This book was just as beautiful as the first, I loved the development of Emily and how far she has come. This book introduces us to two new companions, Emily's niece and an older work colleague. Adriene and Rose were both fantastic additions to Wendal and Emily's relationship. This book drew me in so much deeper than I thought it could, we get to explore some new places, and the dynamic, although different, still feels as amazing as before. Emily has harder battles in this one, and seeing her rise to the challenge was amazing. If you loved the first one this one will not disappoint.

Absolutely gorgeous!

I adored the first book in this series and this was one of my most anticipated releases of all time and it did not disappoint! The descriptions in this book are incredible, visceral, magical - the image of a lily pad filled cup of tea was so beautiful. The development in the story felt natural and even though the world felt a lot more expansive than in the first, nothing felt forced, it was a seamless transition into a bigger storyline and world. It is so easy to fall completely in love with every single character in these stories. I would highly recommend reading these, athough I eagerly anticipate the release of the audiobook for this as they are done beautifully and really bring the book to life.

The only downside was that the ending of the book felt a teeny bit rushed and like it was almost a little too easy in the end. In the first book I felt like she Emily had to work to escape the Faerie King and we got to really explore and see her thought process and how she used her extensive knowledge to her advantage, however in this I felt the ending a little fast and the single clever act on Emily's part was predictable. This did not however dampen my love for the book. I would recommend these to absolutely everyone! Already holding my breath for the next instalment!

As it seems I have become quite the fan of this series and of Heather Fawcett. Once again, she managed to write a beautiful and interesting story !
I loved the characters, the new setting and the lore of course. The writing was great and the pacing exactly what I needed!
My only issue was that new what to expect and the ending was a little underwhelming... In my opinion though, it's not that important, because the most interesting part of both this book and the previous is the middle of the story, the build up to the final part. How the writer describes everything, the lore and the dynamics between the characters.
I am definitely recommending this book and I can't wait to read the next one !

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with the book, in exchange for my honest review.

Ever since finishing the first book, which wasn't even that long ago, I've been looking forward to reading the second book in this series. In the first book I had to get used to the writing style during the first few chapters, but by the end of the book I was totally invested and really needed to know how the story would continue and what adventures would be waiting for our heroes in the next book. Luckily Orbit granted me a review copy through Netgalley.

What I absolutely loved about this book is that we get to see a little more of Cambridge, the other professors, the students and the struggles and dangers surrounding research and publishing papers on the fair folk. Of course, it doesn't last that long, but still. It really helped getting a better idea of who the characters were, who they had become and who they wanted to be and therefore it made them feel a little more real and I got even more invested in their journey.

And what a lovely journey it is! This time we're traveling to Austria, an area I'm very familiar with myself, to find that one door that might bring Bambleby home. I like how the author described the snow, the local culture and how many new characters were introduced, while the book didn't forget the amazing side characters we met during the previous adventure in Norway. Despite all the fantasy elements, it really feels like maybe there could be faerie doors in Austria.

Just like the first book this book once more presents a lovely mix of research, romance and a touch of danger. Due to the writing style we sort of know that things are gonna sort of turn out okay in the end, it's hard to keep on writing a diary when you die after all, but somehow the writing style really works to strengthen Emily's character and personality. It fits her. It's part of her. And her descriptions are sometimes hilarious and sometimes terrifying.

The book ends with a really nice starting point for the next book. I'm looking forward to reading it already!

We are introduced to the quieter scholarly life of Emily & Wendell at the start of this sequel, having returned from their recent trip and back to 'normal' life. What I absolutely loved about the opening of this book is how quickly we are thrown into the action. I loved the slow start, the meeting at the cafe, very cozy feels, with the subtle indications of what's to come with Emily meeting a stranger en-route to her breakfast meeting. We're introduced to 2 new characters who are suddenly thrown into the adventure. It feels much more fast paced than the Encyclopedia of Faeries from the off set. With the first I found I was able to put it down between chapters and not in a massive rush to pick it back up, whereas with Map of the Otherlands I am desperate to continue reading, to continue on the journey and find the answers alongside Emily & co.
The journal style writing is really growing on me, it feels more immersive and atmospheric than 3rd party storytelling. I'm really enjoying it and I think previously having Encyclopaedia of Fairies on audiobook has really helped as I've been able to read this with an accent in my head, if that makes any sense to anyone out there 😅
I absolutely love the way Fawcett has evolved Emily and Wendell's relationship, it's not overpowering and doesn't distract from everything else that's going on, yes it is very much a driving force in this series but not to the point it's overwhelmingly a romance novel.
I've absolutely loved these books so far and already can't wait for the next one!

