Firstly, I read this book right after finishing 'Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries', which might have affected my review.

'Encyclopaedia of Faeries' is amazing, unique and cosy, introducing the Folk and how their world(s) mingle with ours, as well as an interesting cast of characters in the format of a research journal.

'Map of the Otherlands' shares this format and also largely the same structure as its predecessor, which made it feel a little redundant and slow-paced, weighed down by description. I didn't feel as connected to the characters in this book as I did the previous one, and it didn't feel as whimsical. I also missed Wendell, who wasn't around as much.

This is still a nice, cosy book set in an intriguing world, and I'm grateful I received this ARC

I think this is one of those rare occasions when I liked the second book in the series than the first one. I enjoyed Encyclopaedia of Faeries when I've read it, but to me at times it felt a bit lacking and it was hard to get into it, however I didn't encounter such issues with Map of the Otherlands. Starting this book felt like holding a warm cup of tea in my hands with fuzzy socks covering my feet, because I've got to meet familiar characters, which I loved in the first novel - Emily, Wendell and even some more minor, but very memorable characters (it's such a treat, but I'd rather not spoil). This time, instead of doing research for her encyclopaedia, Emily goes on a new adventure - she takes on a new project and decides to create a map of a faerie realm. This might seem like a simple enough task, but it soon proves to be completely opposite, when unexpected guests start turning up in Cambridge and dangers follows them all the way to Austria. This time, we also encounter a few new faces: Emily's niece Ariadne and her employer Rose, who join Emily and Wendell on their adventures. This group soon proves to be quite entertaining due to their differing opinions on practically every subject and little quirks that each one of them has. As always, Wendell is quite charming, although he is less present in this book than he was in Encyclopaedia, nevertheless his charisma is definitely still there. Emily seems to be more comfortable in her skin and still determined to achieve her goals despite the possible harm, which only proves that she's not a damsel in distress. I think that Ariadne and Rose were great additions as well and I hope that they will continue to appear in the Emily-verse. I quite liked the plot and pacing (which I wasn't fond of in the first book), it worked really well for me. This was honestly everything I wanted - cosy fantasy with a sprinkle of romance and a lot of intriguing adventures - so in my opinion this a perfect winter read, which keeps you on your toes, but at the same time feels like a warm hug. I can't wait to read more of Emily's and Wendell's adventures in the future!

Thank you to Little Brown Book Group UK and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinions! As per publisher's request, my full review will be posted on Goodreads on the 4th of January, 2024.

♾️/5 !! this book was utter perfection. I adore Emily and Wendell so much and it was so great to see them again. The book had similar vibes to book 1 but I loved the new characters and dynamic.

I spent 90% of the time giggling and kicking my feet. I could honestly read a 500 page book of just Emily and Wendell bickering.

Overall this book was a fantastic sequel and I’m so excited for book 3 (I’m going to be devastated to say goodbye).

I need to come back and read after reading the first one, I didn’t realise this was a sequel 🙈

I’ve started book 1 and loving it so far!

I fell madly in love with the first book and I’m happy and glad that I also loved the second book in the series! This book is a continuation of Emily and Wendell’s adventures in a different setting with interesting new characters and an introduction to different magical creatures in the same whimsical, cozy, and magical style of writing that the author provides. Let’s also not forget about the romance! I was so engrossed in the story and devoured it in only a couple of days. I definitely would recommend this series if you also love cozy romantasy vibes.

Thank you to NetGalley and Little Brown Book Group UK for this digital ARC. I am eternally grateful!

I loved this! I found the first book slow to start but this one grabbed me from the beginning. Excellent adventures.

Thank you so much to Little Brown Book group and Netgalley for the eARC of this book, which I was incredibly happy to receive! I really enjoyed reading the second instalment of the Emily Wilde series, which had the usual elements of cosyness, quirkiness, lovable characters, adventure and sweet sweet Emily/Wendell bickering. The plot of this book felt more entertaining and thrilling, possibly because I was already attached to the characters, and had more of an historical fantasy vibe than the first. I would definitely recommend picking up this second instalment if you have liked the first, and picking up this series if you think you'd be into a cosy fairy academia book! And now you'll find me counting down the days until Emily Wilde's third instalment!!!

I will post this review at the account linked below on Jan 5th 2024.

Thank you very much to Netgalley and Little, Brown Book Group UK & Orbit for the e-ARC!

I was looking forward to read Book two of the Emily Wilde series (I was so excited when I found out that there was going to be a sequel!). I adored book 1 so much because it was a cosy, low-stakes fantasy book that helped me take a break from epic battles and spicy fantasy books that I was previously reading, which was a very good decision made.

