I first read this book when I was a child and it has always stuck with me; I was just as enthralled re-reading it now, nearly 30 years later, as I was back then.
The Dark Portal is the first book in The Deptford Mice trilogy - a thrilling fantasy series. The mice who live in The Skirtings of a derelict house have long been told to stay away from the mysterious grille in the basement but it seems to lure them there with a dark magic, but, one day, Albert Brown finds himself deep within the sewers where the evil rats lurk and uncovers a dark secret that will change the lives of the mice in the skirtings forever.
This is a fantastic adventure story for readers aged 9+, but some children might find it a little scary and there are themes of loss to be aware of.
I requested a review copy of this book some time ago, and I'm very glad I got the chance to read it.
This charming book is the first in the Deptford Mice series, and I really enjoyed reading about their adventures. The cute, loveable characters were vividly brought to life, and the illustrations were adorable. There was something about the storytelling that reminded me of classic children's authors like Lewis Carroll, C. S. Lewis, and Frances Hodgson Burnett. I'm sure that my younger self would have been delighted by this, and I think there is something about a children's story that is timeless. The magic carries itself through to adulthood, and such books are often comfort reading for me. After reading this, I'd place it in the same category.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for a free copy to review.
It's the first book I read by this author and I'm happy of this discovery as I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and the world building.
Will surely read the rest of the series
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Have you ever read a Robin Jarvis novel? I grew up reading his other series - ‘The Witches of Whitby’ and ‘Tales from the Wyrd Museum’ - both stunning series for children - but never before picked up this one.
First released in 1989, this is a brand new re-issue for 2024, The Dark Portal is a brilliant introduction to a dystopian series, perfect for readers 9+ years..
It’s is really dark in places , in the best possible way, therefore it won’t suit everyone but this means that it’s great for adults too. The writer does his own illustrations, which add to the eeriness of his stories - they are reminiscent of The Dark Crystal.
The re-issue also includes over sixty brand new illustrations. It’s gripping, slightly gruesome in places and sure to become a classic all over again.
