Another unputdownable stellar read by Lia Louis with all the feels! Millie was such a relatable protagonist and to be faced with the predicament she had with the emails OMG! I could feel Millie’s pain and was rooting for the whole way. I absolutely adored Cate and Ralph, I need these friends in my life and would love love love them to have their own book ☺️. Such a dream of a book and as always I can’t wait for whatever Lia writes next! Endless amount of stars and highly recommend!
I was so excited to read this one, it was my first by Lia. I loved the premise of this book, and couldn’t wait to start, however even though I enjoyed it, I didn’t love it.
Even though it was a quick read, I felt the storyline was a bit slow and a wee bit predictable.
I did like Jack, he was sweet, trying to prove romance/love doesn’t come with strings. The friendships that Millie has are fab, you could feel the strong connection with them.
The who done it twist was a good one, can’t say I seen it coming.
I have eight perfect hours on my tbr, think I might need to bump it up.
I love a rom-com and I did love the sound of this book - kind of a modern day ‘read of a personal diary’ when all her personal thoughts she had saved into drafts were sent out. Can you imagine the horror? New author for me and will look out for more of her books.
4.5 stars
I've been a big fan of all the Lia Louis books that I've read so far and this was no different.
I definitely enjoyed the overall concept and this felt like a proper rom com too, which I definitely appreciated.
I sped through this over a weekend and basically couldn't put it down.
I can't wait to see what Lia Louis does next and she's easily become an auto-read/buy author for me.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
First of all thank you for approving my request!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The authors writing style had me hooked throughout this book.
I didn't want it to end, a book I really couldn't put down.
‘This is ‘The Moment.’ And how do I even get out of this? The damage is already done. The worst has already happened. All of my email drafts have somehow been sent. Every single last one.’
Yes, as the quote above describes how many of us have that dreaded feeling when we read that quote? How many of us have drafted an email that is the bare-naked emotional truth of how we feel in that specific moment, but never send? We know we have, and we cannot even fathom how mortifying that would be for it to enter the real world and not just stay in our heads! The truth has two sides and somewhere therein, the actual truth hides. For Millie, her truths are all extensions of her emotions, observations, and experiences. Her draft emails are her therapy, these emails contain what she wants to say but can’t. We loved the premise of this story and empathised with the cringe, the mortifying embarrassment, and the sheer horror, however, on the other side of the coin, how freeing would it be to just let it all out there, within reason of course. We LOVE the below quote from Millie’s dad:
“Feeling things is what we’re supposed to do, as a human, but not everyone is always going to sit with something you feel and be comfortable with it. And it’s not up to you to take that discomfort from them, especially not if it means trading your own truth for it.”
Millie is a sweet girl who is somewhat lost, full of dreams but stuck within her self-imposed ‘safety net.’ We loved her friendships, her sense of humour and her inner musings through the email scandal at work and her consequential friendship dramas. We crushed on her crush, and we willed her to find herself and bloom. The life of Millie Chandler is quite the journey! Sweet, mortifying, quirky and funny with a bit of romance.
We’ve read and loved every single book by Lia Louis, her writing style, her depth of character and emotion. She really is a favourite. This time we sadly felt like something was missing and whilst there’s one scene with Millie, Jack and a rhubarb farm that made us swoon emotionally and believe in their connection in that very moment, it was the only time we felt it. There just wasn’t enough time, enough depth and enough intense emotion throughout this story. It’s hard, because we felt at a loss and it seemed as though there were stories within the story that were disconnected, a collection of emotionally profound yet incohesive moments rather than flawlessly fluid, which is what we’re used to from this Author. That being said, we enjoyed many parts of it tremendously and will eagerly grab Lia Louis’ next book with much anticipation!
A cute story but a little pacey. I liked the characters and how they built but it felt a bit protracted at times.
i’ve enjoyed lia louis’ other novels ‘eight perfect hours’ and ‘the key to my heart’.
earlier this year, i read and absolutely loved ‘i hope this doesn’t find you’ by ann liang, and this has a pretty similar premise which was why i picked it up.
i absolutely loved our mc millie, she was so hilariously charming to read from her perspective and living through her pov.
the romance was sweet and had a pure, genuine feel that has me pining over every interaction of millie and jack even weeks after finishing the book, just replaying the cutest moments.
so funny and witty, although a little corny but honestly that’s part of its charm for me.
This book was really fun, I would have liked to have read a little more on the problems it would have caused from sending so many emails that weren’t ever intended. I agree there is so much we leave unsaid and some things we just need a little more bravery but others are just unkind. This was proof of that. Fun to read and also to listen to on audio too.
I love books by this author. This was a fantastic read it was heart warming and funny and has a cast of great characters. Millie was charming and relatable and I loved her story. A fab book that I would definetely recomend.
