Thank you NetGalley for the ARC! love a good thriller and this was one. I want to read more of this series and from this author. You won’t have to read the first one to read this one, because I didn’t, but I definitely want to learn more about Nikki. This was a page turner and a must read!
‘Silent Girl’ by ML Rose is the second Nikki Gill novel, and they are best read in order. This tale is told over dual timelines, and I welcomed the murderer's tragic backstory, which really does set the scene for what follows. Being set in Oxford we have an ideal backdrop for political shenanigans, the sometimes, dark world of the Oxford educational system in addition to the hectic private lives of Nikki and her team. The plot runs at a steady pace and there are a few red herrings to keep the reader guessing, and I felt the ending was a fitting climax. However, I do feel that the book needs to be polished, there are several inconsistencies and errors, that would benefit from a thorough edit.
The first time I have read this Author. I enjoyed the style of writing. A solid four star read. Great premise. Good characters. Page turner. Plenty of suspense to keep me guessing Would definitely read the next novel. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance toI
A good well rounded read which propels us both into the fascinating and historic world of Oxford University and also into the far murkier underworlds. Some difficult yet sensitively portrayed themes such as drug addiction, social care and illegal immigrants and a delve into the world of Politcs, which can be equally dark and evocative. The action is fast and the various characters and suspects well described and keep us guessing to the end. The lead detective is likeable and has a complex background of her own, as seems to be a literary preference, but his work well. Some good food for thought and excellent entertainment, I am very happy to recommend this book.
This is the first of thos series I had read bit I quickly picked up the back story.
A good detective storyline and I thought I'd maybe worked out the ending but no I definitely hadn't!
I loved this read from start to finish.
So gripping as you are pulled into the characters once again.
Detective Nikki Gill knows her job.
Book two in the series to be enjoyed and eagerly await more.
Fantastic, Mind blowing, with a little bit of banter that I like.
And with a superb ending, I am awarding five big stars.
Another great book by M.L. Rose. This was a gripping thriller that hooked me from the start. While I did figure things out about midway through, the plot had some nice twists and turns that had be second guessing myself many times. Highly recommend for those who love aa good thriller, this one will not disappoint.
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you for allowing me to review this book. The second in the series about Detective Inspector Nikki Gill. It was a very good crime story. Better than the first,
Stolen Souls. Completely addictive, with many unexpected twists. I was hooked from the start and enjoyed how each of the main police team characters developed.
I'm looking forward to reading more about Nikki and Monty and their team.
Silent Girl by ML Rose is the second Nikki Gill novel. After the wonderful Stolen Souls I wondered if the second novel would hit the same heights. I really liked the character of Nikki and the struggles she had with both her work and private life. It was a breath of fresh air to read at the time. The setting of Oxford immediately makes me think of Morse, but you're soon in the world of Nikki Gill.
Nikki is called to the murder scene. A young girl is found laid out, murdered. No identification, but it turns out to be the daughter of a prominent local councillor who aspires to be the next MP for Whitney. (yep, David Camerons old seat). The action cuts with flashbacks to twenty years before.
I loved the way the action switches across the decades. Trying to work out who the voice from the past adds another layer to the suspense. There's loads of it in here. Political skullduggery, the murky world of the Oxford college system. All along Nikki must confront her own past. Her work relationships come under scrutiny. She has to find why a member of her team is giving her so much grief.
The ending when it comes is well thought out. A fitting climax to a complex story. This is a real page turner as you furiously try to come up with whom the killer is before the author reveals all. The pace and style of writing suited me. An easy and thoughtful plot is exposed slowly.
There's a bit in the first half of the novel where I thought it could have been left out. It was when one suspect tries to flee to France by smuggling on a wagon. He meets a group of asylum seekers eking out a meagre existence on the cliffs living in tents hidden by rocks. I'm glad ML Rose left this in. It added a poignant touch and showed the plight of those who are trying for a better life. A stellar moment.
Nikki Gill is one of my favourite protagonists in crime fiction. She has a quiet demeanour about her which matches the pace and style of book well. It's not a heavy noir novel, yet it nots a light cozy novel. A refreshing series that keeps me coming back for more.
A solid second book in the series. Can't wait for the next from ML Rose.
3.5 stars
Detective Nikki Gill investigates the murder of wild child heiress Charlotte "Lottie' Winspear who is found dead after the annual balls held by the not-so-secret Oxford drinking societies. Lottie was heavily involved in left-wing politics, much to the embarassment of her Tory counsellor father, Jacob.
