Secrets and lies are the name of the game in this well written, twist filled psychological thriller! I had a great time lining up my suspect list as the tension and danger mounted. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator did a fantastic job bringing the book and characters to life! I was fully invested in this book from the very beginning and my attention never wavered.
Kate (a doctor) is stunned when her husband Mark (a pilot) informs her that the police are coming and that he has been accused of murder. He claims his innocence but is evasive when Kate asks him where he was the night the woman was murdered. Kate knows her husband would not kill anyone, but he is being secretive and wont account for his whereabouts.
My mind was swirling with scenarios and questions. Why isn't Mark being forthcoming about where he was the night of the murder? Why won’t he let his wife into his hospital room after he suffers a frightening hit and run injury? Is he a killer?
Kate was an aggravating character. She decides to do her own detective work and makes some seriously bad judgement calls, especially when it comes to their young son. I was shaking my head at her for most of the book.
When not shaking my head at the characters, I kept finding time to listen as this was such a gripping book. I wanted to know whodunit and why? I enjoyed the drama, the fast pace of the book, the tension, and the mounting sense of danger.
Gripping, tense, dramatic, and twist filled!
A doctor and pilot living their dream life with their young son. Only a slight complication of his best friend's massive crush on the wife; the husband's drunken kiss with her best friend. Just a blip.
Until a air flight attendant, fired the previous year for an alleged stalking, is found murdered. And Mark cannot account for his actions.
Mark's injuries from a hit and run force him into a coma. Kate becomes obsessed with solving the murder to clear Mark.
Olivia moves in to assist with childcare. Robert, in love with Kate, falls over himself to offer his help.
How will Kate discover the truth?
Kate's attitude was so removed - I struggled to understand her utter reliance on a stranger to care for her child and home. Completely distraught by her husband's coma and potential guilt in a murder, Kate became obsessed with the murder.
I absolutely loved this. For me It’s a solid 5 stars 🌟
Right from the first words it’s fast paced and downright disturbing. A huge messy twist of lies and deceit. The worst lies come from those we trust, but does Kate really trust Mark? Can she? Should she? After all, a young woman is dead and Mark is hiding something. The quest for truth is an action packed page turner that had me hooked. The writing is smart, the characters who seem far from smart despite their solid hard earned careers are well formed and likeable mainly and the story strong. I also loved the narration.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookature Audio for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook in return for an honest review.
Stalking, murder, and hit and runs…I am all in. This book was filled with twists and turns that left you loving and loathing characters to the end. I really enjoyed the book and also the narration of the story. I’m thankful for this ARC copy and would say it was 4.25/5. There were some instances that as a mother I found a bit unbelievable but then again I barely trust a babysitter🤣🤣. I would definitely recommend this and you will definitely be guessing until the end.

For fans of:
Fast-paced thrillers
Intricate family mysteries
Riveting suspense that keeps you guessing
"My Husband's Lies" by Liz Lawler is a fast-paced and engaging read that kept me thoroughly entertained. The narrative unfolds with a gripping intensity, compelling me to turn pages without pause. However, despite its gripping nature, certain aspects pulled me out of the story.
The book follows the alarming accusation of murder against the protagonist's husband, Mark. As the tension escalates and the mystery deepens, the narrative explores the chilling uncertainties surrounding Mark's innocence. The central character's acceptance of certain events felt a bit farfetched and strained believability, even within the thriller genre's standards.
The story brilliantly captures the essence of a seemingly perfect family shattered by accusations and hidden truths. Mark, a respected airline pilot and a devoted family man, suddenly finds himself embroiled in a murder investigation, refusing to disclose his whereabouts during the crime. The protagonist's determination to uncover the truth, despite her husband's evasiveness, drives the narrative forward.
While the book is well-written and keeps you engaged, the protagonist's swift acceptance of unsettling actions felt a tad unrealistic. However, this doesn't detract from the story's overall gripping nature and suspenseful plot.
WOW this was sooo fast paced I loved it! Had everything I wanted so many thanks for an audio ARC of this Netgalley :)
I received a free copy of the audiobook from netgalley in exchange for my honest review. This book was amazing! I love the thriller that took place while you help find out if Kate’s husband actually did commit the murder. I did figure out the ending but that didn’t stop me from enjoying the story. There are parts where I felt for Kate with everything she has to deal with and other times where I wanted to scream at her to stop being so naive. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good emotional thriller
This was good; 3.5 stars.
I couldn't put it down and while I had my guesses and suspicions, I liked how the author did not go the usual way with the story. To that extent it was refreshing. My biggest complaint was at the end, I didn't believe the husband's explanation for his actions. If you read often in the marital psyche thriller genre, this will be a breath of fresh air. I really (really!) loved the authors note at the end. I have already been to the library to find another book by this author too!
Thanks netgalley for my ARC/ALC!
My Husband's Lies started out being fast-paced, griping, and fun. Unfortunately, as the story went on I started to lose interest. Perhaps it's because I'm a seasoned thriller reader, but I found it very predictable. My other main complaint was that the main protagonist made some of the dumbest decisions possible in the given circumstances.
Overall this wasn't *bad*, and I did enjoy it, but it definitely will not be topping my list of best reads of the year.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for this advanced copy.