Good news! I LOVED this book. I'm a bit shocked about this to be honest, because I didn't particularly like the first one. This book had the sense of adventure and wonder that the first book kind of lacked in my opinion. The whole cast of characters was wonderful. My favourite is still Poe the brownie from Ljosland- so adorable! I enjoyed Emily as a character so much more than in the first book and I felt like her relationship with Wendell was much more fleshed out.
Overall, I definitely recommend this book, even if, like me, you didn't love the first one!

I generally try to temper my expectations before delving into the second book in any series, especially those where the first book is so delightful. It’s often the case that sophomore novels tend to meander, lose the plot for pointless detours, and lack the luster of the pilot. Suffice to say that this is no such sophomore book. It’s equally spritely and adept at luring you in with rich lore and captivating characters. Once in a while, I think the story is beginning to trudge along familiar tropes of the oversaturated romantasy genre. Suddenly, it takes a left turn and speeds off into something less monotonous.

I completely adore this series. Emily is the rare fantasy heroine with believable human flaws and well-plotted character growth. As far as morally gray high fae fantasy men go, Wendell Bambleby* already stands above the rest for me. For one, he doesn’t growl or snarl or curl his lips (though he is still rich, powerful, and unbearably handsome). And two, he never underestimates or undermines Emily or her competence. What is sexier than that? (*So completely brilliant naming a romance hero Bambleby; has there ever been an unsexier name? It’s such a good trope subversion that I am still giggling from it two books in.)

What sets this book apart is the lore. The world is so detailed and well-thought-out that one can easily picture living in it. Furthermore, the author is never heavy-handed with exposition and doesn’t launch into lengthy descriptions in the name of world-building. Another bonus: all the supporting cast are well fleshed out, none are caricatures, and some will even surprise with their complexity.

Once again I was delighted to be immersed in this wonderful alternate early 20th-Century world that Fawcett has created, where obsessed academics study the fickle Fae that live side-by-side with us ordinary humans. Someone somewhere described these books as "academia light" and whilst I agree for the most part, I feel that this categorization doesn't do justice to both the beauty AND horrors of Faerie that our titular heroine encounters.

This time we are swept into the high mountains of Austria, to another small town beset with wicked Fae. This time Emily and Co. - for she has acquired two new companions in addition to the indolent Wendell - are on a secret mission to find a door into a specific kingdom (if you've read the first book, you'll know which one). They cover up their intent with a mission to research the disappearance of renowned researcher de Gray decades before. But predictably it's not long before their encounters with the folk turn both violent and near-deadly. Emily must use all her formidable knowledge, skill and courage to overcome Fae intent on harming her and her companions; and find a way home for the man she has come to love.

I loved this book just as much as the first, and could not put it down. I thought the addition of both fellow grumpy colleague Rose and Emily's niece Ariadne brought some extra perspective and fun to the story. But it is Wendell the Unbothered King who has my whole heart - who could not love a hero that abhors mess and will not go forth into public without sartorial perfection; yet can create castles from the air and tear his enemies in two when riled.

Very much looking forward to Emily and Wendell's adventures in Book 3.

Heather Fawcett is just incredible at writing cosy fantasies, nothing really compares.

After having read and liked Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Fairies I was excited to continue with the story and see where this series goes. And I'm glad to say it truly didn't disappoint.

The writing is as always a highlight of these books. The way Fawcett describes places really allows the reader to immerse themselves in the world and it creates a clear picture in one's mind.

The characters are so lovable it makes the reading experience that much more enjoyable. If you liked Emily in the first book then I feel like you'll like her even more in this one. I love an intelligent and caring protagonist as it makes it incredibly easy to root for her. And Wendel is probably my favorite character in Map of the Otherlands.

I really enjoyed this one and I can't wait for other people to read too so I can rave about it more.

I would like to thank Little Brown Book Group UK for sending me an arc and letting me give my honest review of Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands.

You guyyyyys, you guys…This was even better than the first one! I did not think this possible, but here we are! The adventures and quests are on another level in this book. Wendells background is in the forefront, and we get to experience faerie and a plethora of different fae creatures. The magic systems continue to expand and grow and will enchant you. We also get introduced to two new characters in this book, whom I really enjoyed, not at first I will admit, but they truly grew on me. My favourite is also back in this one, Poe. I love that little guy, even though I’m pretty sure he looks quite scary in real life 😅 I also screamed when I flipped to the last page, we are getting a THIRD book! So happy as I’m not prepared to say goodbye to Emily, Wendell, Shadow and Poe ♥️

I’m so happy to say that my most anticipated read of the year exceeded all my expectations.

This is the sequel to Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries and does not disappoint. After their adventures in Hrafnsvik, Emily has decided to help Wendell find the doorway to his realm, and create her own Map to the faerie lands in the doing so. And after Wendell is attacked by faerie assassins sent by his stepmother finding his door becomes a much bigger priority, but this time they are joined by Emily’s niece and another professor who doesn’t have a very opinion of Wendell.