Action seamlessly moves between Nikki and her team investigating the case, flashbacks to the unknown perpetrator, and Jacob's political machinations. Lots of twists and turns guessing who is who and while I did guess fairly early on who the perpertrator was, it was still a fun ride watching Nikki figure it all out.
While I haven't read the first book, it was easy enough to pick up on Nikki's backstory, especially her family background. There's also a side plot involving a growing attracting between Nikki and her former work nemesis Monty, as well as between her two detective constables. I don't mind these sub-plots, but two in the team seem a bit much, and I find this one is more of a tell than show between Nikki and Monty.
With its descriptions of Oxford and surroundings, as well as the well-paced plotting and action, I found this a thoroughly enjoyable read. The writing is engaging, the action moves at the pace you'd want in a crime novel. If you like reading Angela Marsons, this is the sort of series to get your teeth stuck into. I will definately be back for more of Nikki and her team.
Thanks to Storm and NetGalley for the ARC.
Thank you NetGalley and Storm Publishing for my approval to read and review this book.
Detective Inspector Nikki Gill has now been in Oxford several months and she is finding her feet within the team. Nikki is called out to a body of young woman found in the woods. Who is she? How did she end up here? Where did she die? What is her story? The story is full of plot twists and turns with a few red herrings thrown up along the way leading you to believe you know who the killer is. However, things don't go smoothly for Nikki and I found out I was completely wrong with my guess. It is well written with strong descriptions of characters and locations. The ending came as a surprise to me. I will be recommending this book.
Great book. Just when you think you have it all figured out, you find out you were so wrong. Loved it!
What an amazing read. Its definitely a well written thriller/ mystery/ police procedural.... but it's also so much more. The characters have depth and dimension. I loved the storyline about the Oxford students and the world of the elite in itsself! Usually in these stories, someone is murdered but they're almost irrelevant so I loved that this really explores that side to it aswell. The main character is original and makes intelligent choices without being too predictable and the twists and turns kept me guessing throughout. I dont think I've read this series before but will definitely be looking out for it now
Great police procedural with a relatable main character in Nikki Gill- a little maverick, extremely determined and very intuitive.
The murder itself is almost secondary to the ongoing lives of the Oxford students and the political elite and the details tied the reader in knots first with what possible motive there can be and then with the sheer number of suspects seemingly on the run!
A great read!
Thanks to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for offering me this ARC in exchange my honest review.
This book is a gripping and mysterious thriller that takes me on a wild ride. The plot is filled with twists and turns that keep me on the edge of my seats. M.L. Rose does an excellent job of building the suspense and keeps the me guessing until the very end. The characters are well-developed and the pacing is just right, with a perfect balance of action and lulls to build the tension that keeps the me hooked and wanting to know more. Conclusively, it is a must-read for fans of mystery and thriller genres. It is a page-turner that will keep you engrossed until the very end. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a crime and suspenseful read.
A woman is found murdered after a party in strange circumstances.
This was one of the books that makes me wonder if I would have enjoyed it more if I had read the first one.
As a murder mystery, it is pretty solid and it had enough parts that were not obvious to keep me interested.
I love police procedural type books and this did not disappoint. I feel that there was enough suspense and action to keep you interested. I found that I felt that the author gave us enough misdirection to keep us on our toes, and described well what it is like to interact with people in a specific social circle.
I enjoyed the story and look forward to the next installment in the series.
I thank NetGalley and the publisher for my ARC.
A Great Police Thriller
This is another enjoyable book by ML Rose and is a good crime thriller. The book has plenty of twists and turns with plenty of suspense and a gripping read. This is the second book in the Detective Nicki Gill series and her team must find the killer of the daughter of a businessperson. The book is fast paced with plenty of characters, and it is not obvious who the perpetrator is. A great police thriller with a bit of everything. Thanks to NetGalley and to the publishers of this book for giving me a free advance copy of the book to preview and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Book 2 in the Detective Nikki Gill series starts with a bang but the characterisation is a bit lacking in any depth. I did like the plotting and the Oxford setting, which was beautifully described but the dialogue had a few errors and just felt a bit heavy. Overall, just an ok read. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
Detective Nikki Gill is called to the scene of the murder of a young woman. The route to solving the murder takes many turns along the way. I wasn’t sure who the culprit was, there were quite a few twists to the story. This was a good mystery that kept me guessing. The book is part of a series but it could be read as a stand alone. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.
Such a clever read with a harrowing back story. There is a tragic back story behind the murder. I found myself not guessing what would happen in the twists and turns. I didn’t realise this was the second so I might go back and read the first one
