Okay, while the aunties are still entertaining, but the story itself was absurd just like the 2nd book. Don’t get me wrong, while it made me smile in some parts but i think i have enough with this series. Thank you Netgalley for gifting me this e-ARC
I was delighted to find there was a third book in this delightfully madcap series – Meddy and her Aunts have been some of my favourite literary people to spend time with over the last few years. As expected this book was full of the warmth and fun that underpinned the previous and that allows the over the top feel of the rest of the plot to sweep us along.
Meddy is a delightful character and her love for her Aunts shines through even as they find ever more ways to frustrate her.
This time Meddy, her new husband Nathan and her Aunts need to contend with a kidnapping (that may or may not involve a mob boss). Inevitably things slip more and more out of Meddy’s control the more involved her Aunties get. Add to this the constant questions about when Meddy is going to have a baby now that she’s married and she could be forgiven for hiding under her duvet and refusing to come out! She doesn’t of course – someone needs to keep a level head after all.
As with the other books in this series I also loved the glimpses into a culture different from my own, from the expected behaviours to the celebration of events.
I do think this is a series that you probably need to read the first one of before jumping in further on so do check out the brilliant Dial A for Aunties if you haven’t already!
Quick easy read. Loved the relationships between the aunties and Meddy and ofcourse Nathan. Good end to the series as I have loved them all but first book was definitely the best!
It's the Chinese New Year, a time for joy and celebration...
Freshly back from their honeymoon, Meddy and Nathan join the Aunties in Jakarta to partake in a family gathering. Amidst the festivities, an old flame of Second Aunt's arrives, bearing extravagant gifts. However, not all of these gifts were intended for them.
Suddenly, one of the gifts goes missing, placing Meddy and the Aunties amid a feud between Jakarta's most influential business tycoons – and in grave danger. To protect her loved ones, Meddy must orchestrate a search party, a daring break-in, and even a kidnapping. It may seem like an impossible task. But with the Aunties by her side, nothing is truly impossible... just a tad complicated.
Once again, Meddy and her aunties are back for one final adventure. As you would expect from Jesse Sutanto, this book contains the same comical exploits. A quick fun read and a great ending to the series.
This might be my favorite series of all time. Jesse Suntanto knows how to write a banging book! With crazy fun characters and an unbelievable plot this was the perfect book to start the new year.
This series has been an utterly ridiculous thrill ride from the start, and I am grateful for every second I have spent in Meddy's life. Just like the other two books, this is a funny and easy read that I will return to whenever I need a pick-me-up. Jesse Sutanto is a master!
I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review
I liked the premise of this, but somehow this book just didn't capture me. I found the main characters a bit annoying and not as funny as they thought they were. The plot was a bit slow in my opinion and only picked up towards the very end of the book. The ending itself was too smooth and ridiculous even for an already ridiculous story. This may have been more fun to read had I read the previous two instalments, but having finished this I don't think I'll got back for more.
Love the aunties so much and I’m sure they resonate with a lot of other cultures around the world. This is a great series and Sutanto’s books/writing are great for young adults or readers looking for something light to get sucked into.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this eARC of 'The Good, the Bad, and the Aunties' by Jesse Q. Sutanto.
The final Aunties book is upon us and my goodness we've been through a lot with this cast. Weddings, death, drama, Jesse Q. Sutanto truly gave us everything. This book honestly may be one of my favourite ones in this trilogy and the plot was just so so so fun!! Jesse Q. Sutanto, you are a diamond.
I just love this series so so much!!
I loved being back with Meddy, Nathan and the Aunties again. It’s completely ridiculous the antics they get up to but I just love it.
Such a perfect cosy mystery with the right amount of comedy.
A fun filled finale to what has been an entertaining trilogy. Meddy and her aunts once again get themselves swept up in an adventure that could only happen to them. This could definitely be read as a stand alone but it's worth reading the previous two for the references and for the giggles. This book follows a similar process as the previous two so you aren't going to get anything new here but if familiarity is your jam, then that may not be an issue for you.
Read if you enjoy:
Aunties and mamas mispronouncing everything
Feminine energy
Fast paced, light hearted reads
Denzels in distress (see first point)
Learning about Indonesian culture
This was just as fabulous as I expected it to be. I absolutely adore the aunties, they are wacky, excruciatingly hard work and yet lovable at the same time. These books are so clever and I can well recommend taking the time to read all of them.
"The Good, the Bad, and the Aunties" wasn't my favorite part of the series. There were some fun sections and I liked the general set-up, but the ending was somewhat ridiculous and some of the aunts antics just got on my nerves.
The first part of the series was definitely the best.
An excellent follow up to the previous antics by the aunties, this comic thriller is everything I was hoping for! A light and exciting read, ripe with cultural references and mystery.
The Good, The Bad and The Aunties is the third (and potentially final) book in the Aunties series and it definitely lives up to the previous two!
This time Meddy, her new husband Nathan and the Aunties are on their way to Jakarta to celebrate Chinese New Year with their extended family, before the newlyweds head off on their honeymoon.
Nothing is ever straightforward with this bunch, however, and they soon find themselves embroiled in a mafia dispute.
I have loved the Aunties series – they never fail to make me laugh and their crazy antics (intermingled with Ma nagging for a grandbaby) made the story a real page turner. I really hope Jesse Q Sutanto decides to continue their story somehow (a spin-off perhaps) as I would love to follow more of their adventures.
A highly recommended, light-hearted read!
This book is perfect if you're looking for a laugh out loud cosy adventure mystery.
I was hoping for a ridiculous wonderful story, and it absolutely delivered.
Meddy and her husband arrive in Jakarta to spend New Year's with her loud generous family, and are all caught up in the celebrations with full fervour. That is until Second Aunt's childhood love and a mob boss comes knocking. From there chaos erupts and continues to snowball.
I had so much fun reading this, and flew through it. It's the third and final book in the series and for me it left too many threads open to be fully satisfying. Some plot twists also feel dropped in unnaturally without any of the usual hints earlier on you'd expect, and this took away from the overall experience a little for me.
However, this was still first and foremost a very enjoyable time, and I'd really recommend it.
I love this series but unfortunately I didn’t find ‘The Good, The Bad and the Aunties’ as funny or compelling as the previous entries. As always, Meddy and Nathan were the least interesting characters. I enjoyed the change of setting but I wonder if maybe the Aunties have had their final outing
3.5 stars
This is a good homage to the series. I enjoyed the family interactions not just with each other but especially with Nathan.
The story was not anything revolutionary and it was on the trend as the first two so don't expect anything fresh. It was a good, solid read but I don't feel there was a need for this third one in the series.
It absolutely breaks my heart to say this, but I think my time with the Aunties is done.
Chaos upon chaos was just a little too much for me this time and I really struggled to read the second half of the book.
*** Spoilers, do not read ahead if you don't want minor plot details***
I love the Aunties, Meddy and Nathan. I'm glad they were able to enjoy a honeymoon and spend new year with the extended family, but after a disaster with red packets and Nathan was a guest against his will, this is where I struggled.
There's only so much trouble that one family can get into and even the deep love and tenacity of the family couldn't hold me this time. :(
I didn’t enjoy this one as much as the first two, it didn’t grab me as much and I felt quite bored. It also felt like this could have been a lot shorter to tie up some loose ends. There was still the same humour throughout but I found it hard to stay focused
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this arc