This was such a great sequel that really develops on everything from the first book.
We are introduced to many more species of the fae and we get to learn and see much more of the faerie realms.

At the beginning we see Emily as we last left her, solitary and completely wrapped up in her work. However, in this we get to see her battle more with her emotions, see how she interacts with her family and tries to navigate her familial ties, which she isn’t always great at. I also don’t think I have ever related so much to a book character before.

I didn’t think I could love Wendell anymore but I was proven wrong. We get to see more of his fae side in this. And of course we have our new characters that just add a whole new dynamic to the story.

The one thing I was most excited to seeing was the development of Emily and Wendell’s romance. Again this was something that did not disappoint, the growth felt very authentic and very them. I also like that while it has more of a presence in this book it still doesn’t take over from the rest of the story.

Overall, this was everything I was hoping it would be and I can see this series becoming an all time favourite of mine.

I think I've never been more excited to be approved for an ARC than after finishing Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries. Map of the Otherlands promised another adventure with Emily, Wendell, and Shadow, and let me tell you something: the sequel not only reached my absolutely ridiculous expectations - it exceeded them.

I once again, fell in love with Emily’s awkwardness and Wendell’s charm, with their constant banter and teasing, their friendship and companionship. There was something so familiar, yet still exciting about it, and it truly felt like coming home.

The story, even more dynamic than the first one, was full of new adventures riddles, twists, and turns. It made it hard to put the book down, and when I finally did, I couldn't stop thinking about it. I was afraid of missing Ljosland too much, but the Alps were just as magical with their own charm (and a fair share of trouble).

I cannot recommend Map of the Otherlands enough, and I'm already excited to see what’s coming next.

Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands was perfection and was pure enjoyment to read. I was in love with 'Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries however Heather Fawcett took book 2 to another level.
I was hooked from the beginning being thrown into Emily's daily life at Cambridge with twists and turns happening throughout the start.

This book was Whimsical, playful and quirky whilst also providing a sense of importance for Emily's work, which I think made the series very lovable and such a cosy read.

Key Points:
- Darker Magic
- Immersive atmosphere
- Playful Banter between FMC and MMC
- Academic Journal
- More Romance
- Amazing Character Development
- Strong and Determined FMC

This book starts with Emily back at Cambridge university having written her encyclopaedia, published her findings from her previous adventure and then sets her onto another adventure/ quest for an array of different faerie related reasons. Carried over from book 1 they are still searching for Wendells mysterious door for him to return back to his Fae lands. Emily believes a missing researcher (De Grey) might have stumbled upon this when searching in Austria.
The beginning of their search around their new village took Emily, Wendell, Ariadne (Emily's Niece) and Rose (a rival academic and head of department) into the mountains to search for faerie so that Emily could complete yet another piece of work; a map of faerie realms and their doors.

This book is full of captivating action and is told to us via Emily in the form of her academic journal entries.

I loved the instant build up of this book and there was a gripping plot pulling in readers from the start, making this an excellent sequel. The plot picks up where the previous book ended allowing a continuation of flow. It did not rehash old information providing a new insight into Emily and Wendells lives whilst also introducing new and entertaining characters to build the plot further.

The world building was very good in this book which made it more immersive and engaging. I was able to picture the setting in Austria a lot better than I could the previous village in book 1. Adding a better depth for the readers and really bought me into the world Emily was exploring.

Emily's tough and to the point nature remains the same as before providing such a great balance between her and Wendell who is very laid back. Her niece Ariadne is also very similar to Wendell with a need to please Emily whilst working alongside her. I believe these balances in characters allowed for Emily to give more emotion and feeling to the story as it progresses. This tough nature also provides whimsical entertainment as there is a lot of 'disagreement'/ 'banter' between Emily and Wendell throughout adding light to the story and allowing amazing character development from the pair.

Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherland includes more romance than the previous book allowing for a deeper insight into Emily and Wendells relationship allowing the readers to connect and understand Wendells infatuation. The romance is not a needed part of the story as obviously Emily is writing academic journals however it was lovely to see the blossoming romance between the pair without it overshadow the plot.

Wendell having been exposed as high Folk (A Prince) in book 1 and the beginning of this book meant that we saw a lot more of his Fae side come out in the adventures and day to day living. Which added more fun and insight to the story and enhanced my love for him even more.

Ariadne (Emily's Niece) was a wonderful additional character. Her bubbly nature and enthusiasm complemented Emily well and bought out a softer side to Emily as the book progressed.

There are themes of darker magic within compared to book 1 with the addition of several magical creatures who were a lot more dangerous than the faeries previously discovered adding seat gripping suspense to the story.