I found myself giggling frequently over Emily and Wendell's interactions and endless banter! They are two remarkable characters with their own individual quirks and qualities that are just adorable. Their relationship is beautiful (I'm always up for old-school romance!) and it did not feel like it was overstepping on the fantasy genre. It's a perfect balance, if I may say.

Charming new secondary characters were introduced as well as familiar ones. The ribbons also elevated the magical element of the story! The illustration of the places felt very vivid, I could almost feel like stepping into this faerie world myself.

I am so excited for this book to be out in the world VERY SOON! I plan to re-read it and I will definitely read the next books on this series moving forward. I'll give it 4.5/5 stars, rounded up to 5.

Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands is out everywhere on January 16, 2024.

***My full review will be posted on Goodreads on or after January 2, 2024 as requested by the publisher.

Thank you netgalley and the publisher for giving me a copy of the book in exchange of an honest review.

Since it is a sequel i will try and not get into details about the plot. Being honest, i went into it with really high expectations. I enjoyed it, its a fun story but it felt lacking compared to the previous one.
Emily is invested in a new project - creating a map of the realms of faerie and ends up travelling to the Austrian Alps hoping to find Bambleby's realm. Besides that, they have to survive assasination attemts, helping a few scholars and maybe finding new friends?

While it is still a cozy fantasy i didnt feel as captivated by the setting as the first one, and it felt like it stopped being a journal, an investigation anf went into full adventurous mode. The author presents more characters such as rose and ariadne, The first one a scholar who wants to keep an eye on thngs and ariadne, emily's niece, who is full of curiosity and wants to learn more about the fairies. While i did appreaciate the new characters i found them lacking, they were just filler characters.
Regarding the relation between emily and wendell, it left me wanting for more and not ina good way. It felt like the relation didn't really develop, there was nothing, nada. I admit there were some nice moments but nothing compared to the frist book.

I still enjoyed the book and really want to see what comes next.

A wonderfully cosy fantasy adventure, told primarily in diary form, this has a wonderful historical element that reminds me of Brian Froud’s Lady Cottingham books. I would love to see a fully illustrated colour edition.
There’s a grumpy/sunshine old fashioned romance, and some brilliant character relationships. As well some more discoveries about how the realms of faerie work, and entwine with our realm. Absolutely magical.
Already I’m looking forward to the next instalment.

(Spoiler free review)

After reading the first book, I was already in love with the characters Emily and Wendell. Somehow, this sequel is even better! The story picks up where book one left off, yet it's unique so it brings a lot more new elements to the first book instead. It reads like a cozy fantasy or a cozy mystery even, but still has adventure and a faint hint of romance. I couldn't put the book down from start till finish. This book gave us more insights in the world that Emily is living in and Faerie. I also love how we can see Emily and Wendell slowly change and grow over time and become more aware. I can't wait for book 3!

Reading this feels like you're sitting in a cozy cottage with a warm mug of tea, highly recommend!

I really love this faerie world!
I really liked the relation between Emily and Wendell!
There was just something about the plot that was not pulling me in as much as the first book did. It might have been that I was reading this book in short parts, so I couldn't get fully invested.
But I did really like the end, and am very curious to where the third book will take us!

Definitely recommend this book for a 'lighter' fantasy book/series, or if you want a more atmospheric read!

I adored the first Emily Wilde book and so was delighted to see this pop up on Netgalley - and it says something for how keen I was to read this that although I absolutely could not get it to download onto my kindle (and reader, I tried) I ended up downloading the Netgalley app and squinting at the tiny pdf on my tiny phone screen instead. With hindsight, maybe I should have waited and bought it and enjoyed it at full print size but I was just too impatient. So, not the optimum reading experience but worth it because this is a great sequel with the same inventiveness and wit that made the first book such a stand out.

After Wendell is poisoned on his birthday by his evil ursurping stepmother, Emily and Wendell head to Austria in search of a mythical door that would allow them to sneak into his kingdom unseen. This time they are accompanied not just by the faithful Shadow but by Emily's very keen student niece Ariadne and her head of Department, Dr Rose, who has concerns abourt Emily's relationship with Wendell and her methodology (not neccessarily in that order). Emily has also brought along a faun's foot to guide them in their search, obviously. But the Folk in the small Alpine village where they are based are more bloodthirsty than any she has encountered before and with Wendell increasingly weakened, Emily finds herself in trouble even she isn't sure she can get out of.

Funny, clever, twisty with wonderful characterisation, this is a fabulous sequel. Highly recommended.

