What if your soulmate could only ever be the love of your afterlife?
Emery is 5 the first time her heart stops and she meets Nick. He is there to help people who have died but she is soon brought back to life and has to leave Nick behind. Over the years her heart defect means she “dies” several times and she begins to enjoy fleeting moments with Nick until she’s resuscitated each time. As Emery grows closer to Nick she is almost wiling her heart to stop so she can see him again but her family and friends are desperate for her to stay alive.
What a beautiful book and I had tears in my eyes at the end. Not only did I enjoy following the connection Emery had with Nick but the ones she had with her friends and family were equally important. Not the kind of book I’d usually pick up but I’m so glad I did. Thanks to @netgalley for the opportunity to read this book and good luck to the author on its release, I will definitely looking for more by her.

Wow, what a brilliant read! This book is filled with so much love and heart that I found it impossible not to be moved by the story. Becky Hunter's writing is beautiful, taking the simple boy meets girl and giving it a unique twist, making it more than memorable.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I was super excited to read this book having loved Becky’s debut One Moment last year. I have devoured this book in just over a day with a few tears at the end and a warm, fuzzy feeling. A truly beautiful read.
Emery first dies when she’s 5 years old, the moment her family discovers she has a rare heart condition and the moment her life changes forever. Hovering in the transition between life and death, Emery meets Nick, a guide for those passing through to the afterlife. But she’s not ready to die yet and clings on to life. Throughout her life Emery continues to die and meet Nick, who becomes her soulmate and love of her life. But they each feel themselves to blame for their circumstances and need each other to find their way through and accept their fate. A gentle story of love, of family, of unconditional friendships, of grief, of self understanding, of self acceptance that is unbelievably tender and truly captured my heart.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher Atlantic Books, Corvus for a copy in exchange for a review.
Such an interesting and unusual storyline that instantly had me hooked . Emery is 5 years old when she first days - she has a heart condition that when she is excited or surprised it stops and she dies for a moment. When this happens she goes to a place that isn't here and her she meets Nick a sort of guardian angel. This happens frequently throughout her life and as she gets older she wants to spend more time with Nick but that would mean making the ultimate sacrifice. As you can imagine with this storyline there are some sad moments and I did shed a few tears. It's a heartfelt and thoughtful novel that is different to anything I have read in a long time. I really enjoyed it and couldn't put it down.
I am completely in love with this novel and couldn’t recommend it more. Like her debut One Moment, Becky manages to take a dark subject and somehow infuse it with warmth. She creates characters you really care about, and gives them dilemmas that would test the strongest of us.
As Emery ages and meets Nick at different points in her life he acts not just as an impossible love interest but counsellor, trying to get Emery to commit to a future, even as he know that will drive her away from him.
I found myself wanting everything for Emery , even though it was impossible. Becky has written such a brave yet vulnerable character and given her such a challenging life. I admit I shed a tear at the final pages.
Please buy this book, it’s just marvellous.
Read and reviewed in exchange for a free copy from NetGalley. This was an enjoyable read with distinct 'The Time Traveler's Wife' vibes. The story was engaging and I was invested in the characters.
I absolutely adored Becky’s first book so I was delighted when I got approved for a digital ARC of her upcoming novel, Meet me When My Heart Stops.
The first time Emery's heart stops, she is only five years old...
Emery is born with a heart condition that means her heart could quite literally stop at any moment. The people around her know what to do - if they act quickly enough there will be no lasting damage, and Emery's heart can be restarted. But when this happens, she is briefly technically dead.
Each time Emery's heart stops, she meets Nick. His purpose is to help people adjust to the fact that they are dead, to help them say goodbye, before they move on entirely. He does not usually meet people more than once - but with Emery, he is able to make a connection, and he finds himself drawn to her.
As Emery's life progresses, and she goes through ups and downs, she finds that a part of her is longing for those moments when her heart will stop - so that she can see Nick again.
This is the story of two fated lovers who long for each other, but are destined never to share more than a few fleeting moments - because if they were to be together, it would mean the end of Emery's life.
Needless to say, it did not disappoint. A brilliant collection of well-rounded characters, their stories progress from when Emery is five years over many decades. Expect tears, laughter and, at the centre of it all, a beautiful love story.
Perfect, perfect, perfect!

Wow! What an incredibly moving and heartwarming book. This one had me reaching for the tissues. Highly recommend.
Absolutely wonderful! A refreshing change from my usual genre, I was so invested in Emery's life (and death), that I stayed up until 1am to finish the book.