Oh what would you do if your husband was in a coma, while also being investigated for murder?
Kate has this amazing kind husband and maybe he murdered someone. We don't know. That's the point of the book.
Anyway, her husband gets a visit from two detectives and that night he takes a walk through the countryside, where he is hit by a car and left alone to die. He doesn't die but he is in a coma.
Kate is trying to cope and solve this murder so he won't be arrested when/if he wakes up.
The narration was perfect and I loved going through this journey with Kate.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
Wow! This book was full of so many twists and turns! I was so convinced of who I thought the murderer was, but was wrong. Olivia was crazy! She is the stuff of nightmares for any mother. This book kept me guessing and had me on the edge the entire time. Liz Lawler is becoming a favorite author of mine as her books are gripping.
I love a good story full of domestic intrigue and this one did not disappoint!
Premise - a woman lives a seemingly perfect life with her husband and young son, but when her husband is arrested for the murder for a young woman who matches his type, she’s not sure if she can trust the man she loves.
I enjoyed the writing (for me the main requirement for prose, especially in genre fiction, is to not call undue attention to itself and distract from the story). I also really liked the protagonist, even though some of her decisions seemed more in service of the plot than true to character.
Is this story predictable? Yes. Is a very competent medical professional presented as too stupid to live when advancing the plot requires it? Yes. Is this still a super fun read? Yes.
At the end of the day, a good book makes me want to read more. The pacing here was great, because it did exactly that!
This book has:
🔪 family drama/domestic intrigue
🔪 secrets aplenty
🔪 unrequited love
🔪 psycho exes
🔪 coveting thy neighbor’s (fill in the blank)
🔪 Murder
Thanks, NetGalley and Bookouture, for the gifted ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was like 3 books in one. A kidnapping, a murder, an affair?, and jealousy. Wow! This was so fun to listen to.
This was so entertaining and I could not wait to listen every day while driving! I do think that Kate was very naive throughout the story regarding every person in her life, but it still worked for me.
I enjoyed this fast paced listen, I loved all of the twists. As you can probably guess who is sketchy in this, I did not guess who the murderer was! I will say, the ending annoyed me with Mark’s reasoning for “withholding the truth”. All in all, worth a listen or a read!
I downloaded this from NetGalley and listened to it while doing some admin.
Three stars from me means that I believe the author has achieved their aims, but that I personally didn't fall in love with the book.
My Husband's Lies is a good example of a novel written in close third person that feels as if it has been written in first. We may as well have been hearing directly from main character Kate, since it feels as if we are inside her head anyway.
Her head felt to me a very muddled place to be. Despite being part of a busy Accident and Emergency Department, Kate doesn't show herself to be someone good at making good decisions quickly while under pressure. It's hard not to reveal spoilers, but suffice it to say that even as someone who doesn't have children myself, I was literally shouting at my tablet when she left her only child with someone she has just met. After that, her decisions go from appalling to unbelievable, as she jets off to investigate the murder of which her husband has been accused, despite having no background in detective work. Indeed, she turns out to be a terrible detective, failing to see the very obvious perpetrator. Again, I was shouting at my tablet.
More concerningly, Kate seems willing to settle for a husband who does not put her and their child first. To call her a bad feminist would be an understatement. She just seems willing to accept that people will treat her badly, and I'm not sure why, because her Mum is portrayed as supportive and caring, and there's no explanation for why Kate herself has not inherited her Mum's healthier attitude to life.
All in all, this one just wasn't for me. I didn't dislike it, but I couldn't love it. Sorry.
Three Word Review: Eyes rolling loudly.
This book is an incredible page-turner. It drew me in very fast, and there were so many unexpected twists until the dramatic climax!! Absolutely recommend!
Many thanks to Net Galley and Bookuture for an audio book for an honest review. This is a domestic thriller. The story was great and the narrator did a awesome job narrating the story. Highly recommend!
Kate and her husband Mark live a happy life with their young son, named Jacob. One day the police show up at their door asking to speak to Mark. They want to question him about a coworker that was killed. When Mark is hit by a car and ends up in the hospital, she decides to investigate on her own to see what really happened to his coworker. Is he guilty of murder? Overall, I thought the story was good but somewhat predictable. I would still recommend it, if you enjoy a thriller that keeps you guessing until the very end.
Many thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for my gifted ALC.
This review will be shared to my Instagram (@coffee.break.book.reviews) in the near future.
I struggled quite a bit with this one. The story started out really well but then I found myself wanting to DNF multiple times as I kept reading. The plotline was too sensational and I found myself rolling my eyes at how unbelievable certain parts were. It also dragged a bit throughout the middle. I seem to be in the minority on this one though so please don't take my review personally if you plan to read it. It could have just been me having a bad day.
Kate is a doctor, a wife, and a mother to a sweet little boy. Her husband, Mark, is a pilot who just got back from a trip only to be accused of murdering a woman. Kate doesn’t know what to believe and Mark is being evasive. While Kate is working and trying to wrap her mind around what is happening, her mom and new found friend tend to her son.
Did her husband kill this woman? Is he covering for someone? You’ll have to read to find out.
Narrator - I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the narrator of this audiobook. She had a very pleasant voice and kept me engaged. Her tone matched the circumstances and I’d be happy to listen to a book by her again.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for letting me sample this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
