4.25/5 stars! This is the 58th installment of the In Death series by author J.D. Robb (aka Nora Roberts). You'd think by now, I would be tired of this author's writing...and you would be wrong. I loved the futuristic elements of this story and any thriller with infectious diseases that could run rampant, has my full attention.

I loved this book. I've read a lot of the books in this series but found this one refreshing. The murder victims being random choices based on something the killer perceived was interesting and shows how random and unexplainable life can be at times. The unpredictable nature of the killings made it harder to investigate but, as always, that didn't deter Eve. I also enjoyed the continued insights into Peabody's new home and her giving Eve information about their choices for it, whether she wanted to hear it or not. Another fabulous read, I'm already looking forward to the next one.

This is the 58th book in the Eve Dallas by author JD. Robb. This is a series I keep promising to read more of as I have enjoyed every book I have read by this author.

“Random in Death” is a gripping story that I found difficult to put down. The story begins with sixteen-year-old Jenna Harbough, whose parents finally relent and allow her to attend a New York club with her best friends. She dreams of sharing her music demo with Avenue A’s guitarist, Jake Kincade and is excited when Jake catches her eye and smiles from the stage, marking the best night of her life. Tragically, it becomes the last night of her life.

The tension builds as Jake discovers Jenna in the alley, sick and confused after being injected with a lethal cocktail of substances by an unknown assailant. When Jake’s girlfriend, Nadine arrives she calls Lieutenant Eve Dallas and so the investigation starts.

Lieutenant Eve Dallas is a very interesting character and I guess that is just as well as it is the 58th book in the series. Well written, full of tension, intrigue and a very interesting case to solve. The autopsy reveals a toxic mix of drugs and infectious agents, pointing to a malicious and premeditated attack. There is no obvious motive and this leads to Dallas to the scary possibility that Jenna was a random victim of a deranged individual.

I really enjoyed this book and excited that I have so many other books in this series to choose from.

I would like to thank both Netgalley and Little Brown Book Group for supplying a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Random In Death is the fifty-eighth book in the popular In Death series by American author, J.D. Robb. In the heat of the 2061 summer, the youth of New York City are flocking to entertainment events. Eve and Roarke’s Saturday night is disturbed by a call from her friend, Nadine Furst, attending a special concert for the under twenty-one crowd at Club Rock It where her boyfriend Jake Kincade is playing in popular band, Avenue A. Even though the venue is dry and strictly controlled, a sixteen-year-old girl has been involuntarily injected with something nasty, and has died in the rear alley soon after, despite Jake’s efforts at CPR.

A conscientious student with outstanding musical talent, Jenna Harbough has been murdered by a non-descript man wielding a syringe containing a quickly-lethal cocktail of opiates and other vile substances. Questioning of those close to her reveal no potential grudges or motives. Jenna didn’t recognise her attacker, so what made her his target? Tracking him down without more information will be near impossible, although scant trace at the scene, and some witness observations may help.

The next night, though, at the annual Battle of the Bands gig in Memorial Park, an identical attack on seventeen-year-old Arlie Dillon has Eve and her team scrambling. When not even the vaguest connection between the two teens, beyond their being young, pretty and female, is found, Eve and Peabody begin to fear the killer is selecting his victims at random. And worse, he’s unlikely to stop at two.

There’s a lot of legwork in this instalment: leads on shoes and clothing mean questioning retail assistants after a nudge in the right direction by Roarke’s young intern, Jamie, and Nadine’s intern, Quilla. The quality and combination of drugs used have them looking for a super-smart high-school teen with access to, and knowledge of, chemical manufacture. And then they catch a break with the third victim.

Excellent deductive work is interspersed with some domestic scenes involving favourite characters and plenty of enjoyable banter, a few hot love scenes between Eve and Roark, and a hint of romance between the interns, all leading up to a nail-biting climax. And, as always, Roarke steps in to assist and support to “keep his cop safe”. A notable difference between Robb’s 2061 and our own 2024 is that in this NYC, dozens, if not hundreds, of teens would have recorded the fatal attacks on their phones: suspend your disbelief for that, I guess. This is futuristic crime fiction at its most entertaining.