Emily Wilde is a genius scholar of faerie folklore, and has catalogued many secrets of the Hidden Folk in her Encyclopaedia of Faeries with the assistance of her infuriatingly charming fellow scholar, Wendell Bambley. But this man is more that just a brilliant and unbearably handsome scholar, he’s an exiled faerie king hiding from his murderous mother, all the while he’s dodging assassins and trying to find a door back to his realm.

By lucky happenstance, Emily’s new project, a Map of the Otherworlds, the realms of faerie, will take them on an adventure to the picturesque alps. Perhaps there they will find the door they need to return to his realm, and find the key to saving him from his family’s dark plans. But with new friendships and relationships for the intrepid professor to navigate and dangerous Hidden Folk lurking in every forest and hollow, perhaps they may not succeed.

Emily will endeavour to do everything within her power to unravel the mysterious workings of the faerie doors, and her own heart, in this epic novel. A beautiful fantasy novel that glitters with snow and magic on every page that will enchant you with every word. A charming academic fairytale, complete with footnotes and a continuing romance that will leave you hoping for happily ever after. This book was so vivid and enchanting, with incredible world building that I found myself spellbound!

If you loved the first book in the series, I'm sure you will love this one too. I struggled with the first one, and I struggled with this one as well. The writing was my biggest issue, it's very dry and just not very exciting and it's hard to keep yourself motivated to continue. The pacing was faster than in book 1 and it was more focused on romance rather than academics, which was a development I didn't really like but that I understand. I liked the journal format and I liked the fairies as well as the worldbuilding, where I would have enjoyed a stronger focus. I'm not really the biggest fan of the romance so all those scenes didn't really do anything for me. The plot was pretty straight forward but not the most exciting and everything combined just made it sort of hard to get through this although it wasn't especially long.

Thank you to Netgalley for sending me this arc! 4.5 stars

I loved this more than the first book! After reading Encyclopedia of Faeries, I was prepared for the journal style of writing, so it made it a lot easier to get into the story!

The storyline progresses quickly, and I love seeing Emily slowly admit her feelings for Wendell, as well as watching her relationships with Ariadne and Professor Rose grow. I had a feeling Professor Rose would turn into more of a friend than a colleague, and it was nice to see him respect Emily and care for her wellbeing.

Wendell is clearly head over heels for Emily, and it is one of my favourite things to see her from his perspective. I loved his diary entries and how he calls her "my dear dragon." I can't wait for Emily to fully admit to herself/her journal how she feels.

I was thrilled at the Poes appearance. He is my favourite brownie, and I was so happy to have him be a part of this book! The character development of Snowbell was great too. I loved how mischievous he is!

I had no idea this was going to be a trilogy, so I was shocked at the end (and now sad because I have to wait for the third one to be released)!

Thank you to Netgalley for lefting me read this ARC! I loved returning and reading about Emily and Wendell again. This time around the book was faster on the uptake and pulled me in immideatly. The growth and adventures they have are amazing and meeting new friends along the way. Absolutely enjoyed it to the fullest! And can't wait for the return to our lovely friends. The details and descriptions are amazing and now contains even more interesting things.

I loved this book even more than the first one, the light academic whimsical writing continued with new people and places. I love the relationship between Emily and Wendell, such a fun one. Wendell I think is my favourite because of his slightly nonsensical logic haha. Ariadne was a nice character addition and I liked her growth with Emily. I'm excited to see where the story takes us next!

I received this ARC from Netgalley

✨Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands review✨

Overall rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

First of all I would like to give a MASSIVE thank you to @hachetteuk and @heather_fawcett for sending me a pre-release copy as this was one of my most anticipated reads for next year

Honestly this did not disappoint, it was just as cosy and lovely as the first book and I just loved everything about it.

I adore Wendell and Emily, I love the diary layout, I love the writing it just makes me so happy to have such a sweet, cosy fantasy about faeries.

Overall if you haven’t, please read this series it’s so comforting.

From the minute I started to read this book I was giggling at Emily and Wendells relationship.

The light academia books are becoming my favourite thing ever. The book 2 in the series continues in the style of Emily writing her diary. I just love this writing style as it helps your brain to get excited for a book again.

In this book Emily and Wendell are on another quest and that is to find the Nexus and to find the door to Wendell's kingdom and help him to take back his throne. A few new characters were a fantastic addition to the book and their journey with high stakes. I love how neurospicy Emily is and to read this through her eyes is so entertaining. It is so much fun to read what she found interesting enough to write about and what not (which makes it hard to read the book sometimes) but that is adding so much to the experience!

I loved it and I can't wait for book number 3
