a misunderstanding. A woman has been murdered and a witness saw her with Mark. As the plot unfolds and secrets are revealed, you don’t know who to believe.
I found this to be slow paced and completely unbelievable at times. If you are happy to take the storyline with a pinch of salt, you may enjoy this escapist novel.

Kate is a doctor. Mark a pilot. There has been a murder in Barcelona. Mark knew the victim and is now being questioned about the murder.
Someone has run Mark over with a car. He is now in a coma
Robert, Mark's best friend, seems to be hiding something. He is in love with Kate. Kate only sees him as a friend.
Even when Mark awakes, it still seems like he is hiding something
Someone knows her murdered the woman in Barcelona, but no one is saying anything
I really couldn't figure out a plot or any interesting facts about this book. It's a bit of a bore 😴

This book pulled me in from the beginning, and I found that I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. The book opened with a bang, so I knew I would be in for a great ride. This book was full of lies, twists, and turns. As I turned the pages, I was unsure what would happen next. The ending was completely unexpected and such a wild ride! Overall, My Husband’s Lies was a great domestic thriller full of secrets, lies, and gripping suspense. This is my first book by this author, but it definitely won’t be the last.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for an ARC in exchange for my honest and voluntary review.

I listened to the audiobook from NetGalley, and I have one comment about the audiobook, which is the way the narrator says “police”, which I find very funny and almost always took me out of the story.

That being said, both the book and its narration were very pleasant. I have a couple of doubts about the pacing as it felt a bit weird at times but it might have been intentional as overall this read like a psychological thriller.
In any way, the plot was creative and I was constantly trying to figure out how it would end, changing my mind after every new fact came out.

Is it the book of your life, no, but it wasn’t wasted time at all.

I was hooked from the very beginning!

One of the best settings for domestic thrillers — we see the perfect family that includes Mark (a pilot), Kate (a doctor), and their lovely son Jacob. Everything is so good until it’s not.

Suddenly police investigate Mark about a suspicious overseas death of some woman. Mark denies everything but later things go weird - Kate learns the woman was Mark’s coworker, Mark wasn’t in his hotel room as he claimed before, also Kate keeps thinking about Mark’s being unfaithful in the past.

All things point to Mark but is it really him? There are wild plot twists that make you suspect every single person! Probably one of your guesses will be the right one but you’ll never know until the end.

Also the narration was smooth and enjoyable.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

A steady paced thriller with a great narrator. A tad predictable in places but not enough to put me off listening.

Kate loves her husband but is he capable of murder? Mark appears to be a loving husband and father. The idea of him being a killer is something Kate can't wrap her mind around. This thriller is full of twists and turns that kept me guessing. The narration of the audiobook masterfully brought the characters to life while adding a layer of suspense. there were times, when I thought I knew where the story was heading, but a new twist would lead the plot in an unexpected direction. Entertaining, intriguing, and engaging describe this twisted tale of deception and betrayal. Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for my audiobook.

As is my usual way with reviews, I will not be repeating the precise of the story here as I believe that the professionals do a better job without giving too much away. What you really need to know is whether this book is worth listening to.
Unlike some thrillers, this book throws you into the tricky situation right from the start. Most of the tale is told from the viewpoint of Kate, the wife but is what she is hearing and experiencing correct? Does she make wise choices? As you can imagine, probably not at each turn but then you ask yourself, could I have done better? All in all, a varied paced thriller, making Liz Lawyer an author to look out for if you like family thrillers.

My Husband’s Lies
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Author: Liz Lawler

I requested an audio advanced readers copy from NetGalley and Bookouture Audio and providing my opinion voluntarily and unbiased.

Synopsis: The police are coming, they’re going to arrest me.’ My blood runs cold at his words. My husband is accused of murder. He swears he is innocent – so why won’t he tell me where he really was that night?

I feel so lucky to have my handsome husband Mark and our blue-eyed little boy. Everyone says we’re the perfect family. I used to believe them.

But everything changes when Mark comes home from a work trip with dark circles under his eyes. That night I jump at a hammering at the door. The police want to question him about the murder of a beautiful, blonde young woman. Mark swears he had nothing to do with it, that she was a colleague, nothing more.

Mark is a respected airline pilot, and the model husband and father. It seems impossible that he would be involved in something like this. But he won’t say a word about where he really was. I believe that he’s not a killer – but I know he’s hiding something. It wouldn’t be the first time.

Then my husband is attacked. I sit by his hospital bed praying for him to wake up, tears streaming down my face. The police say it’s an accident. But what if someone has done this to him?

I go rigid with fear when I see someone hidden in the garden, watching the house. Are they coming to hurt us too? I’ll do anything to protect my precious little boy – and I have to start by uncovering my husband’s lies...

My Thoughts: This was a compelling, gripping domestic thriller. When a book opens with a bang, you know it will take you along a compelling ride. Kate knows that her husband is not a murderer, although he is being accused of one. Kate does believe that her husband is hiding something but before she can find out what that something is, he is attacked by an unknown person. His best friend, Robert, comes to help her, along with his friend Olivia. While her husband recovers in the hospital, she is against a race to unravel his secrets and find out who actually murdered the young woman in Barcelona. Featuring pilots, a doctor, a murder, secrets, and lies.

This story is narrated solely by Kate, in her perspective. There are some chapters narrated by Robert. Kate was naive, too naive, as a doctor, you would think she would have a level of intelligence but all of that goes out of the window when Olivia (a stranger to her) offers to help her with Jacob (their son) so she is not so overwhelmed. Robert, Mark’s best friend and co-pilot, helps initially but then falls off the map for a bit. While I did not agree with some of Kate’s decisions, I understood them. The characters were well developed with depth, mysterious, creative, and intriguing. The author’s writing style was complex, suspenseful, twisty, and kept me invested from the first word to the last word. The prologue opens up with a bang, then the characters are built up, the plot is delivered in twisty layers, and subplots, and then the ending ties up things nicely. Some of the plot is reaching belief, but that is what makes a good fiction book.

The narrator (Gabrielle Nellis-Pain) was fantastic. Her pitch and speed were spot on. She had great voice variation and brought the characters from the page to my mind and elevated the storyline. The way Gabrielle delivered emotion, especially frantic or desperate scenes was superb, you could really feel that emotion come across. I couldn’t wait until my next listen each time until I finished the audiobook. It was compelling, dark, gripping, secretive, domestic thriller that will keep on your feet. The only con is I would have liked Kate to make some different decisions, to take charge of the circumstance of her life, but that did not alter my enjoyment of the story. I highly recommend picking up today!

I haven't read or listened to anything by Liz Lawler before but after listening to this, I certainly won't be making that mistake again!

My Husband's Lies is a riveting listen; a great plot, brilliant characters and written at a great pace. The narrator did an excellent job of drawing me into the book and not letting me go until the end. Great twists, some of which I saw coming but I definitely enjoyed the ride to get there.

Definitely recommended to those of you who enjoy a good thriller and many thanks to the author, Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for enabling me to listen to and share my thoughts of this captivating audiobook.
