Wow! Such an incredible concept for a book and brilliantly executed.
It reads like Exciting Times meets How to Kill Your Family, and is worryingly close to the bone for a millennial sometimes! I was intrigued throughout the book but with what you learnt from the copy, it didn't really become page-turning until the final third of the book. However once I was there I couldn't stop myself from racing to the end.
And that ending! Love it. Can't wait to see what Tasha Coryell writes next but please give away less in the copy next time
What did I just read? A great debut with an interesting protagonist and original idea. The thing I loved about this book the most is the dark humour that runs through, against the darkness of tortured/murdered women. It was a joy to read this novel and I would definitely read the next offering from this author. 4 stars
A great book following the journey of a young lady who is obsessive. Some great twists in there as you follow the story along.
Disturbing and propulsive with a host of unlikable yet weirdly compelling characters, this devious book somehow still manages to slip quite a few jokes in along with several sharp observations about our society’s disturbing reality. I found the twist a bit predictable, but honestly that didn’t matter much to me. It’s an innovative book that walks a lot of lines, and sometimes soars - I especially admired that bit in the beginning which intercuts the MC’s conversation with her friend with her doomed spiral into “love”. Great for fans of twisted books, dark humour and true crime.
A decent thriller that will keep you turning the pages after lights out, LOVE LETTERS
TO A SERIAL KILLER brings a darkly humorous twist to a phenomenon most people will never understand: how can somebody fall in love with an accused murderer? I liked this one overall and it starts off incredibly strong, but I will admit it lost me in the final quarter. Largely because the twist was so predictable and the relationship so unrealistic. If you love crime fiction, this is a good one for your summer reading list!
With her career going nowhere and her latest relationship ending in heartbreak, Hannah finds herself obsessing over the recent murders of young women. But when she writes a letter to the man accused of their murder, venting her rage at his actions, he surprises her by writing back. And Hannah soon finds herself obsessing, instead, over a man who may be a serial killer...
I was drawn to the unusual premise of Love Letters to a Serial Killer, which tackles the controversial topic of women who fall in love with men accused of murder, and which defies easy categorisation. In that sense, it didn't disappoint. This book faces its difficult themes head-on, as Hannah muses on why she is so attracted to William, and whether she would feel the same way if she knew he was innocent. It also merges romance and thriller tropes, glamorising its darker scenes and making the reader feel uneasy about its lighter scenes. I appreciated that this one does something different.
I tried to go into Love Letters to a Serial Killer with an open mind, but this book didn't always work for me. I found its pacing a little slow, its twist a little obvious, and its protagonist a little annoying. I'm glad that I picked this one up, and I never considered putting it down before the end, but it never quite grabbed my attention as much as I would have liked. It didn't help that the story is told through flashbacks, which I often find drags out the suspense longer than is necessary. I recommend giving this one a go, if its premise appeals to you, but it didn't quite work for me.
Love Letters to a Serial Killer follows Hannah who becomes fixated on a notorious serial killer. She makes some really questionable and unconventional choices and is a rather frustrating character at times!! All in all, a unique and compelling read.
3.5
I found this to be a very quick read with some laugh out loud moments and some incredibly cringey moments. I saw the twist come from a mile away but I think it was a good ending. Hannah was such an unlikeable main character that I actually ended up loving her?? Good work from the author there!
Thank you to the author and publisher for the chance to read this ARC, via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This is such a funny, twisty, enthralling for the first page read. It’s like a rollercoaster and you know Hannah, the main character should run far away from a serial killer and anyone else near him but, she runs towards the chaos. The book itself is so well done, hilarious in Hannah’s absolute naivety, lack of personal safety, and the chilling thought that she actually gets a thrill from the danger.
Five stars and perfect for fans of How to Kill Men and Get Away With It.
I really loved the dark satire humour and found the story fun and entertaining. A great holiday read.
A bit of a different concept for a book!.
Hannah is bored with her mundane life and becomes obsessed with a serial killer and starts to communicate with him via letter. I thought it was very enjoyable book which was fast paced with a lot of dark humour.
Would make fabulous holiday reading.
This is a tough one to rate however ultimately I think 3.5 is a fair rating.
This book was entertaining, and had moments which made me laugh out loud.
Hannah, our man character is not likeable, and is an (intentional I think) annoying, single millennial who is obsessed with serial killers. This obsession leads her into a series of events which were wholly unbelievable but entertaining none the less!
I guessed early on the outcome of the book (not all but did guess the main twist) so could have been hidden a little better. I do read a lot of crime/thriller though so possibly more to do with me than the writing :)
I would recommend this to fans of dark comedies and thrillers. It even has a little romance sprinkled in, an enjoyable read!
Absolutely brilliant, loved it. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me an advance copy, I will definitely be recommending.
Hannah Wilson is going no where in her job. She enjoys life by following the news. Especially that of the murders of young women. She is intrigued by the man arrested as the serial killer. William Thompson a good looking lawyer. As he awaits his trial Hannah begins writing to him.
At first her letters are bitter towards him. They then begin to have feelings for each other. With the trial impending she has to decide. Is he guilty and if he is acquitted will she be in a relationship with an innocent man or just a man who got away with his crimes.
I found i liked the character of William. However, the character of Hannah is very shallow and not particularly likeable . At times i found myself a little bored with the storyline and began skim reading the book just because I wanted to reach the outcome.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to see a DRC
Is this a dark comedy? A psychological thriller? A romance? A crime story? Well in fact it's a bit of all of them. I'm not sure one has to like the main character else we would not read many books! - but a decent read.
My thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for this ARC in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
Hannah is a (intentional) cliche of a single millennial young woman who develops an interest in true crime and an obsession with a man accused of serial murder. Reader, she gets engaged to him…!
This is a darkly witty book, and I found myself drawn to Hannah despite her foibles. I liked the fact that all of the characters are undeniably human, with obvious flaws and redeeming characteristics.
My only criticism is that I found the book a bit slow in places. A great read for fans of modern literary fiction!
I will be posting my complete review in a couple of days, to fully digest the story, the plot and the characters
Many thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing Group for providing me with an advance copy of this book to review.
This was a strange read. There was some humour and moments that made me laugh out loud. But the main character was annoying. I didn’t dislike her but I didn’t particularly like her either. I didn’t feel invested in the book and was relieved when it finished. It isn’t a bad book, just not the right book for me.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC in return for my honest and unbiased opinion.
I am a massive fan of books that have a female protagonist who is, to put it ineloquently, a bit awful. This one certainly had that, let me tell you! I think I would have enjoyed it more if there was character development by the ending, as the main characters were quite static throughout the book.
I read this arc on my Kindle, and the formatting at times was a bit off, but that might have just been on my end.
I really enjoyed this book. The take was fresh, the voice unique and the voice of the main character draws you in. A fresh, unique novel that I couldn't stop reading!