When Emery first dies, aged 5, she finds Nick waiting for her, a kind of guardian angel or spiritual guide, to help and support her through the realisation that she has died and the transition to wherever her spirit will go next. Nick doesn't usually meet people more than once, but Emery has a rare condition that means her heart stops regularly and until she is revived, she is technically dead and meets Nick again. Over the years, Emery and Nick grow closer and Emery is determined to find out who Nick was when he was alive and why he is stuck in this in-between. As they fall in love, Emery has to choose whether to live her life or live for her next death.
Emery and Nick were fabulously written characters, as was Emery's big sister, Amber. I felt so torn on Emery's behalf and fell a little bit in love with Nick myself!
5 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Becky Hunter and Atlantic for an ARC in return for an honest review.
I would like to start of by thanking the publisher and netgalley for granting me a free e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
Small confession before I get more in depth. I requested this mostly to see if it could get me to cry, I was even counting on it. I mean… the premise sounds absolutely heartbreaking so you can probably imagine my surprise when I ended up shedding zero tears. While it didn’t make me ugly sub (like I was lowkey hoping it would) it did take me on a rollercoaster of emotions.
First of all. Emery and I are definitely not cut from the same cloth. If I would happen to suffer from the same condition as her I would definitely just give in to my fears and stay inside 24/7. Throughout the entire book I was just so in awe of her and the way she just took on life. Was definitely sighing along with her when she just dropped ‘’dead’’ at the most inconvenient of times.
While I did really love Emery as a main character and I wouldn’t have changed a thing about her, I was unable to really enjoy the moments she shared with Nick. I didn’t feel the connection between them at all and was a bit weirded out by their romance, considering the fact that Emery met Nick when she was 5 and he was stuck being a 35 year old (which he stayed for the entire duration of the novel). Not to get into spoilers but i’m not the biggest fan of bittersweet endings and I feel like she just settled for something else you know??
While I did absolutely love everything else about this book, the romance aspect ended up being a bit of a disappointment for me sadly. Rating this 3/5 stars. Will definitely still recommend this to my friends despite this, as I think it has a beautiful message about living your life to the fullest despite being held back by fear.
Becky Hunter has hit me in the feels all over again. I love this author's writing style and the way she is able to make me feel both insanely sad but hopeful all at the same time.
Emery was such a complex character, but who wouldn't be if they'd lived her life? She made some foolish decisions in her youth that put her life at risk, but I understood every one of them. It raised so many questions with me regarding what I would do in the same situation. Would I live my life walking on eggshells and trying to stay safe or would I grasp every opportunity, not knowing which would be my last? Navigating all of that through childhood, teenage years and early adulthood would be conflicting and heartbreaking and this story did such a good job of portraying that.
I found this book emotionally draining at times, but I had to keep picking it up to continue following Emery and her family's stories. I loved all of them and felt their sadness and their happiness as though it was my own. Loved this book and highly recommend.
Wow! This has gone straight into one of my favourite books I've ever read and to be honest I wasn't sure what to think of it before I started. It is heartbreaking and yet absolutely lovely at the same time and it really has stayed with me since i finished and was a real conversation piece with friends when we talked about it. Amazing!
I was hoping so, so badly that my love of Becky’s writing wouldn’t be a one-off after completely falling in love with One Moment… and it wasn’t. I usually take weeks to read a book, but I finished this in three days. Becky is definitely coming up as one of my favourite authors. Her writing has a way of gripping me and completely taking over my emotions. I cried at least five times during this book.
As the book progresses, we learn who Nick really is, which is truly heartbreaking. We also watch how Emery’s condition affects the way she lives and the way people around her treat her. She rebels from being wrapped in cotton wool, pushes boundaries and pushes people
away. But she’s different with Nick—able to relax and let go.
This book covers Emery’s life, and although it skips years at a time, everything slotted together and worked. I really connected to her sister, and her challenges broke my heart.
Thank you to NetGalley, Becky Hunter and Atlantic Books (Corvus) for this DRC in exchange for an honest review.
Meet Me When My Heart Stops by Becky Hunter is a truly original, beautiful and comforting read. Whether you believe in life after death or not, it's noce to have a little bit of whimsy just in case
This book is absolutely beautiful. Emery has a heart condiiton which causes her to experience a type of death should she receive a fright, a shock or the like. The first time this happens is when she is just five and it is also the first time she meets her guardian, Nick, who helps those in the afterlife find their way. This premise immediately caught my attention as it was central to the storyline that Emery would always have the same guardian to guide her each time she experienced this temporary death.
As Emery grows into adulthood, the slow burn begins and the pair become closer. In parallel, in her waking lif, Emery's parents have taken every step to protect their daughter, and at the same time they are protecting her and doing what they think is right, they are truly not letting her live (this will resonate loud as a bell with nyone, anyone who has to live with chronic illness)
Everything about this book is a warm hug, the ups, the downs and everythjing in between. It is a book that tells you everything will be ok no matter what life throws at you. It is a comfort and a real joy to read. It's not my usual genre but I can certainly say Becky Hunter is going on my favourite authors list
Thank you very much to Netgalley, Atlantic Books, Corvus and the author Becky Hunter for this beautful ARC. My review is left voluntarily and all opinions are my own
Such a beautifully written story which pulled me in from the very beginning.