It was not easy to read the given copy of the book as many sentences had no gaps between words. Despite this issue the boo wasn't bad. A serial killer injects a girl with poisonous mix in a public event and repeats doing that every day. Investigators trying to find him putting all efforts to research every clue.

A talented teenage singer , song writer thinks all her dreams have come true - her parents have finally agreed to let her attend a concert by her favourite band , Avenue A . Just before a break in the concert she catches the lead singer, Jake's , eye - he smiles ......... she is in heaven .
That is until someone bumps into her , she feels sick and dizzy - what has happened ?
When she staggers into the alley behind the club she is caught by Jake as she collapses ...... she dies in his arms !
When Eve and her team arrive and assess the incident they realise she has been murdered - who would want to kill her ? why would someone kill her ? Is this a random one off or just the start of a spree ?
The story is full of twists and turns but Eve and the gang are up to the job - her focus is to stop the killer before he strikes again .

This is another excellent book in this long running , near future , police procedural - with characters you become invested in .
I look forward to the next book in the series
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own

Another good book from the In death series. For me personally this was a little bit harder to read as it features the random deaths of teenage girls. As a parent of teenage girls myself I felt more of an impact from the deaths. I still enjoyed the book and it has all of the things I love from this series.

I enjoyed this book . Who couldn't love the main characters of Eve and Rourke. I've read all of the books in this series from the beginning and my only criticism is that they are becoming a bit formulaic. You know pretty much before you start what is going to happen although J D Robb is very good at not giving away the perp until nearly the end if the book.

If you want a good beach read or just something to take you away from the everyday for a while then pick this up.

I am great full for the opportunity provided by publishers to read one of series in depth . I am one of a great fan of these series of books. I like the main character who is an inspiration for me . She is a powerful character but at the same time I like the interaction and relationship she has with her husband. Love the conversation between the couples. The book kept me occupied and gripped until the end .
Excellent plot and fast based investigation in a futuristic world. Would love to read the next book in the series.
Would highly recommend ecveryone to read all books in the series . Thank you netgalley for this wonderful opportunity to review one of my favourite author and book series.

Writing an original review for an In Death title is impossible by this stage. I have read and enjoyed every single book in this series and have run out of words to express my love for these mysteries, the setting, and the characters featured. From the moment I read Naked in Death I have been intrigued by the near-future setting and the main characters. The interactions between Eve and Roarke, and the way they compliment each other enhance every single book.

As always, J.D. Robb brings us an original and heartbreaking murder in Random in Death. And, also as always, she and her team bring the mystery to a satisfying conclusion despite the odds being stacked against them. Fans of these books will enjoy the investigation of the crime as much as the personal news of the main and secondary characters. And if they are as big a fan as I am, they are already counting down the days until the release of, Passions in Death, In Death #59. 😊

A must read series for me. The novel has a deeply involved plot that has strong characters, wonderful relationships, and great pacing to the series. Overall, this novel was a twisty tale that kept me engaged throughout the story can't recommend this series enough while futuristic settings aren't normally my thing this series has kept me engaged from the start. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I'm a big fan of Eve Dallas, and I've loved the fast paced investigations she's taken me on over the years. This is another exciting read, with her "family" around her - I'm enjoying the addition of Nadine's rock star and seeing Mavis' family growing up :)

I won't say more about the plot, because you know what to expect by the time you're on book 58 in the series, but its another good one.

Recommended.

"Random in Death" by J.D. Robb is the latest instalment to the In Death series. The book has its moments of suspense and excitement, but it falls short in terms of character development and plot complexity. While the concept is interesting, the execution feels rushed and lacks depth. Some of the twists and turns in the plot feel forced and predictable. Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and J.D. Robb for the ARC of this book.

