I'm a huge fan of Nicci French so I was very keen to read their new one and I'm so happy to say that I loved it! This novel follows the Salter family, mostly the daughter Etty, in two timelines - the first in the past when Charlotte goes missing on the night of her husband's birthday party and also thirty years later when a podcast is being made to investigate what happened back then. I loved both timelines and the exploration of what happened to Charlotte. I was completely along for the ride with this novel, I had my ideas about whodunnit and why but I was wrong with all of it and I loved that it kept my guessing until the reveal happened. There were so many suspects and so lots of red herrings but it all felt believable within the world of this novel. This was a book I read in just two sittings and I very mush enjoyed it! I highly recommend this one!
At first “Has Anyone Seen Charlotte Salter?” appears to be quite a standard thriller (not that there is anything wrong with that): background is explained, characters and relationships are explored and a shocking event is described. All done very well, of course, but nothing particularly remarkable. However, about a third of the way into the book we jump forward thirty years to the present day and we see how the passing of time has (very believably) affected the individuals involved, and a new narrative in the form of a podcast relating to the past events is introduced. This isn’t necessarily a new idea but it is not common and is well handled, turning this into a much more contemporary-feeling novel.
This is essentially, a classic crime novel with a modern twist. But it is a genuine page-turner, carefully plotted with various clues scattered throughout and with all strands of the story fitting nicely together to reach a satisfying conclusion.
Nicci French's "Has Anyone Seen Charlotte Salter" taps into the popularity of podcasting, specifically true crime podcasting, in this family drama about a mother who goes inexplicably missing and the fallout her family suffers.
The novel taps into a lot of popular aspects/genres - mystery, family drama, secrets, true-crime podcasting - to create a twisty narrative where anybody could have the key. I really enjoyed the story, and did not guess where we were going to ultimately end up.
On the night of her husband’s 50th birthday Charlotte Salter disappers. Did she choose to leave a joyless marriage or has someone deliberately harmed her?
Even her four children don’t understand why she stayed with their hateful father in a bad marriage, but is he also the reason that she never came home?
When close family friend, Duncan Ackerley is found dead Police ineptitude sees the case closed as a murder suicide.
30 years later Duncan’s sons are home to record a podcast and the Salter family reunite to clear out their family home. In doing so they have stumbled back into the eye of the storm and when another murder occurs the whole story unravels.
Told with the whip smart synergy of the authors, this is both an exploration of what it means to be a family and police procedural. The writing flows so effortlessly that one page became 10 then 100, would highly recommend.
Another great read by this author
And another book that I didn’t want to put down
Different to her other books but enjoyed it just as much
Thanks NetGalley
I really enjoyed this crime drama. I have read most of Nicci French’s novels and was another winner for me. I became absorbed from the beginning and found it difficult to put down as just wanted to find out what was happening. What had happened to Charlotte Salter? Was she still alive? This was a tense thrilling read for me with very credible characters. I love the style of writing of this author.. I just want to keep on reading and it’s always just one more chapter!
Highly recommend this book.
Thank you Simon and Schuster for the ARC and Netgalley.
I'm a huge lover of Nicci French books, and this didn't disappoint.
Great storyline and characters and I love Maud hopefully she can come back.
However, for me the book was a little drawn out - hence the 4 stars rather than 5
This novel is a remarkable exploration of a wide variety of complex themes such as grief, depression, infidelity, obsession, mental health issues, suicide, and dementia. The author has done an excellent job of exploring these themes nuanced and sensitively, creating a rich, multi-layered, thought-provoking, and emotionally resonant narrative.
The story is a captivating family saga and mystery thriller that spans 30 years, taking the reader through the characters' lives and struggles. It tells a poignant story about the impact of a woman's disappearance on her family and the people around her, exploring how this event affects their lives in both the short and long term.
The author skilfully combines two timelines in the novel. The author skilfully combines two timelines throughout the story to create an exciting and emotionally resonant narrative.
The author explores the complex relationships between the characters and how they are affected by the woman's disappearance, making the story feel like a moving family drama. The author has done an excellent job of portraying the depth of emotion and the complexity of human relationships, creating a rich and engaging story that will stay with readers long after they have finished reading.
Slow burn mystery that builds to a twisted conclusion that makes it worth sticking with!
If I’m honest, this one took me a while to get into, but once events began to unfold after the initial build up, I was suitably engaged! One to stick with for sure 😊
Thanks so much to @simonschusteruk @likely_suspects for my #gifted copy.

Has Anyone Seen Charlotte Salter? was an intriguing read. It was quite a slow burner to begin with but once it got going I think I enjoyed it.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for my ARC.
what really happened to Charlotte Salter?
