This is Katie Fforde back to her excellent best! Descriptions of foreign countries so vivid you can shut your eyes and imagine you are there and people who you want to be your friends, a heartwarming emotional read.

An adventurous romance set (mainly) on the beautiful island of Dominica. It’s not hard to fathom out exactly what will happen, but it’s an enjoyable journey nonetheless.

The romance element moved a bit too quickly for my liking, going from nothing to complete infatuation in a chapter. But overall, a nice holiday read. Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for my review copy.

A beautiful uplifting book based on an exquisite Caribbean Island of Dominica. This story is based on a young woman named Cass.
Cass is asked by her father (he’s a well known photographer) to travel to Dominica to take part in a photography assignment, which to Cass sounds interesting and very different. Her father has arranges for a friend of his (Ranulph) to travel with Cass as he’s been asked to find some rare carvings for her dad. When they arrive on the Island it has been hit with a devastating hurricane.
This story describes the Island and the people living there so beautifully.. I felt that I was transported to this exquisite place. I could picture the scenery, taste the food and mingle with the local people..
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book about love, courage and honesty.
Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this brilliant book by Katie Fforde

I did enjoy it, but not my favourite Katie Fforde novel I'm afraid.
I have read just about everything Katie has published and enjoyed them all, but this one just didn't live up to them.
Still an easy enjoyable read, but so much of it felt unbelievable, and conversations were stilted and unnatural. I thought the main character was 18 or 19 and she came over as naive, and immature (but she had done an off road driving course!!) It was a surprise to discover at the end she was supposed to be 25. One or two of the conversations she had, had me laughing in disbelief!

If you are new to Katie Fforde read some of her older novels first as she written much better, and don't let this one put you off.

For fans of Katie Fforde, Island in the Sun will not disappoint. We meet Cass, a young woman who isn’t sure of the future she’s chosen, as she is summoned by her father. He sends her on an errand to Dominica to photograph a lost relic, travelling with her father’s friend Ranulph whom she quickly develops feelings for.
This is a lovely, interesting story - perfect holiday read or if you need transporting somewhere warmer!

I loved this lighthearted book, with a touch of intrigue and of course romance.
The main character Cass is delightful and the island of Dominica sounds so enchanting, it is now on my wish list to visit.
This author can be relied upon for an enjoyable read every time.

Cass travels to Dominica on an errand for her father. In the aftermath of a hurricane, she helps the locals and for the first time in her life feels useful and respected . Plus there is the added romantic interest of Ranulph. Katie Fforde can be relied upon to produce books with an interesting, underlying theme. I thoroughly enjoyed this read, learned something about archaeology and the island of Dominica.

Always a good story from Katie. Liked the mix of Scotland and the Caribbean too! Loved friendships formed along the way.

An enjoyable enough read, but the actions of the main two characters were rather strange at times. Reading about Dominica was interesting.

I have read almost all of Katie’s books. They are wonderful love stories. Sadly I found this one a little hard to get into. Cass is a young girl visiting her Dad on a remote Scottish island. They have links with a small Caribbean island that has undergone a hurricane. Cass decides to travel with her Father’s neighbour to the island she had visited many years before to offer help. There are several friendships made and misunderstandings causing problems along the way. I know this book was close to Katie’s heart having family in this part of the world. Try it and form your own opinion.

Another lovely read by Katie Fforde. I really enjoyed this book. It had an interesting story line, and set in the stunning location of Dominica in the Caribbean. Great characters and good interaction between them. Recommend either for a summer read or to wash away the winter blues.

This book is set mostly on the island of Dominica in the Caribbean. It is a great read in the midst of the 'January blues'. It was an unusual storyline and I had to look up some of the geological terms (I personally found they broke the flow of the story), but I couldn't wait to see how the story would be wrapped up.

This was a nice read, but not my favourite Katie Fforde book.
Cass is called to Scotland to visit her father who sends her on an errand to the island of Dominica.
She's sent with handsome Ranulph and out of the blue she's fallen in love with him.
I felt the premise for sending her to Dominica was weak and overall the book felt rushed.

A new book from Katie Fforde should always be a treat, but this one felt a little bit flat and rushed. Scotland to the beautiful island of Dominica with Cass who just needs to 'grow up and find herself'.

Obviously there is romance and Ms Fforde ought to be getting away from Mills and Boon, in my opinion.

Luckily, her writing is top class and easy to read.

Thanks to Net Galley and Random House UK Cornerstone for the chance to read and review.

Having really enjoyed Highland Fling, I was looking forward to this one. The descriptions of Dominica and life after a hurricane are great and give the place a character of its own, but unfortunately the plot just felt rushed. One minute she’s in Scotland and the next she’s racing off to Dominica with very little reason. Then she’s suddenly in love, with very little build up. It was very “oh he’s quite attractive” and then a page later “I love him why will he not notice me?”. It’s almost as if a massive chunk was edited out in favour of describing the island!

Anyway, it’s a light read and nice and easy going. Just don’t start here if the author is new to you, she’s written much better characters and plots!

Thanks to NetGalley for a free ARC in return for an honest review.

Thank you Katie you have done it again!
This is a lovely escape to two islands; one un named in Scotland, and Dominica in the Caribbean. Cass, the youngest in her family, has yet to find her profession’ as her siblings often remind her, but when her photographer father asks her to take something precious to hurricane hit Dominica her life changes dramatically.
Such lovely descriptions of the islands made this book a joy to read. Cass made me cross at one point for not believing in herself or Ranulph, but when is love ever straightforward?

“Island in the Sun” focuses on the character of Cassie. She’s in her mid-twenties but has always been seen by her family as somewhat childish and has never stuck to anything in terms of study or a career. But her Dad asks her to help him assist an old friend on the island of Dominica which gives her the chance to do something important and prove herself. She has the help of the older but handsome Ranulph who Cassie falls for instantly but he is seemingly coupled up and she decides she should focus on her task…but it’s not always that easy!

I have read some of Katie Fforde’s books in the past and enjoyed them. I know that you have to suspend a certain amount of disbelief in order to do so but I really struggled with this one. The characters behave and speak to each other in ways that didn’t make sense to me and I found myself rolling my eyes at them multiple times. Their actions felt unrealistic and I think this is partly because some of the key relationships in the book weren’t given enough time/text to develop or that sufficient background wasn’t given. I’m really sorry to be so critical but I just didn’t take to this book.

On the plus side, it is a very easy read and I’m sure would be a good book to take on holiday. It also really sold Dominica as a destination and I hope one day to have the opportunity to visit.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book.

Island in the Sun felt like a very different kind of book for Katie Fforde. Although the basic premise is the same (girl meets boy/girl falls in love/girl imagines some kind of problem/girl and boy finally talk to each other), this book seems deeper and more grounded in the real, rather than an ideal, world. Having said that, it's set mainly on two islands, one an idealised Scottish one, somewhere on the West Coast, and one in the Caribbean, Dominica in the immediate aftermath of a hurricane.

If I'm being honest, I feel that the plot doesn't really hang together. Why would a father send his daughter to an island trying to recover from a hurricane? Why hadn't the father done something about the accidentally stolen map sooner? And just why Austin? I can't believe in him and his behaviour at all.

But I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book once I'd decided to overlook its idiosyncrasies. As ever, Katie Fforde conjures about her setting wonderfully well, and her characters are strongly realised. Cassie I can take or leave; in real I'd think she was a bit wet and immature - but maybe that's a sign of me getting old!