Definitely a book that will stay with me for a very long time.
What a wonderful book. I don’t really know how to describe it other than to say it’s a story of Emery’s life and deaths. We first meet Emery aged 5 when a thorn in her foot causes her heart to stop. This is when her family find out Emery has a heart condition. One in which almost anything could cause her heart to stop and she dies, unless she is resuscitated. It could happen at any time. Her father wants to wrap her in cotton wool and let her do nothing, her mother thinks she should be able to do ‘normal’ things and her older sister Amber just supports her throughout.
Briefly, the first time her heart stopped there was a man who talked to her and helped her feel better. The second time was 7 years later and the same man was there but it wasn’t until her the third time her heart stopped, aged 21, that he told her his name, Nick. Each time her heart stopped Nick was there waiting for her and each time they talked and became closer. Although she leads an exciting and eventful life there is always a little bit of Emery that wants to see Nick again and that can only happen when her heart stops.
Emery is a wonderful character and my heart went out to her as, even with the best intentions, her father was so overprotective her childhood was blighted in not being able to just be herself. I loved her friendship with Bonnie and Colin and her closeness to her sister and it was a shame she didn’t always appreciate it. Emery was really quite a sad character in that she didn’t let herself get close to people because of her condition, I wanted to give her a hug. An emotional story exploring fated love, about family and friendship, about love and desire, about life and death - a unique look at life and death. Tears? At the end, yes!
I knew this book would make me sob, but I didn't think it would make me cry all the water I had in me.
The story starts with Nick "spying" Emery when she was only 5 and dies for the first time. They meet in an "afterlife" but of course she is way too young to understand what is happening to her. She then goes back to the land of living. Why? Because she has a very rare heart condition that in case of sudden scares or unexpected emotions, her heart stops and she dies. However, if her heart is restarted within 5 minutes, she gets to live again.
The story goes on telling about Emery's life, how she lives and how she dies on multiple occasions. She meets Nick every time she dies and, well, they fall for each other. But of course, the only way for them to be together is those moments when Emery dies.
Even though I'm not that much of a romantic reader, this story has left me utterly broken and I don't think I will recover any time soon.
Thanks NetGalley and Atlantic Books for the chance of reading this stunner.
Meet me when my heart stops by Becky hunter is the first book from the author that I have read, and it is better than I was expecting.
We meet Emery who has a heart condition which means her heart can stop at any time. The first time it happened she was five when she pricked her finger on a thorn. When it happens, instead of dying she ends up in the in-between (between life and death), where she meets Nick who is there to give advice onto the next world. Or go back to the life she just left and to live the best life that she can. They develop a close bond between themselves in certain stages in her life that her heart stops, so much that she tells Nick that she doesn’t to leave. But fate returns her back to her life and her loved ones and the people closest to her.
This is a beautifully written and poignant story that will tug at your heartstrings, and I you will think about for a long time. This has a unique storyline and great characters. I liked how each chapter was a different stage in Emery’s life and what impact did it have on her friends and family, I loved this book I couldn’t stop reading until I finished it. This is a special book. 5 stars from me.
This was a great read. I found it emotional with a great and captivating premise. I really cared about the characters and their stories.
"Meet Me When My Heart Stops" by Becky Hunter is a captivating tale that explores the delicate balance between life and the afterlife.
Emery's journey, shaped by her untreatable heart condition, creates a unique narrative filled with emotional depth. The connection between Emery and Nick, her afterlife guide, adds a touch of the supernatural, making it a poignant love story.
The portrayal of Emery's family and friends, especially her overprotective dad and caring sister, Amber, adds a layer of authenticity to the story. The inner struggles Emery faces, torn between the desire for a normal life and her connection with Nick, are compelling and the dynamic relationships with her best friends, Bonnie and Colin, contribute to the richness of the narrative.
Be prepared for an emotional rollercoaster; Hunter masterfully draws you into the characters' lives. While the ending strikes a delicate balance, offering closure and satisfaction, I did find Emery's behaviour frustrating at times. However, the well-crafted plot and wonderful characters make it a must-read.
Grab your tissues because this story will tug at your heartstrings. As someone who rarely sheds tears, I found myself emotionally invested in the characters, especially towards the end of the book.
Overall, the book delivers an intriguing concept, skillful writing, and is an enjoyable reading experience. Highly recommended for those seeking a unique and emotional read.
Thank you so much to the author, publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
