I love a good Katie Fforde book & this one ticks all the boxes for me.
Well written with engaging characters & uplifting moving storyline you can lose yourself in.
Cass is not happy with her life at the moment as all she really wants to do is be an artist.
Her family thinks she would be much better to get a profession.
In the meantime her father a well known photographer who lives in the wilds of Scotland has asked if she would do him a big favour.
He wants her to find & photograph an ancient relic on the island of Dominica as he can’t do it himself & doesn’t want to let his old friend down.
She is to be accompanied by a journalist friend of her father’s Ranulph Gregor who lives not far from him.
What she thought would be a simple task to accomplish becomes a nightmare as a hurricane hits the island not long after they arrive.
Plenty of intrigue & mystery this wonderful story had me turning the pages.
I thoroughly enjoyed it.
This was a delightful story that brought the island of Diminique to life.great characters and there musy of course be a villain. Lovely storyline coping with the good times and the bad. Beautiful conclusion.
This was a simple, fun, easy and quick read. The perfect type of book for your holiday, beach, pool kind of read. This is a first for me by the author and one I enjoyed and I would read more of their work. The book cover is eye-catching and appealing and would spark my interest if in a bookshop. Thank you very much to the author, publisher and Netgalley for this ARC.
I love Katie’s books, but slightly disappointed at this one. Unfortunately I found it slow and didn’t engage me to the story. There was a relatively quick and predictable ending which was a shame. Positively the characters were real to life and Austen did get you riled.
Lovely, nice easy reading.felt like I was on a Caribbean island with Cassie when the writer was telling the story of her being there in a hurricane and trying to get of the same island
Also a love story that hit more bumps than the trees felled by same hurricane you kept hoping they could sort themselves out somehow
Lovely book to read
Another easy read from the pen of Katie Fforde. This one takes us to an exotic island with a mystery attached. Whilst I liked it in that it was easy to read this time I didn't really gel with the characters. They were too two-dimensional and cardboard cut out for me this time.
A nice easy read which is perfect for a summer beach read.
Cass finds her way to Dominica in the most random way, but finds herself, her talents & the love of her life.
I really enjoyed this book, it was easy, gripping & I was desperate to see what happened next!
I particularly liked the authors note at the end - the petroglyph & facts about Dominica are real, which made it all the better!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this. It was an easy read, what I’d call a holiday read. I loved the setting, I felt I was on a Caribbean island. The characters were well developed and likeable, well most were. I recommend this book to anyone who just wants to enjoy a story.
This is the first book that I have read by Katie Fforde but I hope that it won't be the last, although I found some areas a bit lacking I did really enjoy it.
Cass Blakeley's life was at a crossroads, her mother , who lived in the Cotswolds with her husband and step brothers, wanted her to get a profession like her step brothers, Cass's father, an emanant photographer, lived in the remote islands of Scotland, he wanted Cass to follow in his footsteps and become a photographer, no one seemed to care that all Cass wanted to do was go to art school, drawing was her passion.
On a visit to the highlands Cass met Ranulph Gregor, a journalist friend of her father and was instantly attracted to him.
Cass's father had a request for her, he wanted her to take a hand drawn map to Dominica, find an ancient relic, a petroglyph, and take pictures of it, Ranulph, who knew the island would accompany her.
This seemed a relatively simple task but a hurricane had hit the island and changed the landscape. Bastian, the son of her fathers island friend, needed to find the petroglyph to finish his thesis, the money it earned would bring much needed money to the island, one person stood in his way, Austin Gilmore, an American archaeologist who needed to prove that the petroglyph didn't exist.
This story twists and turns in many different ways, there is mystery, intrigue, jealousy, respect and Cass, leaving the indulged girl behind and becoming a driven woman. I did think that parts of the book were a bit rushed, Cass and Ranulph falling in love for instance, but it did leave me wanting to visit Dominica, I wanted to see the white sands, I wanted to see the sun drop from the sky, I wanted to see the twinkling stars and meet the friendly people.
Thank you Net Gallery for my ARC, this review was written voluntarily.
A good read. An interesting story loved the locations the remote part af Scotland to the Caribbean very different countries but gelled together well. I didn't think it was as good as some of Katie's other books but still worth a read aand sure most of her readers will enjoy it
Wonderful descriptions of both the Caribbean Island of Dominica and the Scottish Island. They really set the scene for the book and made it enjoyable even without the lovely story. The characters in Dominica were very well put together and did give a real depth to the story and just what life is like out there particularly after the hurricane. Easy to read and makes you feel good.
Cass has gone to visit her father on a remote Scottish island. He asks Cass to take and old map out to Dominica to his old friend's son Bastian. The map shows the position of an Petroglyph, which would prove that people were on the island before the Columbians.
Cass agrees to go, also on the trip is Ranulph, a journalist and friend of her father. Before they can embark on the trip a hurricane hits the island making their journey less straightforward.
Cass uses skills no-one knew she had to help out on the island. But will they find the Petroglyph? An intriguing tale.
First of all i would like to thank Katie and Random House for letting me review such a great novel .

Thank you, NetGalley. Any opportunity to read Katie Fforde has to be a bonus, and this book tells the super story of a young woman being sent on a mission on behalf of her Father, who wants to support his friend. The author describes Dominica in a manner that captivates and encourages you to travel there, to have your own adventures, and to find friendships and romance alongside challenges.
I appreciate that Katie Fforde does not follow a predictable plot and allows her narration to guide you along a journey that allows you to relax, connect, and enjoy.
Thank you.
Cass is asked by her father to go to Dominca for a photographic mission.
She can't get out of it and is nervous as the island has recently been hit by a hurricane causing much damage to the island and its people.
She travels with Ranulph a close friend of her father's who is also helping to search for some rare ancient stone carvings that her father needs photographs of to help his friend Bastian write a book on the ancient people who inhabited the island.
Cass has to be brave to cope with these new challenges and along the way she finds herself falling deeply in love with Ranulph but with an old flame from his past making a reappearance she is unsure of herself and whether he could ever feel the same way for her.
This was such a lovely story, I always enjoy Katie's novels and was thrilled when this was up for an ARC copy as I've never read a bad story by her.
Fantastic author and I throughly enjoyed this feel good tale set in far flung, exotic locations steeped in history.
A great read.
I loved this novel. It has made me fall in love with Dominica. Katie Ffordes descriptive writing made me believe I was there. Amazing knowledge of the country shines through. The characterisation was wonderful. I adored all but one of the characters, who I would love to have seen getting his just deserts. Full of compassion on wit, lovers of Katie Fforde will not be disappointed if you have never read one of her books, then this is a must. You will fall in love with her writing and want to read all of her books.
Thank you Katie for a superb book.
A gorgeous story of family, friendship and a personal journey throughout the book. Cass is asked to complete a photography project for her father and travels to Dominica , which has just suffered a hurricane. They do their best to help out , whilst trying to find some ancient historical site. I loved this book.
I have read, but not one of the best a few books by this author and enjoyed them. This was an ok read
This was such a beautiful tale of love and self discovery. I absolutely loved the romance but also how our mains were working to repair a community affected by natural disaster. Such a beautiful read. The Story is still staying with me which is how I know it's a good book.
I love a Katie Fforde book and this will be on many lists for 2024. Really recommend especially for some inspiration of summer when it’s a rainy February day.