I cannot remember any of the locals like I could for book 1, as they did not really play much of a part in this adventure or contribute greatly to Emily's discoveries. Some advice and some help was given however it was not as big of a plot as it played in book 1.

I am still grateful for Emily's footnotes within this book. It provided extra information and allowed me to engage and understand the Faeries better without taking up massive amount of text. It provided the information needed in a clear and concise way allowing for the story to continue flowing.

Overall I loved this story and I cannot wait to see what happens in the future and where Emily's research will take her next.

This series just keeps getting better!

In Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands, we continue following Emily, the Cambridge scholar of faerie folklore, as she tries to find a door to Wendell's realm in Faerie. I loved the new side characters we got to know in this second instalment of the series, such as Emily's niece, Ariadne, and another scholar from the university, Rose.

This is perfect for cosy fantasy readers and also for people who love the world of academia, but don't necessarily like the dark side of it. I liked that this second book continued using the format of a journal because it makes us as readers feel closer to these characters.

I can't wait for book 3 because I cannot get enough of these characters!

Thank you very much to Orbit/Little, Brown Book Group UK and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

I gave Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands 4,5 stars

Emily Wilde is a genius scholar of faerie folklore—she just wrote the world’s first comprehensive of encylopaedia of faeries. She’s learned many of the secrets of the Hidden Folk on her adventures . . . and also from her fellow scholar and former rival, Wendell Bambleby.

Because Bambleby is more than infuriatingly charming. He’s an exiled faerie king on the run from his murderous mother, and in search of a door back to his realm. So despite Emily’s feelings for Bambleby, she’s not ready to accept his proposal of marriage. Loving one of the Fair Folk comes with secrets and danger.

And she also has a new project to focus a map of the realms of faerie. While she is preparing her research, Bambleby lands her in trouble yet again, when assassins sent by Bambleby’s mother invade Cambridge. Now Bambleby and Emily are on another adventure, this time to the picturesque Austrian Alps, where Emily believes they may find the door to Bambley’s realm, and the key to freeing him from his family’s dark plans.

But with new relationships for the prickly Emily to navigate and dangerous Folk lurking in every forest and hollow, Emily must unravel the mysterious workings of faerie doors, and of her own heart.

-------- REVIEW --------

Wow, what a journey! I have read both book 1 and 2 this month and I must say this second book was my favorite. The first book was a bit slow in the beginning, but this one was exciting already from the start with the assassins trying to kill them at Cambridge. And the chaotic adventure continued!

The author write so beautifully, I felt I was in the Austrian Alps and in fairyland. This is a light academia, and I love all the footnotes. I also enjoyed seeing Emily and Bambleby take the next step in their relationship. The pace is just perfect for me, not too much and not too little.

If you like an atmospheric fantasy series with mean fairies, this is for you!

Can't wait to read the third installment and see where Emily will take us.

This book comes out January 16

James' rating: 5 out of 5 wild stars of love! ✨

This one was wild! I loved it!! It moved faster than the first book and had a quick flow feel to it.

Wendell just made me fall in love with him more which I didn't think was possible. I found I could relate to him a lot more. Emily was just awesome as ever and the statement love makes fools of us all rings so true here. Also, Poe! I loved that little dude! 😍

We also meet new characters, some of who are quite the enigma. I feel like Emily had a lot of growth personally and her relationship with Wendell makes her a better person. There was consistent growth with the plot as well as new insight about the world as well as the characters.

It was a chaotic and wild ride. Emily's love for Wendell influenced a lot of her decisions. I found that Emily is more like the Folk (well a few of them anyway) than she is human and the moments she expressed her love, unconsciously, made me smile. And let's not forget, there is no greater strength than love.

While the first book primarily concentrated on fantasy with a little bit of romance, this book balanced more than the romantic aspect of it while not compromising on the fantasy. We had an epic ending and it was a whirlwind of fantasy, romance, mystery, some humor and of course, love. What more do you need?

Thank you Netgalley, Little Brown Group, UK and Heather Fawcett for a wild ARC!

Thank you to the publishers for the e-arc! 4.5stars! This was an amazing read. The fantasy and the banter. Diving into this world, truly made me want to live within the pages of this book. Did not disappoint, was everything I hoped it would. I want more. This is a book for all and it had all the right elements wrapped up into a brilliantly written story! I really want to get a physical copy. Have my eye set on the hardback how gorgeous is it.

This was a FANTASTIC read! I loved the first book exploring the world of faeries and after the ending i knew i had to read this ASAP. It took on more adventure than book one which i liked but it still kept that cosy spring read feeling. The lyrical prose kept me so enchanted!

The artwork for the cover is BEAUTIFUL and while i say never judge a book by its cover, this one you can judge and still enjoy!