I haven’t read a book in this series for a couple of years and am wondering why. I love Eve and Roarke, the books are always gripping, unputdownable and well written. I’ve again read late into the night because I was enjoying it so much. Eve is a great character, flawed, with an interesting back story and, with Rourke, is really enjoying her life, having friends but still having a passion for her job. Over the years we’ve got to know so many of the regulars, they feel like family, even Galahad. This is another really good book, I love the futuristic but believable setting, the twists and turns, the realistic police enquiries, and the way all the clues come together at the end. This book can be a standalone read, but I’m so glad I’ve read nearly all 58 in this series. My only downside is that as an ARC, there were a lot of times when the sentences had no punctuation and it was a struggle to decipher what was written. That said, it didnt stop me enjoying the read,

Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book.

58 books in and I am still hooked on this series. Random in Death is, like its predecessors, fast paced, twisty and has a cast of characters you can't help but like and care for (most of them anyway). I loved every page of Random in Death and cannot wait for book 59!

Thank you to NetGalley and Little, Brown Book Group UK for my ARC.

Even if Eve Dallas is one of the longest series it never stops entertaining and keeping me hooked.
It's sci-fi and mystery, one of the best technothriler.
This is excellent and entertaining.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine

I love a Eve Dallas book and I am sure this will be great, unfortunately the copy we have been given to read has whole sentences without punctuation or gaps in the words, I was working out what was being said but there are so many I have given up, I will buy it when it comes out.

I understand the concept of not getting completed books and books with errors, but this is the worst one I have had.

Music , Murder and Mystery…
The PERFECT start to an amazing read.

As always Nora Roberts does it again. It has everything
The book starts off with the murder and does not slow down!!!
Spending time with Roark , Peabody and McNab is always fun. Also Bella is abso-poso adorbs!!!😁

The clues, the investigation and of course Lieutenant Dallas pull the reader in and do not let go.

After getting a call from Nadine on a lazy weekend and another death the very next night Lt. Eve is in a race against time as she tries to catch a psychopath who seems to pick his targets at random and stop him before he takes another life.

As is always the case, Eve works the case meticulously and tirelessly, leaving no stone unturned and finds clues where there seem to be none.

RANDOM IN DEATH is the latest book in a very long series but each book has its own case with a very satisfying conclusion. In spite of that I would highly , highly recommend that you read these books in order of their publication dates as the introduction of characters and their development is an overlying story arc.

Highly recommend for fans of police procedurals , murder mysteries and detective stories.
Perfect for fans of Sherlock Holmes or Agatha Christie.

J D Robb's latest title in the Eve Dallas series is no. 58!
A series of seemingly random murders of teenages girls with no apparent link to one another and Eve and her cohort are back on duty and racing against time. This is very fast paced taking place over a a few days as they race to find the killer before the next murder.
story that drags you along! An exciting read.and a good addition to the series.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Little, Brown Book Group UK for an advance copy of Random in Death, the fifty-eighth novel to feature Lieutenant Eve Dallas, set in New York in the near future.

Sixteen year old Jenna Harbough is in a club dancing to her favourite band, Avenue A, when she feels a sting in her arm. A few minutes later she is dying in lead singer Jake Kincaide’s arms. Eve is in no doubt that Jenna was injected with a lethal dose of drugs, so it’s up to her to discover if she was targeted or if it was random.

I thoroughly enjoyed Random in Death, which is another twisted tale of mayhem and bad actors. The novel is mostly told from Eve’s point of view so the reader gets immersion and the possibility of getting a few guesses in, not that I found the time, because although it is a longish novel the action never seems to stop and it’s quite fast moving.

The plot is interesting and I found it fascinating the way Eve is able to turn the very few clues they have into leads that actually take them somewhere and put them in a position to identify a prime suspect. I haven’t read many novels in the series, but this one feels darker with a nasty motive and an extremely unpleasant perpetrator. The motive is not novel and has been fairly topical over the past few years, but the author puts her own unique spin on it.

I am intrigued by the future that the author has created. Obviously it was about 30 years ago when she created it and it was futuristic, but now it’s creaking. There are still futuristic elements, but it seems to lack cutting edge IT. It’s a quaint mixture.

There is a fair amount of humour in the novel that makes it a fun read, so I have no hesitation in recommending it.