The perfect story about the implications of email chains, not speaking out, and things being left unsaid. It was a lovely read.
My Thoughts: as far as romantic comedies go this is up there as one of my favourites, it had me laughing out loud very early on and didn’t let up on the humour throughout.
We’re following Millie as she goes through everyone’s worst nightmare, she’s been writing draft emails with all the inner thoughts and feelings the truths she wants to tell people.. and somehow they all get sent overnight, technology is brilliant until it doesn’t work right? 😂
Not long after, her colleague Jack finds her hiding in a room with a cardboard cut out of Gary Lineker, reassures her that things will be ok and what follows is a friendship/relationship that will make you jealous, full of banter, burgers and witty moments.
Millie has a couple of best friends in her life that are there for her through it all, they read all the emails with her, talked her through her options and were just there for moral support, one provided healthy snacks and the other provided alcohol 😅
This is a book that has stayed with me since finishing it & makes me smile every time I think of it, I think it’s fair to say I will be reading more from Lia Louis in the future, although this one will be a hard one to top!
This book was hilarious and I was cringing the entire time on behalf of Millie and the contents of her emails.
Lia Louis is one of my go-to authors - I will forever grab her books without even reading the blurb just because I have loved them all!
This one was no exception.
Imagine getting to work one day and being hauled before your bosses because every snarky email reply you've ever drafted (with absolutely no intention of ever sending) in reply to annoying things your family, friends and coworkers have said/done have been sent out in one bulk move.
This is what happens to Millie and she must desperately work out the best way to tackle damage control without hurting those she loves the most.
Such a cute, funny and lovely story, full of all the best kinds of characters.
I adored this and will be recommending it to everyone!
Oh, I loved this book!! I can honestly say that I love the thought of typing out emails saying what I would love to say - however, there is no way I could do it now after hearing Millies story!!
Millie is instantly such a likeable character and even though it's a really bad situation you almost can't help but laugh as she is going into full scale meltdown mode, cakes and everything! There is some really lovely scenes between her friends A.E (that'll make sense when you read the book!) even though she has bared all in her emails to them about what she really thinks!
I thought that there were parts of the storyline that were so clever and they were almost leading you to think one thing and then it wasn't quite that. I was praying that Jack was being honest and I felt very on edge as I was reading, as I just wasn't sure. There were some beautiful scenes depicted in the book and it really was a lovely read.
I loved our supporting characters, they were really well written with some very quirky ones included! But they all just added to the story and made it even better. I have to give a special mention to Ralph as he just seemed like the cutest friend / flatmate that anyone could ever ask for.
A fabulous read that had me laughing out loud at points and almost wanting to cry at others!
I read through this book so quickly because I really enjoyed it! I loved how it kept me on my toes in finding out who was behind it all. It's definitely a testament to the story that I've been thinking about what I deserve and need in my life. I do wish that she hadn't spent so much time dealing with the Owen situation, but honestly, toxic and abusive relationships take time to dissect.
Great book, would recommend, would read again!
Firstly thsnk you to the publishers for my chance to review.
Lia is a fantastic author whose books I've previously enjoyed.
This is a lighter read but still impactful sending a life affirming message throughout.
Sometimes stuff goes wrong and it's how you embrace the next step that matters.
Fun, uplifting and entertaining this I's a great rom com.
"Better Left Unsent" has an intriguing premise. The main character, Millie, is very relatable and easy to root for. However, some parts of the story dragged a bit, such as Millie's job and her parents' issues. However, I understand that these sections were necessary for character development.
One aspect of the story that didn't quite work for me was the details focusing on Owen. I felt that it wasn't given enough attention to justify its inclusion and that it detracted from the overall plot. Nevertheless, I think the author did a great job with the character Jack, and I wish we could have seen more of his story.
On a positive note, the author's writing style is commendable, and her character development is top-notch. The characters she has created are not just words on a page but living, breathing individuals with distinct personalities, making for a quick read.
While this may not be my personal favourite, I can see how others might find it more enjoyable, especially if they appreciate a slower-paced, character-driven narrative.
Firstly this one gave me anxiety straight from the beginning 🤣 it’s bad enough when you accidentally send someone the wrong text message by mistake but send a full draft inbox of you’re suppressed thoughts is my idea of what hell is!
I did like the concept of the story and how Millie had to comeback from such a catastrophe and my favourite thing about the book would have to be Jack he was really dreamy.
My only niggle was that the first half dragged a little and got a bit repetitive but once I got the half way point o was really invested and flew through to the end.
A very easy read. If you want something light hearted, predictable and fun then this book is for you.
It won’t blow your socks off but it will keep you entertained. A good book for the poolside.