This book will help you figure it out! Huge fan and could not stop reading once i started
My first Nicci French book and pleased to say I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Has Anyone Seen Charlotte Salter? Is set in a small town impacted by the death of a man and the disappearance of a woman. The book follows their families and the police as they try to solve the crime/s.
HASCS is gripping and twisty, it gave me everything I look for in a thriller. I would love to read more books about the policewoman, Maud (such a gutsy and compelling character!!).
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
A mystery. I find it interesting that I did not like any of the characters but did find the mystery surrounding what had happened to Charlotte Salter fascinating. The denouement was not telegraphed in anyway and yet once the mystery was solved I felt I should have realised earlier what had happened. The clues are there!
This is exactly the kind of mystery I find myself drawn into - a missing person, who disappeared years ago, seemingly into thin air, with a family trying to come to terms with it over the subsequent years. Add into that a podcast and a great new Detective, both investigating, and you have a winner!
Writing duo Nicci French have written some brilliant novels, and Has Anyone Seen Charlotte Salter? is no exception. I really enjoyed the twisty, mysterious plot, the setting (a small village in the 90s and then back to that setting 30 years later), and the great characters including the introduction of Maude who is a strong, likeable female lead who I would happily read more about - so I'm glad this is the start of a new series!
The end is satisfying, with a surprising solution and plenty of suspense, and the characters develop well over the novel. I'd highly recommend Has Anyone Seen Charlotte Salter? and look forward to future releases in this series!
My thanks to NetGalley and Simon and Schuster publishing for a copy of “ Has Anyone Seen Charlotte Salter ? “ for an honest review .
This is my first book by the husband and wife team Nicci French and , although for me ,at times it lacked pace
I enjoyed reading it. The character of Maud really stood out for me and I’m not sure if this will be the start of a series of books ?
I’ll definitely try reading more by The authors
Another intriguing story from Nicci French. Full of intrigue and mystery from the start with a hint of suspense having over the whole book.
I just loved this book, the storyline and the characters and couldn’t wait to get back to it. Two brothers decide to do a podcast about two unsolved crimes from 30 years ago, the death of their father and a local lady, who went missing. This causes another crime to be committed, which is presumably connected.
It’s a while since I read anything by these authors and it’s made me realise I need to seek out any I haven’t read as yet.
Well, it's only the second Nicci French book that I have read and I was prompted to read this after seeing "Nicci French" at Bay Tales in Whitley Bay.
I was not disappointed and will now have to read all of their books!
Who is Charlotte Salter? A normal wife and mother, liked by all, who fails to turn up to her husband Alec's 50th birthday party, that of course she was responsible for organising, along with her four children, Etty, Niall, Ollie and Paul. Where has she gone? She wouldn't just vanish! The police take the route of least resistance and decide the outcome without investigating fully. A man's body is found drowned in a nearby river and is linked to her disappearance! Case solved??
Years later, the son's of the man who drowned return to do a podcast about Charlotte's disappearance; old secrets come out. A DI from outside the area is brought in to solve the case of a woman who has died in a house fire. But is everything linked?
A cracking read!
Nicci French books never disappoint and this one is no exception.
Charlotte Salter is meant to be at her husbands 50th birthday party but she never arrives and is never seen again, leaving her four children desperately wondering where their mum has gone. Over a quarter of a century later, the case is reopened and maybe the family will finally discover just where Charlotte Salter went.
A fantastically written detective novel that weaves lots of strands together before bringing them all together. The Nicci French writing partnership goes from strength to strength.
I am a fan of Nicci French so was really looking forward to reading this book. Unfortunately I found it quite slow and tedious. The premise of the story was good, a woman (Charlotte/Lottie) goes missing on her husband’s 50th Birthday. A few days later, a man she is allegedly having an affair with (Duncan Ackerley) turns up dead in a local river. The investigation by the police doesn’t seem to go anywhere and the person in charge presumes it was Duncan killing Lottie and then overcome with remorse commits suicide, case closed
30 years later the children of Duncan, Greg and Morgan, start a podcast asking questions again about the disappearance of Lottie. By this time Lottie’s husband Alec has dementia and his children have returned home to prepare him for moving into a nursing home. The podcast gathers steam and listeners and the local police open the case up again when a further person dies in suspicious circumstances.
I confess to finding this a little dull until the last 30% and almost gave upon it but was persuaded by some reviews to keep going. The last 30% or so was interesting but not wow but everything was tied up. Without giving any spoilers I cannot comment on a few things that really annoyed me which were glaring mistakes from the beginning and also the red herrings, to lead us to think a different conclusion, were very predictable.
All in all, not the best book I’ve ever read
