Thanks to PRH & Net Galley for this early copy! I though this was brilliant! I really liked the look of the cover and the description sounded right up my street. Safe to say i wasn't disappointed and thoroughly enjoyed this clever, funny and witty plot. It has a great cast of characters and fantastic style of writing. It was great reading from the main character, Al’s, point of view and you can’t help but be taken along for a ride on this one! Would love for this to form some part of a series and am looking forward to seeing this publish next April!
We join Al as he's spending some time at His Majesty's Pleasure. But how did an "interloper" who spends his life staying in rich people's empty houses, without their knowledge of course, end up in prison?
Al takes us on a story of murder, dodgy business deals and an expensive house or two. And reminds us why we should ALWAYS follow the rules.
This was an enjoyable and fun read of adventure and misadventure with twists and turns thrown in for good measure.
A fun read about the main character Al who lives in wealthy people's second homes while their real owners are away…. That is until Al and his “co-workers” Elle, Em and Jonny stumble onto a murder.
I really enjoyed this story, it’s an easy and quirky read
Excellent. Fast-paced. Tongue-in-cheek humour. A very different novel that had me on the edge of the seat, Highly recommended.
A good, fun read. I loved the characters, and the convoluted plot. I will definitely look out for other books by this author,
I very much enjoyed this book. It's great fun, fast paced and quirkily written. The main character is personable and easy to like - and I didn't think he was half as bad as he seemed to think himself. I enjoyed meeting the other characters too - each one with their own traits, tics and uniqueness.
The story (plot) is somewhat fantastic but that's no hardship. It's nice to read fiction that doesn't try to put the real world right, sometimes, and it's not as if there aren't little hints at injustices along the way.
Recommended if you want a light, amusing mystery with a fair bit of tension thrown in.
“Al” is the main character of this story and he has some very bad luck along the way. He spends most of his time living in other people’s houses while they are away – the owners have no idea that this is what he does. He respects their space and does not take anything from the property. In his view the house is empty why not stay in it. He goes to his latest “home” but unfortunately the owner returns as he has forgotten his passport. He escapes and decides to go to his go to house. Unfortunately when he gets there some other “interlopers” are already insitu. This starts to be a catalogue of dramas including a murder. The story, for me, comes and goes and I found it amusing in places but on the whole it was not a story for me as it was a little slow in others
On a real run of good books, and picked this up. I wasn't disappointed! Totally different to a lot of other bog standard thrillers, with housebreakers being at the key of this story - this one will do well, and is totally different to exBOTM The Sanctuary which wasn't quite my cup of tea. I've already recommended this to a few colleagues and am excited for the publication for this!
This book drew me in right from the first page. Full of humour and colourful characters who find themselves mixed up in all kinds of drama. It got progressively more far fetched as it went on but this just added to the absurdity of the book. A fun read.
I’m the calling this my book or the year already.
I really enjoyed this book, Andrew Hunter Murray knows what he’s doing..
What a wonderful story. All of the stars.
I really enjoyed this book. It was fun read. Easy to read and to follow. I found it funny at times. I hope others do to. Highly recommended this.
Meet Al. It isn't his real name, but it's going to have to do.
Al is an unconventional, unofficial, and most definitely un-legal "housesitter" for some very exclusive properties. No, he's not a squatter, just a very temporary, rent-free tenant while the owner is...elsewhere.
When things don't go exactly according to plan at one property, Al returns to his failsave backup bolthole to find it's occupied.
Meet Elle, Em and Jonny. They're sort of in the same line of work as Al.
And when all four are almost-witnesses to a murder, things start to get very difficult and complicated indeed.
Brilliantly funny, and a great thriller
Not really my cup if tea. I found the style of writing quite hard to get in to and just didn't grab me like some books.
This book is so far fetched that it's brilliant! Told from the main characters point of view, Al - isn't his real name but he won't tell us what is - takes the reader on the most bizarre journey of murder, spies, cyber crime and more. I loved the style this was written in and will look for more from this author.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC in return for my honest and unbiased opinion.
A great premise and some wonderful characters!
Al is a great loner, until he realises being not alone can actually be better- more fun, more support when dead bodies land in your lap etc.!
The idea of stumbling into a murder whilst committing your own crime is the epitome of bad luck and for the unlikely foursome of not-really-friends-yet triggers a desperate need to clear their own names with some dubious investigations all whilst swerving the police.
Everyone brings something to the table, although mostly in a semi-incompetent way and the constant panic and tension makes the book fast paced and great to read.
Personally this wasn't to my tastes, I feel like the main character spent a lot of time telling us how smart he was but acted quite dim at times.
It felt more like a made for TV drama. But it was easy to read and I could see why other would enjoy it.
I wasn't to sure what expect from the title of the book, but I was more than pleasantly surprised.
It has some brilliantly written characters and the plot keeps you engaged throughout.
Poor Al is not having a great day and things are going to get so much worse.
Al has an interesting sideline away from his freelance work as a photographer.
He is a interloper, which is a fancy way of saying that he lives in people's homes while they are away without their knowledge.
It's a great way to stay in some of the most expensive postcodes in Britain without ever having to pay rent!
But his latest break in has him nearly caught when the owner comes back unexpectedly.
Al thinks on his feet and only just gets away with it. Feeling downhearted he returns to one house that he knows will always be empty but to his surprise he finds three young people doing exactly the same as him!
The story unfolds from there with some wonderfully wicked humour and some crazy stunts along the way.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for an advance copy of this book in return for a review.
I very much enjoyed reading this story about a rather unorthodox house sitter who ends up caught up in a murder mystery with a gang of likeminded interlopers. There was plenty of action as the interlopers tried to solve the mystery before the police with lots of comic moments mixed in.
I felt as if the book veered a little bit off course in the third act, with new locations and plot points introduced late on, But overall very enjoyable and I will definitely read more of Andrew Hunter Murray.
This book was really fun. Crazy and unbelievable but enjoyable.
Al breaks into big expensive houses, seemingly for fun. Things go a bit wrong when he meets a group of 3 who are doing a similar thing.
At first it was a bit slow but once things started to go wrong the story whizzed along. Its amusing, tongue in cheek stuff.
Would make a great tv show too.
What a romp! Murder, cyber crime, breaking and entering, and a little bit of romance - this book has it all. A thoroughly enjoyable read - British humour at its best.
